Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Fantastic communication and shipping time! Product is great!

by:

These are my 2nd set of tires for this trailer. The EXACT same perfect tires as the 1st time & the EXACT same perfect customer service as 7 years ago. Never had a flat & they still hold air, but I am being proactive by getting new 1's before tragedy strikes. Yep, I haul really heavy material regularly & they still lasted 7 years which is amazing! Very HAPPY!! Thank You

Sammy

A year already? No tire changing can make for a mighty speedy summer. I will look to these for my next round of tires. Round... Tires... Get It?

by:

These tires are great! More importantly, the customer service I received from eTrailer was outstanding! I did quite a bit of research to find the best price on the tire size I needed for my trailer. eTrailer had the best price, the purchasing process was quick and easy and the tires shipped quickly. I would buy from eTrailer again in a heartbeat!

by:

The two Kenda Loadmaster mounted tires I ordered were a perfect fit for my vintage Coleman Colonial pop-up camper. I discovered my old tires were in poor condition when having the bearings repacked. I had a camping trip coming for which I had already paid a non-refundable camp site fee for specific dates. I was unable to find these wheels on short notice locally. etrailer came to my rescue and my new wheels were on my porch within 3 days. They were fully inflated and the rims looked great in their white powder coat not to mention the great tread. These new rims and tires will give me great peace of mind as I pull my camper from Cincinnati to Oshkosh through busy Chicago traffic. The fast service and quality product was much appreciated!

by:

I experienced great support when purchasing these wheels and they fit my trailer perfectly. Thanks!

  • 18.5x8.5-8 Equivalent Tire with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
I recommend going with the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel item # AM3H290. The wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and the tires are a load range C. Maximum load capacity is 940 lbs at 50 psi and a maximum speed of 81 mph. This tire has a 1-year worry-free guarantee. If within the first 12 months the tire is damaged in any way, it will be replaced at no charge. This is the same size of tire you currently have it's just using different numbers. I have attached a trailer...

  • How to Find Replacement Tires and Wheels for a Teardrop Trailer with 4.80-12 Tires
I believe we have exactly what you need for your trailer, but to be absolutely certain, we will want to look at a few more factors. Thank you for providing the tire size, we have many tire and wheel combos with a 4.80-12 tire. Each of these combos have a maximum speed on 65 miles per hour, which is the limit on most trailer tires and wheels. The next part that we will want to look at is the bolt pattern. Your trailer likely has a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inches. You can verify this by measuring...

  • Can 20.5x8.5-10 Trailer Tires be Used in Place of 18.5x8.5-8 Tires on Snowmobile Trailer
A 20.5x8.5-10 is going to be about 2 inches taller than the 18.5 tires you have now. If there is enough space above the existing tires to go to the taller size then you can use them. I have included some links on tires for you as well.

  • Which 4.80 X 8 Size Tires Can Be Used On A Minuteman Trailer To Maximize Tire Tread Life
The 4.80x8 tire size has a overall diameter of 16.1 inches and a section width of 4.6 inches. I would not recommend going to the 5.70x8 size or the 215/60-8 size, because you would be increasing the overall diameter to 18.1 inches, which is 2 inches taller. When you go to a taller tire you are making the trailer taller and that will increase the chance of more sway, as well as possibly causing clearance issues. I would recommend going with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with...

  • Is There a 215/60-8 Load Range D Bias Trailer Tire & White Wheel With 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
There is an option for a 215/60-8 load range D bias trailer tire and 8" white wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern, but they come separate so you'd need to get the tire mounted to the wheel. The correct parts for this are the following: - Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 - Load Range D # AM1HP28 - Steel Trailer Wheel - 8" x 7" Rim - 4 on 4 - White # AM20021 Then for the valve stem you will need the Americana High Pressure Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20904. • Going from 5.70-8 Trailer Tires on a Pop-Up Camper to 215/60-8
With a wider tire you may have a little more side to side stability on your pop-up camper. You should note that the 5.70-8 and the 215/60-8 both have very similar tire heights, but the second size is much wider and you will need to consider the clearance on your trailer to determine if you would have the clearance. This size tire is 8.9 inches wide. You would need to go with a wider rim for the new size as well. For that you would want the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White...

Harbor Freight trailers have a bolt pattern of 4x101.6 (or 4 on 4 inch) or the 5 on 4-1/2 inch if you have 5 lugs. . The 225 x 8 isn't a size we carry, but we do have the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H290 which have a zero offset. This will give you 4.45 inches of backspacing since the tires are 8.9 inches wide. The same is true of the 5 lug wheel and tire # AM3H310.

  • Can a 215/60-8 Size Tire Replace a 5.70-8 Tire for a Pop Up Camper Trailer
The main difference between a 5.70-8 trailer tire and a 215/60-8 will be the width. Your current tire is about 5.9 inches wide and the 215/60-8 is about 8.9 inches wide. They will both be about the same height. If your current wheel setup has more than 1-1/2 inches of clearance from the inner sidewall of the tire to the frame of your trailer you would have clearance for the # AM3H290 to fit.

  • Trailer Rim Availability that is 8 inches in Diameter, 7 inches in Width and has 4 Bolt Pattern
For a trailer wheel that is 8 inches in diameter that has 7 inches of width and a bolt pattern of 4 on 4 inch we have the part # AM20021. As long as your current wheels have a zero offset like this wheel it would clear your frame the same way. To help equalize the load that a trailer wheel carries manufacturers almost always give trailer wheels a zero offset of one very near it. For a version of this with a tire on it that is sized 215/60-8 you would want the part # AM3H290.

  • Installing Larger Tires on Boat Trailer with 4.80-8 Tires
You can use larger 4-on-4 wheels/tires on your boat trailer as long as you keep about 2-1/2-inches clearance above the tires to allow for normal suspension travel. Your 4.80-8 tires are 16-inches in diameter and the nearest larger size on a 4-on-4 wheel is 215/60-8 part # AM3H290 which is 18.3-inches in diameter. This tire will reduce you fender clearance by about an inch. If you refer to the linked article on tire sizes you'll be able to see the various sizes and their load ratings and...

  • What is the Backspacing of the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel Part # AM3H290
If you are referring to the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H290 then the backspacing will be 4". This however is not a constant amongst all 8" diameter x 7" wide trailer wheels as the offset will affect backspacing if present. A positive offset will move the wheel closer to the trailer whereas a negative offset will move the wheel further away from the trailer. I have attached a review video for you as well.

  • What is the Offset for 8" Trailer Wheels with 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern
It all kind of depends on what exact tire/wheel combo you're looking at, but generally speaking trailer wheels have a zero offset so the middle of the tire is basically directly over where you mount it to the hub. If you can tell me what exact combos you're looking at I can answer your question a little more directly. The 2 combos I saw that match your descriptions are # AM3H290 and # AM3H200 which both have a zero offset.

If the above is correct the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 inch White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C, item # AM3H200, would be the correct tire and wheel replacement, as long as the .1 inch extra width will not interfere with the trailer framing or fenders. • Availability of Narrower Tires for Snowmobile Trailer for Better Handling
I'd recommend going with a 12 inch wheel with a ST145/R12 tire on it, like the # AM35354. The ST145/R12 has a diameter only 1 inch larger than your existing tires, so it'll only raise your trailer height by 1/2 an inch. I've linked you to our selection in that tire size/wheel configuration. You'll want to choose a wheel with the desired finish with the properly rated tires. You'll want tires you choose to have a combined capacity that exceeds the weight of the trailer and its contents.

  • Wheel Offset of 8 and 10 Inch Trailer Wheels For Correct Backspacing
The 10 inch wheels and 8 inch wheels have a zero offset. This means the center of the wheel will be centered on the hub. The 10 inch hubs are 6 inches wide and will have a 3 inch backspace to the outside edge of the wheel rim. The 8 inch wheels have a width of either 3-3/4 inches, 5-3/8 inches, or 7 inches. This will give you a backspacing of 1-7/8 inches, 2-11/16 inches, or 3.5 inches. Remember the tire width is wider than the rim, so for your clearance you will also need to account...

  • What is the Next Trailer Tire Size Up from 18.5 x 8.5-8
Technically the next size up from an 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 is a 6.90/6.00-9 but it is not common so I would not recommend going to that size. The next common size up would be a 205/65-10 such as # AM1HP52. It would be slightly more narrow but almost 2 inches taller than the 18.5 that you have now. So there would have to be enough clearance above the existing tires to use the larger size and still have room for the travel of the suspension. Going up a wheel size will require different wheels....
