Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I've had a small utility trailer for 25 plus year that I use around my property for cleaning up brush and fallen tree limbs. Over time the tires have picked up thorn, developed small leaks, and more importantly weather checked and dry rotted.
It would have cost me almost as much to have the old tires removed from the rims, rims sandblasted and painted, and had new tires mounted. Getting these from etrailer was a no-brainer. Quick shipping, and installed within minutes of their arrival. No complaints here.

by:

Tires look great, the wheels have some bubbling in the galvanized finish identical to what other review photos show. Otherwise the price is perfect for a trailer that sits most of the year. Great replacements for the original tires/wheels on my 04 Snowbear utility trailer. I preferred the galvanized look over the white wheels with pin stripes.

I don't normally write reviews but etrailer staff went out of their way to help so I will put in my two cents. Have only had the wheels/tires for a few days but look pretty good for the price. Will say that the welded seams are a little rough, but appear sturdy.

My boat trailer was stored at previous owners yacht club as a dolly since 96 and most everything rusted out. I now realize I should have picked up a hub kit from etrailer with this wheel/tire combo but had already had a local mechanic replace all bearings/races/seals but tire code was 2004 even though they looked great. About to go on a road trip with the boat/trailer and tires were too old so this new set got me on the road economically and the rims are galvanized as trailer will mostly be in the salt. Got new lug nuts for marine application as well as advised by etrailer associate on the phone. I would advise anyone to call etrailer with questions as they definitely know customer service.

Handy "how to measure" etrailer guide worked out great and I did have the 4.5" 5 lug model so it was a perfect fit. Unfortunately, when torqued to the 75-85 lbs recommended in the etrailer torque guide one wheel lug pulled right through although I think it's just that its time had come. etrailer had the part but I needed it quick and picked it up locally and am ready for my trip.

Not my first time visiting etrailer.com, wont be my last. Not sure if I can update this review, but will try if any wear/durability problems with the Kenda tires.

Excellent service fast delivery price was excellent
I also purchased complete axle galvanized hub assembly, and Bud bearings. Extremely happy!

by:

After one year, no concerns at all with these tires and wheels. I don't know how they will hold up over the long term but so far, no complaints.

by:

The wheel bearings on my utility trailer gave out and the local Les Schwab wanted an arm and a leg to replace them. They also noted the tires were at the local tread limit and needed to be replaced. So I went searching for lower cost alternatives.

I found etrailer.com on a google search and was impressed by their selection, low pricing and expert help on their website. I ended up ordering two Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C and two Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - Galvanized from etrailer, and also a set of Reese Towpower 74177 Wheel Bearing Protectors from Amazon. My total cost was LESS THAN the price Les Schwab quoted me for bearing replacements for the two wheels.

They are all on my trailer and and look great. I am really impressed by the quality of parts from etrailer and also their great pricing. Give them a try!

Tires and wheels are holding up well, very satisfied with my purchase. Will buy again from eTrailer and also recommend to my friends.

by:

Bought one as spare 3 months ago. So much better then what trailer has as stock wheels and tires. So I bought another to replace both wheels and use old ones for two spares.

Got some wheel locks too.

Excellent! Service! I needed this ASAP as I’m in the road and it arrived fast as light! Thx Savana and crew !!

Great wheels. Actually just sold trailer and the wheels and tires did it.

by:

Exactly what I wanted. All good after one complete season on and off-road, in and out of lakes and rivers (not exposed to salt water though).

They work fantastic Very happy

by:

Nice looking tire and wheel, looks to be put together with care

by:

Very fast delivery
Secure shipping packaging

Have not had time to
Open packaging or evaluate boat trailer wheels yet.
Everyone at etrailer has been great to work with and to address my needs.
I manage and maintain over several boat trailers so I need to hsbe a reliable source of parts and products.
So far etrailer.com has met my needs promptly and efficiently!!

by: 04/21/2024

Love the tire and Galvanized look. However, I had to have them balance because of the globs of Galvanized material left on the wheels. QC should have caught that.

by:

Great service just like the last time. Will keep using your company for all my trailer needs thanks

by:

I buy regularly from etrailer.com to support my business.
Etrailer.com has performed in an excellent manner over the 4 years i a have used them.

by:

It's nice to have galvanized wheels...especially on a snowmobile trailer...when most trips are on salt treated roads.

by:

Excellent service; product is exactly what I needed. Etrailer is the go to place for trailer needs.

Great. I have always been happy with the etrailer tirewheels. They look and work well. No complaints. Thank you!

by:

Awesome wheel and tire combo, year later look like new buy again in a minute. Happy camper

by:

Price was good and shipping was fast, but the finish on these rims (even for the price) is lacking, in my opinion. I didnt' expect a chrome-like finish from galvanized but these things are not something to be proud of. Every one of the 4 I purchased has what appear to be rust spots under the galvanization. Two of them have spots where the galvanization does not seem to have adhered properly. While maybe they will hold up OK for a while, the main reason I purchased new tires AND wheels was because my existing wheels were looking aged. These don't look much better.

by:

Order came in on time and well packaged. My trailer is a 2004 and the new tires and rims made it look much better

by:

No nuts for spare tire carrier! And rim is all rusted and bubble up

While you are right that it does not come with extra hardware, it should not have been rusted. I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this.

by:

Worked out perfectly. Inflated to recommend psi and drove the trailer fully loaded for a 1600 mile trip

by:

Looks great and they make it easy to order way I need.

  • Replacement Options For An ST155/80R13 Boat Trailer Tire
A 5.30 x 12 tire would be too small to fit your 13" wheels so you would have to either replace the wheels as well or size up to a 175/80R13 tire and check to ensure that there's enough clearance between the tire and the frame and fenders of the trailer. For a 5.30 x 12 tire and wheel you can use part # AM30850 if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern or part # AM30790 if you have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. The options in this size are all bias ply. An ST175/80R13 tire is going to have a section...

You can mount this to the front of the trailer with the CE Smith Spare Tire Carrier for Trailers # CE22007Z-11050-2. There the tire will not interfere with the folding ability of the Apogee trailer.

  • Can Trailer Tire Size 4.80-12 be Replaced with 5.30-12
Yes, you can as the size is very similar and it's a very common tire size change. So if you had a 5 lug wheel currently you could use the part # AM30850 or for a 4 bolt wheel you'd want the part # AM30790 which also has a galvanized wheel and same tire. Or you could reuse your current wheels and mount the part # AM10066 to it.

  • Best 12 Inch Galvanized Tires and Rims for Small Boat Trailer
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Radial tires generally run cooler than bias tires, which usually leads to a longer life for radials. I would recommend going with a radial tire if possible, but provided you heed limits such as load range and psi, a bias tire will also work. We currently offer three different tire sizes that have 12 inch diameters and galvanized 5-lug rims. You can check your current tires to...

  • Product Differences Between Wheel and Tire Package AM30850 and AM30861
The Difference in these two packages is the tires that are on them. The load ratings are different and thus will each respond different when driving. I suggest going with the tire that your trailer is specified to use. # AM30850 Utilizes a Load Range C tire that has a wheel capacity of 1,045lbs. Max inflation pressure is 80psi, which gives this tire more absorption when driving which will equal a smoother ride. # AM30861 Utilizes a Load Range D tire that has a wheel capacity of 1,250lbs....

These tires have the same specs as your existing setup, but the wheels are 12" x 4", so they are slightly more narrow than a 4.25" wide wheel you've mentioned. This shouldn't affect any functionality of use or compatibility issues and we do not have any 12" wheels that are 4.25" wide.
