Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Shipping was lightning fast. Only issue was one of the tires was compressed and not flat in the box. Made it a little difficult to install on rim. But besides that, awesome experience. Tires were replacing 20yr old tires on pontoon trailer

by:

Super service. Fast delivery of trailer tires and rim. E trailer carried size and product item I had difficulty finding elsewhere.

by:

Received the order today and I must say the ordering, shipping and customer service is outstanding. Now about the product. The galvanized finish on both wheels leaves a lot to be desired. The single tire appears to be slightly deformed but I think that is just from packaging. One of the rims also has a slight bend near the tire bead. The dot code shows that all three tires are at least a year old. I will mount the tires on my trailer next weekend and attempt to have the single tire mounted on my spare wheel. I will give a rating after I see how they work. I'm not trying to be picky but I expected a little better considering they are new.

by:

These tires are exactly what I needed. I appreciate the way Etrailer kept me informed, every step of the way, on my order. I just had them mounted and installed them on my pontoon trailer today. Winter in MN so it's going into storage till spring! All looks good and will let you know how it all works out in the spring. Great service and fast delivery!

by:

Better price than my local shops and fast free shipping.

Tires arrived quickly, in a heavy duty box and in good condition. took them to a local tire shop and they were quickly mounted on my existing rims, and in no time at all i had new tires on my motorcycle trailer. had previously ordered tires for my camper, am a satisfied customer.

by:

I bought these tires for the main reason that they're not made in China. Chinese tires don't last.

by:

Order went smooth and product came on time. Thank you for your good service.
For your account records I made the order in my Wife's name and you sent it to Daniel. My name is Will. Assume my son Daniel must have ordered from you in the past and you picked up his name from your records. Our son, Daniel, died four years ago and we miss him very very much. Please update your records. Thank you.

by:

tires came swiftly wrapped securely. preordering video was superb. best price on tire with better load capacity and highway speed rating that i found anywhere. i was most appreciative.

Have not utiilized them yet just put them into use this week . They will be stronger and perform better than the smaller tires with lower high way rating speed

by:

Super easy order process, customer service very knowledgeable and friendly, great pricing, super fast delivery, great order experience, would definitely order again

by:

best 12 inch tire and price I have ever seen.

great tires

by:

As ordered and pretty fast! But it did take me 1/2 and hour to bend the tires back into shape! lol...maybe a box that is 2" wider?

by:

These were the exact fit, style, and brand that I was looking for to replace the dry rotted tires on my 2 place Sea-doo Triton trailer. Shipped the same day I placed the order!

by:

Good tires. Valves stems where to big for the holes in the rims

by:

Very good service, fast delivery,Not the first time I bought Thur you and will be buying again THANKS

by:

Really nice tires! They were tougher to mount than the B load rating I was replacing, but I am happy with them. I have been a customer of etrailer in the past and they have been great to work with.

by:

Appear to be good value for 8 ply tire

by:

I think you guys are great. Product description was key to my decision to purchase this item.

by:

Good product and quick shipment. I would buy tires through etrailer again.

by:

Excellent support and excellent people. I Wasn't sure what tire I needed and they helped me pick the best one and explained everything about the tires.

by:

I am very pleased with the product I received from etrailer. I received a courtesy call from Kelly at etrailer to inform me that the tires I ordered would be about a week late because the item was "out of stock". True to her word the tires shipped on or before her committed date. They arrived and I've already got them mounted waiting to leave for Colorado. Thanks so much.
I will definitely be ordering future items from etrailer.

Patrick I am just now getting to use them up here in Colorado. I pulled frm Texas up here with no problems. I am very pleased. As we speak I am in Ridgeway, Co with the camper. Thanks for the follow up. There are few vendors that follow up on their products after a year. Hats off to you and your company. Etrailer has always served me well. God bless you and Im praying you have a wonderful day.

by:

First they were back-ordered for many months. Winter now in Pa. so boat is in storage & tires won't be installed for months. Concerned about their condition - they are very mis-shapen and crushed somehow. Maybe packaging from manufacturer. They are NOT nice round tires that will go right onto a wheel. We'll see if the tire installer has any issues with that seating the beads and inflating the tires. Looks potentially like an issue to me. They are the correct size.

The wheels should take shape fine after they are seated on a wheel.

by:

The tires have just been installed on our 'SnowBear' trailer, as a result I do not know how they will hold up over time. The 8 ply Kendas (load range D) are replacing Carlisle (load range C). They appear well made, the price was excellent, the shipment arrived very quickly and the customer service was outstanding.

is st145r12 wider than a 5-30-12

Patrick B.

9/25/2013

An ST145/XX-R12 measure about 5.71 inches wide. As the name implies, a 5.30-12 is 5.3 inches wide. The difference in width is less than half an inch, but there is a difference you should be aware of.

by:

The tires were delivered a day of the projected delivery date. That was great. I also ordered a bearing kit which was delivered as well. Unfortunately for me I only ordered one bearing kit, I have two wheels, duh. I will be putting the tires on in the spring, too cold now but I am ready. Great service from a great company. Thanks!!!!

Stephen B.

1/18/2017

I had the tires mounted last year before any camping was done. My first trip was about 250 miles each way and they held up well. The second trip was about 400 miles each way and they still did well. I was pleased with my purchase. Even the date of manufacture on the tire was only a couple of months old, so I knew they were fresh tires.

by:

Shipping was quick. Packaging was great. I have only used these tires once so far, so dont know about how they will wear, but the load range D runs a lot cooler than the C that I used to buy for the same trailer.

I use these tires on a trailer gathering firewood. I have hauled heavy loads over rough ground and ran at highway speeds on the road This tire WORKS.

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for 155/80R12
I do recommend the 5.30x12 as it is by far the closest to your current 155/80R12. I put the sizes below for you to compare. 155/80R12 -Width- 6.1" -Height- 21.8" 5.30x12 -Width- 5.5" -Height- 21.9" I would recommend using bias ply for your driving as radial tires are more at home on the highways. For the load rating I would stick with the same rating that the trailer manufacturer recommended. This information can be found on the Data Tag on the front drivers side of the trailer. If...

Trailer tire # AM10068 which is a 5.30-12 load range D will have a higher capacity, 1,250 pounds at 105 psi, than a C load range. And it will have a higher ply rating, 8, which translates into a tougher tire. Please note that the higher capacity tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer. You might actually want to go to an ST145/12 tire, # AM10140. This is a load range E tire that will fit the same wheel size as a 5.30-12. It has a 10 ply rating and is rated for 1,520 pounds...

So the rule of thumb with trailer tires is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. Your current size 4.80-12 tires measure 4.8" wide and 20.5" in diameter, which you'll want to keep in mind. You can go to a larger tire, but it will need to be a 12" tire, with the biggest upgrade being a 5.30-12 tire: - Kenda K353 Bias Trailer Tire - 5.30-12 # AM10066 This tire measures...

  • Correct Tire Pressure for Trailer Tires
On a trailer tire such as the 5.30-12 load range D # AM10068 you always want to inflate the tire to the maximum psi, which on this tire is 105. There are other load ranges in this size which have a different psi; your tire should have the recommmended psi written somewhere on the sidewall. Doing this will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear more slowly and allow for optimum gas mileage.

Most trailer tires are rated for speeds up to 65-mph, despite some roads having posted limits up to 80-mph as you note. Of course, towing a trailer at 80-mph is not recommended. Generally a radial trailer tire will give you better handling than a bias ply. This is because a radial tire has more flex and maintains better ground contact than a bias ply. Radials also tend to run cooler. I suggest you use Load Range E-rated radials since a higher rated tire will run cooler and the radial...
