Trailer Tire Recommendation for 5400-lb Pop-Up Camper Trailer

Question:

I have a pop up camper with a loaded weight of 5400#. Tire size 225/75 D15. My trips include multiple freeways with speeds in excess of 65 mpH posted speed limits up to 80 while I acknowledge towing a camper at that speed may not be the best option. It is also unsafe going 65 with people jockeying around me. Can you make a recommendation of a quality tire to meet my needs for weight and speed?

Most trailer tires are rated for speeds up to 65-mph, despite some roads having posted limits up to 80-mph as you note. Of course, towing a trailer at 80-mph is not recommended.

Generally a radial trailer tire will give you better handling than a bias ply. This is because a radial tire has more flex and maintains better ground contact than a bias ply. Radials also tend to run cooler.

I suggest you use Load Range E-rated radials since a higher rated tire will run cooler and the radial design will give you better handling. We offer Kenda # AM10303 that has a maximum load capacity of 2,830-lbs at 80-psi inflation. Always run a trailer tire at its maximum rated psi pressure as shown on the tire sidewall.
