Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A year already? No tire changing can make for a mighty speedy summer. I will look to these for my next round of tires. Round... Tires... Get It?

by:

These tires are great! More importantly, the customer service I received from eTrailer was outstanding! I did quite a bit of research to find the best price on the tire size I needed for my trailer. eTrailer had the best price, the purchasing process was quick and easy and the tires shipped quickly. I would buy from eTrailer again in a heartbeat!

by:

These are my 2nd set of tires for this trailer. The EXACT same perfect tires as the 1st time & the EXACT same perfect customer service as 7 years ago. Never had a flat & they still hold air, but I am being proactive by getting new 1's before tragedy strikes. Yep, I haul really heavy material regularly & they still lasted 7 years which is amazing! Very HAPPY!! Thank You

Great. Cant wait to get back to work in spring...

by:

The two Kenda Loadmaster mounted tires I ordered were a perfect fit for my vintage Coleman Colonial pop-up camper. I discovered my old tires were in poor condition when having the bearings repacked. I had a camping trip coming for which I had already paid a non-refundable camp site fee for specific dates. I was unable to find these wheels on short notice locally. etrailer came to my rescue and my new wheels were on my porch within 3 days. They were fully inflated and the rims looked great in their white powder coat not to mention the great tread. These new rims and tires will give me great peace of mind as I pull my camper from Cincinnati to Oshkosh through busy Chicago traffic. The fast service and quality product was much appreciated!

by:

I experienced great support when purchasing these wheels and they fit my trailer perfectly. Thanks!

  • Is There a 215/60-8 Load Range D Bias Trailer Tire & White Wheel With 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
There is an option for a 215/60-8 load range D bias trailer tire and 8" white wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern, but they come separate so you'd need to get the tire mounted to the wheel. The correct parts for this are the following: - Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 215/60-8 - Load Range D # AM1HP28 - Steel Trailer Wheel - 8" x 7" Rim - 4 on 4 - White # AM20021 Then for the valve stem you will need the Americana High Pressure Rubber Snap-In Valve Stem # AM20904. • Replacement Tire and Wheel for a Leland Trailer with 16.5X6.5-8 Tires and 4 on 4 Inch Bolt Pattern
It sounds like you have 4 on 4 bolt pattern wheel and tire combination that is 16-1/2 inches overall diameter, 6.5 inches overall wide and mounts on an 8 inch rim. If the above is correct the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 inch White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C, item # AM3H200, would be the correct tire and wheel replacement, as long as the .1 inch extra width will not interfere with the trailer framing or fenders. • Wheel and Tire Combo that Fit Timbren Axle Less 2k Kit With 4 Bolt Pattern
Since the part # AM3H490 is a wheel and tire I think you meant the part # A12RS440 which is not compatible with the wheel and tire combos you mentioned due to the wheel bolt pattern. The Timbren has a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern which would require # AM3H290 for a white wheel or part # AM3H300 for galvanized. The wheels you mentioned have a 5 bolt pattern.

  • Availability of 215/60-8 Tire Mounted on Rim w/ 4 on 4 Wheel Bolt Pattern
The wheel and tire you mention are available as separate parts, part # AM1HP28 for a 215/60-8 tire in load range D, and an 8 by 7 inch rim with a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern, part # AM20021. Our vendor doesn't offer the wheel and tire as a combo, but it would be a simple matter to have the tire mounted on a wheel at your local tire shop.

  • Comparing Tire Sizes For Replacement Trailer Tires Currently Using Size 5.7-8 on Motorcycle Trailer
Your current 5.7-8 tires are 5.7 inches wide and 18 inches in diameter. Moving to 145/80r12 tires would give you the same width, but a larger diameter of 21.1 inches. If you want to stay with your current size tires I've linked the page to all your options. This will give you a height difference of 3 inches and that reduces your wheel well or fender clearance by 1.5 inches. You need to account for suspension travel, but if you have enough clearance you can swap out your wheels and tires. For...

  • What is the Next Trailer Tire Size Up from 18.5 x 8.5-8
Technically the next size up from an 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 is a 6.90/6.00-9 but it is not common so I would not recommend going to that size. The next common size up would be a 205/65-10 such as # AM1HP52. It would be slightly more narrow but almost 2 inches taller than the 18.5 that you have now. So there would have to be enough clearance above the existing tires to use the larger size and still have room for the travel of the suspension. Going up a wheel size will require different wheels....

  • Which 4.80 X 8 Size Tires Can Be Used On A Minuteman Trailer To Maximize Tire Tread Life
The 4.80x8 tire size has a overall diameter of 16.1 inches and a section width of 4.6 inches. I would not recommend going to the 5.70x8 size or the 215/60-8 size, because you would be increasing the overall diameter to 18.1 inches, which is 2 inches taller. When you go to a taller tire you are making the trailer taller and that will increase the chance of more sway, as well as possibly causing clearance issues. I would recommend going with the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with...

  • Should Trailer Tire Pressure Match Tire Sidewall Or Trailer Sticker?
The max tire pressure on the tire is what you should follow. The sticker on your trailer was for the tires that came on your trailer. The replacements if inflated improperly would not operate correctly and would wear unevenly or fail if not inflated correctly. You always want to run your trailer tires with the max psi when inflated cold (before your trip begins) for proper function and load capacity.

  • Wheel Offset of 8 and 10 Inch Trailer Wheels For Correct Backspacing
The 10 inch wheels and 8 inch wheels have a zero offset. This means the center of the wheel will be centered on the hub. The 10 inch hubs are 6 inches wide and will have a 3 inch backspace to the outside edge of the wheel rim. The 8 inch wheels have a width of either 3-3/4 inches, 5-3/8 inches, or 7 inches. This will give you a backspacing of 1-7/8 inches, 2-11/16 inches, or 3.5 inches. Remember the tire width is wider than the rim, so for your clearance you will also need to account...

  • Installing Larger Tires on Boat Trailer with 4.80-8 Tires
You can use larger 4-on-4 wheels/tires on your boat trailer as long as you keep about 2-1/2-inches clearance above the tires to allow for normal suspension travel. Your 4.80-8 tires are 16-inches in diameter and the nearest larger size on a 4-on-4 wheel is 215/60-8 part # AM3H290 which is 18.3-inches in diameter. This tire will reduce you fender clearance by about an inch. If you refer to the linked article on tire sizes you'll be able to see the various sizes and their load ratings and...

You've actually found the right part with the # AM3H290, as those will be the best replacement for your 18.5 x 8.5 x 8.5 N78 tires on 4 on 4 wheels. These have been used as replacements for a similar Apache Mesa trailer, as you've seen, and I think they're going to be the best solution. These tires have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, are rated for up to 65mph and have a capacity of 940-lbs per tire. I've linked a review video of this combo tire/wheel for you to have a look at, as well.

Hello Greg, I am afraid that we do not offer a tire that will fit a 4 lug wheel and is also 10" wide or more. Or even a 215/60-8 tire that is 8.9" wide, but only 18.3" in diameter like part # AM3H290. From there, any wider tire would need to be on a 5 lug or 6 lug wheel. Therefore, as long as you have an addition 1.8" of height and 2" of width to fit the new tires and wheels on your trailer then they will work well for you.
