Will The Curt Weight Distribution 17502 Work On Trailer With 950LBS Tongue Weight & Clear Tailgate?

Question:

I am considering the purchase of the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch , 10K GTW, # 17052. Our equipment trailer has a gross weight of 9,500 lbs fully loaded and the measured tongue weight at the ball is 950 lb. Our goal is to transfer weight back onto the front axle of our tow vehicle, a 2022 F-150 with a GTW rating of 10,500 lbs. As your site mentions, this should improve, steering, braking, and stability, and will remove some load from the rear axle, which is the limiting factor on the trucks tow rating. Sway has not been a concern, and the pickup has built-in electronic trailer sway control. I have two questions regarding this WD Hitch. First: the Curt WD Hitch weighs approximately 84 lbs. When considering the tongue weight rating of the hitch, should the hitchs weight be added to the 950 lb tongue weight of the trailer? If so, the gross tongue weight would become 1034 lbs, which is slightly above the 1000 lb tongue weight rating of the hitch. The second question: the Curt WD Hitch has a 2inch shank with a adjustable head. What is the effective ball mount length? Or, what is the minimum overall length from the shanks receiver pin hole to the center of the ball hole on the head? I realize that the number of washers for the tilt in the adjustable head will make this length vary slightly. My goal is to determine if the tail gate of our F-150 will clear the a-frame jack when lowered. I believe that a ball mount length of 12-1/2inch to 13inch would be adequate. Thank you.

When using the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 or another weight distribution hitch you do not have to include the weight of the hitch in the tongue weight calculation for the trailer. So this hitch is rated for a trailer with 800-1,000lbs of tongue weight and total weight up to 10,000lbs. It is important to ensure the weight of the hitch and tongue weight of the trailer do not exceed the capabilities of the receiver or your 2022 Ford F-150. Your truck and receiver will have different weight ratings for using a weight distribution hitch and without.

The Curt # C17052 is going to be approximately 11" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball. To gain the clearance needed to lower your tailgate you can use the Extended Shank # EQ90-02-4600 which is 6" longer than the standard shank. This will give you the clearance needed to lower your tailgate when connected to your trailer.

You will need a 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # A-6 as the hitch above does not include a hitch ball. This ball has a 1-1/4" shank to fit the mounting hole.
