Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

It’s beautiful!!! Much nicer than expected and even better in person. Not only is it nice but super functional with safety in mind. My favorite part is that the ramp is so close to the ground so there isnt a huge step up into the trailer like most.

This is a great product! My truck almost rides smoother with my trailer hooked up then without the trailer. Installation was a piece of cake. 20 minutes after installing I saw first hand what can happen when you don't have a weight distribution hitch. As I was driving down the road pulling my travel trailer I noticed up ahead of me that there was a truck was pulling a heavy trailer coming towards me down a hill. The trailer began to sway and the truck could not handle it. The truck crossed into my lane and then back across the road going into a ditch and rolling over! Thankfully the people in the truck were okay, but the guy said he had is trailer loaded down too much and he didn't have a weight distribution hitch! As I was standing there calling 911 I looked over at my truck, and the whole setup from my trucks front bumper to the rear bumper of my 31 foot travel trailer was perfectly level. Safety first everyone! This is a great product!!

by:

Received the weight distribution hitch promptly when they said. Hooked up to the motor-home well & carried our truck & RZR smoothly! We are very happy with the overall service we received. Very professional, attentive to details, good follow-up, and excellent product! Would order something from E-trailer again, because the service was so good! Thank you!

by:

Great price, seems more robust than other brands. Works great, no problems. I use it to tow new travel trailers from Indiana to all over the US. Helps with "porpoising" on some trailers.

by:

Excellent SystemI have been very happy with this weight distribution system. It has performed perfectly and is built heavy duty for hauling. It is much stronger and built better than most of the systems that I looked at. A+

by:

Gotta love "Curt" products! ......great engineering, priced fair (etrailer.com).......

by:

Ok system, had to buy a longer shank for my set-up. Work fine but that's about it. After about 4k miles trying different adjustments decided to replace with a different system.
FYI, I am near the top of the TW with this.

Just what I needed.

Great Very easy to mount and use

Packaging this to survive the ups trip is a non winning battle. Arrived fine but the shear weight and shape of the items in the box and outer box is no match for the ups torture test

by:

Easy to use and works great

Put this on a 1997 GMC C1500 with original springs, pulling a heavy 18 ft tandem flatbed. It takes all the squat out of the rig when hauling a heavy or slightly nose heavy load. Fairly easy to put on first time and anytime, just had to extend my safety chains.

I've been using WD hitches for almost 20 years. The Curt WD hitch is solid, sturdy, and simple to set up. I prefer the trunnion style and use a sway brake, also. This setup has never failed, regardless of the abuse it's subjected to.

by:

Fast shipping, great hitch, easy to install, remember to be patient when adjusting the first time. I shoulda measured for trunnion bar length before ordering. I needed the 28" not the standard 30". I've ordered from etrailer twice, and am very happy with their service. Will definitely order more in the future.

by:

I have had my equalizing hitch for about a year now, and I have been very satisfied with this product.

My hitch arrived as scheduled and in good condition. it was fairly easy to install (though I admittedly had help from my father-in-law!), and it is simple to hook up to my camper and truck.

Prior to owning this hitch, my camper/truck would sag where they connected, and would cause extra stress on my brakes, causing the discs to overheat. My rig now sits much more evenly, and I have noticed a big difference in the amount of heat that is generated by my brakes.

I am very happy with this purchase!

by:

This stabilizer hitch solved my problems towing a 31ft travel trailer. It is a well built product and etrailer provided excellent service when I purchased it.

by:

The product was received in good order and went together with the instructions. the product was put on a 2009 Yukon Denali and a 2017 24' Sportsman Travel Trailer. There are some questions about the tightening instructions of some bolts which I will call about.

by:

Relatively basic installation with correct LARGE torq wrenches for the ball . It doesn’t take long in a nice flat parking lot. I hooked this up to tow a travel trailer on a cross country move 3500miles or so with a good share of dirt roads, Made the ride smoother and safer

by:

Works great, just need to get it setup right and your good to go. Worked great to equalize the weight so I could pull this trail safely down the road

by:

I don't have anything to compare it to - bought this before we even towed for the first time, but it seems to be doing what it's supposed to do! No problems with installation or usage to report. Very pleased.

by:

Although it took five days for my order to arrive, even though I paid an extra 14.95 for two day shipping, two of the five days were weekend days. My order was intact and in perfect condition. High quality and priced right. Very satisfied with etrailer. I will buy from them again.

  • Troubeshooting Uneven Tension on Curt Weight Distribution System # 17302
I spoke with my contact at Curt and he said a couple of things could cause the uneven tension on your Curt weight distribution system # 17302. First make sure you are on even ground when you set up your system and not on an incline or that your trailer is crooked. Next, make sure you have the same number of links in on both sides of the system, with a minimum of five links. You can test the tension in the system by taking the chains off your system an d lifting the bars until you feel...

  • Can Weight Distribution be Used on Vehicle with Air Suspension
When using a weight distribution system on a vehicle with air ride or air suspension you want to inflate the air system first and then adjust/set up the weight distribution system. The other thing you need to do is make sure that your weight distribution system is rated for the tongue weight of your trailer. If the system is rated too low it won't be effective and if it's too high the ride quality will be very rough. I attached a help article on weight distribution and tongue weight for...

  • Adjusting Curt Trunnion Weight Distribution System so Tow Vehicle Rides Level
Although you have the proper system based on the tongue weight of the trailer, it sounds like you need to apply more tension to the spring bars. This will apply more leverage to the system, and therefore more weight to the front axle of your tow vehicle, leveling the ride height. How many links are showing in the chain between the snap up bracket and the end of the spring bar? If there are more than 5, tightening the chain a link or two will provide some more tension. I confirmed with my contact at Curt that the spring bars of the Curt Trunnion Weight Distribution System part # 17302 is 30-5/8 inches. You are also correct about the Curt Short-Arm Systems as they have 28-5/8 inch length spring bars. I attached an FAQ article on weight distribution systems for you to check out also.

  • How to Adjust Weight Distribution System for Level Towing
Don't worry, I can help explain how you will need to adjust your weight distribution system for the best tension. First thing to know is that there is no particular set amount of bar tension that is standard for all vehicles. It will depend on the vehicle and the trailer and how its loaded. Ultimately you will want to check your Tacoma's wheel wells for the best fitment. When you have the proper amount of tension for your setup your front and rear wheel well will measure the same height...

The horses in this case, or cargo in other cases, does not have to be on or in the trailer to install and set up the CURT Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System, # 17302. Whether there is weight in the trailer or not, you want 5 links of chain for the spring bars to hang from. You may need more or less links to get the spring bars parallel with the trailer frame. We do have a solution for you, but you should not turn your Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System # 17302 upside down (unless you were referring to the shank, which you can flip). This system comes with a shank that gives a maximum rise of 7-1/2" and maximum drop of 1/2" so what you'll need is simply a new shank that will get you level. If the V-nose of your trailer covers the top of the trailer frame at that location, no worries. You can simply use a bolt on chain hanger, like part # C17005. The dual cam system is different than friction sway control because the dual cam system works to stop trailer sway before it starts.
