Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Great tire. Fast shipping. E-trailer has never let me down.

Excellent radial trailer tire. Purchased set of six wheel/tire combo from etrailer 2015. Used this Karrier as replacement tires in June 2022. Very happy with this, and all, purchases from etrailer.

Speedy service and great transaction

by:

Only just put tires on, so can't yet report on them. They look/feel well made. etrailer made good on their 110% price guarantee when I proved a lower price elsewhere. When it appeared there was going to be a delay in shipping they called and offered an alternative tire which I chose to decline and waited for these. They arrived earlier than anticipated however. Easy transaction, hope the tires are as good as other reviews. A word of warning; the shop took 8 hours yesterday to do a laser alignment on my Correct Track equipped 5th wheel and to mount these 4 tires. Adding insult to injury, they billed a half hour apiece to mount them, or $270! I almost blew a gasket after they had told me that it would only be a couple of hours and that I'd be fine waiting. The sign on the wall for $29 (each) mounting was if you bought their tires (very fine print). Needless to say I didn't let them get away with that. I at least give them credit for honoring the $29 sign on the wall after arguing it. Next time I'll be getting them mounted elsewhere....

  • Would Load Range E Kenda Tire ST235/80R16 Be Adequate for 13k Trailer
If you are under the weight capacity and speed rating of the tire plus are running the max air pressure listed on the tire you would be just fine. If you have a # AM10248 on your trailer wheels which has a 3,500 lb capacity per tire you would have a 1,000 lbs of extra capacity when you add up all the tires. So in that regard you would be fine. But this tire does require you to run 90 psi to ensure that you get the full weight capacity.

  • Replacement Tires ST235/80R16 For A 34 Fifth Wheel Camper
For your 5th wheel camper, I recommend the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10248. This tire will fit 16" x 6", 16" x 6-1/2", 16" x 7", and 16" x 7-1/2" rims, and has a maximum speed rating of 81 mph. This tire was created specifically for trailers and has been computer generated for a superiors tread design and is comprised from premium-rubber compound materials.

  • Can an ST235/80/16 Load Range F Trailer Tire be Safely Used on a 15k 5th Wheel Trailer
There seems to be a mix up somewhere. Trailer tire # AM10501 that you have referenced is size 235/85-16, not 235/80. We have 2 tires in size 235/85-16. First, # AM10501, is a load range F and is rated for 3,960 pounds at 95 psi. Then we have # AM10295, load range E, rated for 3,640 pounds at 95 psi. So the load range F tire is rated higher. For tire size 235/80-16 we have 1 tire, # AM10248, rated for 3,197 pounds at 90 psi. As far as if any of the above tires can be used on a 14,800 pound...

  • Size Difference Between ST235/80R16 and ST235/85R16 Tires
Yes, there is a size difference between the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 like part # AM10248 and a Goodyear Endurance ST235/85R16 like part # 724860519. The diameter of the ST235/80R16 is 30.9" and the section width is 9.4". The Goodyear Endurance ST235/85R16 has a diameter of 31.73" and a section width of 9.25". The ST235/85R16 is a couple inches larger then the ST235/80R16. They both fit 16" wheels. You can use the larger tire if you have the clearance to do so. We recommend at least 3-4...

  • Trailer Tire Blow Outs on a 2007 Carriage Cameo 5th Wheel Trailer
What probably occurred was excessive heat build up like you have said. Trailer tires are made with a thicker side wall. This thicker side wall is made to handle more vertical load associated with trailers. If a tire is under inflated, this will allow for excessive heat to build up and the tire will not be able to cool down like normal. This is when you get blowouts. The solution is easy. Make sure that you inflate the tires to the maximum psi rating as indicated on the tire. For the Karrier...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire for LT245/75R16 Size Tires
I'd be happy to make a replacement recommendation for your 245/75R16 tires! I recommend going with the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 # AM10248 if you're just looking for the tire. If you need a tire and wheel combo then I recommend the Taskmaster Provider # TA39VR which has the 6 lug wheel, or the Taskmaster Provider # TA99VR which has an 8 lug wheel. These tires will have the same basic dimensions as your current tire size and they have a Load Range E weight rating which is 3,520 lbs at...

  • Recommended PSI for Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Load Range E Trailer Tire
Most trailer tires, including the Kenda Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10248 that you referenced, should actually always be inflated to their listed maximum psi regardless of the trailer's load. The maximum load of 3,500 pounds for this Kenda Karrier Tire is dependent on it being inflated to the max 90 psi. Inflating it to below this number will essentially reduce the tire's capacity to an unknown number which can easily lead to you overloading the tire with the trailer's...

  • Will Americana Wheels Work With Michelin Light Truck Radial Tires On 2014 Airstream Trailer
In order to determine if your trailer wheels have an offset, remove a wheel from your trailer and measure from the mounting surface of the wheel (where the wheel mounts to the hub) to the inside and outside beads. The difference between these two measurements is the offset. Because some trailer wheel offsets can be as small as 5 mm, they can be difficult to measure. If you can't measure the wheel, you can contact your trailer manufacturer with your trailer's serial number. The Aluminum...

  • How to Determine Correct PSI for ST235/80R16 Trailer Tires for TPMS System
The answer to this is going to depend entirely on the tires you have because you always want to inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi because it will allow the tire to handle the full capacity it is rated for, and give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear slower and more evenly. For example, the Karrier ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10248 should be inflated to 90 psi, while the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL401 has...

  • How to Choose Special Trailer Tires for 5-Horse Featherlite Tandem Gooseneck Horse Trailer
Since I do not know your tire size or the trailer's GVWR (its gross vehicle weight rating) it is tough to give you a specific tire recommendation but I can help you with the things to think about as you choose new tires. The two tire articles I linked will be helpful too. First is weight. You want to find the trailer's GVWR on its main sticker. This is the very most the loaded trailer can weigh. Take this figure and divide by the number of tires on the trailer, which is almost surely going...

  • What is the Best Tire Pressure to Use in a Trailer Tire
I would strongly recommend you put in the maximum tire pressure listed on your trailer tires. Any more or less will cause ride and tire wear issues, as well as cause heat build up and lower your tire pressure. Check out the tire and wheel FAQs I attached for you.

  • Can ST235/85R16 And ST235/80R16 Tires be Used on Trailer at Same Time
Thank you for the kind words, that is much appreciated, and while I do wish I could tell you it was okay, in regards to having different size tires on your trailer - ST235/85R16 and ST235/80R16 - it is definitely not recommended. There are a number of different issues that can occur. You'll get uneven tire wear with the tires having different rotations, your trailer could track oddly, and there could be suspension issues occurring because of the 1 inch diameter size difference. • Selection of Special Trailer Tires for 5th Wheel Trailer to Avoid Blowouts
Most critical to trailer tire performance and durability are 1) proper inflation 2) observance of the tire's rated load capacity and 3) observance of the tire's speed rating. If either of these factors is off the mark then the tire will tend to overheat and heat is what usually causes tire failure. It sounds like you have a good handle on proper inflation and speed. It is perfectly fine to use a tire that is over-rated for the application, say using a load range F tire when an E-rated...

  • Recommended Tire for a Cyclone Toy Hauler 3 Axle 18,000 Pounds
According to my research, your Cyclone toy hauler came equipped with ST235/80-16 tires (30.9 inch overall diameter) load range E. I recommend the Kenda Karrier radial tire # AM10248 because it's a radial tire and a load range E. It has a load capacity of 3,197 pounds at 90 psi. A radial tire will flex more and as a result providing better ground contact, traction, stability and tread wear. In addition, it runs cooler than a bias ply tire allowing it to last longer. Keep in mind that...

In order to determine if you have space for a larger wheel/tire you need to measure the distance from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender and then from the inside of the tire to the outside of the frame. We recommend at least 3" on top and 1" inside so if the new larger size allows for this then you'll be good to go. • Replacing Underrated Tires on a 42 Foot Montana 5th Wheel Trailer
Fifth wheel trailer manufacturers assume that some of the weight of the trailer is carried by the tow vehicle. So it often seems like the tires on them are underrated for the gross trailer weight. And that is true. However they also assume that the trailer is going to be towed perfectly level which isn't always true. So if you were towing the trailer nose high for example there would be more weight on the trailer axles and that could overload the tires. It would not hurt to go to 235/85-16...

There is not a specific percentage of extra capacity that needs to be taken into consideration. You can certainly use a tire with a larger weight capacity to have some breathing room.
