Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Very fast shipping. The tires are excellent quality and big upgrade from the load range B bias ply I had previously.

Excellent after 1 year. Multiple 2 hour trips down I95 at 64 MPH and many 20 minute trips to the local boat ramp and no issues.

by:

I think they are great tires. I bought 2 sets of cheaper tires and both of the sets leaked out the sidewall. Don’t waist your time looking for cheaper tires, it’s not worth it. Buy from etrailer.

by:

So far so good. Traveled well on the highway as well as some dirt roads. Better than tire purchased at the farm stores. I did have to have mounted on my rims at a minimal cost.

by:

Just what I was after. Shipping was fast and tires arrived in individual boxes that were in perfect shape when they got here. Thanks again for another successful purchase.

The tires are working out for me as expected. Great tires for my boat trailer.

by:

The wheel center cap was missing. Then when I called Wednesday evening they will send me a replacement cap but not before this weekend when I’m taking the trailer out. They wouldn’t overnight the 1 lb centercap! Said I’ll get it next week. Their mistake Terrible customer service!!

by:

I bought 2 wheels and 3 tires to replace some old tires on my double PWC trailer. Put both new wheels on yesterday and mounted the extra on an old wheel for a spare. Mounted this to the trailer using spare tire carrier and everything worked out great. The tires and wheels look great and the spare mounted without any problems to the trailer.

by:

Bought 3 of these to replace the original 2 tires + spare on my 2014 single axle travel trailer. Tires perform very well, no problems.

by:

I bought this tire to replace the spare on my trailer of 18 yrs. Also bought the wheels with the same tires, now my trailer looks like a newer model. THANKS ETRAILER!

by:

Shipping was very fast. Haven’t used the tires yet but the price is right for a good quality tire.

by:

They have been great, much better than the load range c tires that exploded.

by:

Tire is 2 years old, but looks new. I received it 2 days earlier than I thought. Very good service.

by:

Nice tires.I hope they work out well!!

by:

Fast and easy, from ordering to deliver y!

by:

Excellent as always. This particular tire size and Load Range is superior to garbage tires sold at Walmart.

by:

I recieved the trailer tires really fast. They have a good tread design and when mounted look great. I installed them on a very small travel trailer which came out with a load range C. These have a load range D which should be an improvement due to a little more pressure and carring capacity. I am very pleased with the delivery time and looks of the tires.

by:

Great tire, replaced old dry rotted tire perfectly.Trailer rides smoothly.

by:

Fast, speedy delivery of a set of tires. Customer service staff is outstanding with answers to questions within minutes. Thank you all.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for to match the other tire. Hard to find these tires in a "D" load rating and in radial design.
My trailer torsion suspension failed on one side and caused the old tire to rub on the fender. The old tire is not holding air now so I'm just replacing the old tire with a matching unit.

by:

these tires hold up very well and give years of service. If you are mounting them yourself, they're very easy to seal on the rims.

by:

Perfect fit to replace boat trailer tire they don’t make anymore. Arrived on time great looking tire very happy I purchased them

by:

Just returned from 2nd long road with about 3400 miles each. Also logged a few 300 mile trips. So far, holding up well. Run 50 psi. Tires are D rated. This is my 2nd set of 4(double axle). 1st set didn't quite go as far. Had sidewall failure on two of the four. Maybe bad batch. Would recommend due to steel belts and D rating. Original equip. was C rated and fiber glass belted.

Trailer tires, unlike those used on passenger vehicles, should be kept at the maximum pressure indicated on the tire sidewall, which is 70 psi in this case. Failure to keep the tires fully inflated can lead to excessive heat build-up, which is the number one cause of premature tire failure.

by:

Outstanding customer service and very fast delivery of the items a bought. Thanks again etrailer for great service

by:

I purchased two of these tires for my boat trailer 5 years ago. They had maybe 10-12k miles on them. Last fall I had one of the tires go bad - the tire cords failed causing uneven wear. It didn't blow out but I was perhaps lucky. Purchased a replacement - same tire. Last month I had a similar cord failure with the other old tire. After that problem was going to purchase 2 new name brand tires but couldn't find any D load rating tires in the 175/80R13 tires. Decided to just buy another Karrier tire. When my mechanic changed out the second tire he said the inside of this one was far worse than the first failure. I was running the tires with 55 psi of air with a max listed pressure of 65 psi. Maybe that was a factor so now running the tires at 60 psi and plan on changing them after 3 years. Not real comfortable with these tires but hopefully I can get 3 years out of them without a failure.

by:

Great response and fast shipping

tires look very good.
Will have them
mounted thursday.

  • Highest Capacity 175/80-13 Radial Tires for Boat Trailer
The highest rated 175/80-13 tire we offer is the Kenda # AM10210. This is a Load Range D tire with a 1610lb/tire weight capacity which would give you a 3220 lb capacity. If your current wheel is 4-1/2, 5 or 5-1/2 inches wide, the tire would mount on your existing wheel just fine. If your hubs have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, we also offer that particular tire mounted on a galvanized wheel as part # AM31994. Keep in mind that your trailer's capacity will be limited to the capacity...

  • Tire Recommendation for 3500 lb Cargo Trailer on Pavement/Gravel
It looks as if you've looked at a 175/80-13 tire, part # AM10210 so I'll assume that's the tire size used on your trailer. The problem lies in the fact that the highest rated tire we have in that size, # AM10210 has a 1650 lb load rating per tire, or 3300 lbs per axle which wouldn't be enough capacity for a 3500 lb trailer. I'd recommend going up to a 14 inch wheel and a Load Range D wheel/tire combo in 205/75-14 like part # AM32161 which carries a 2200 lb per tire/4400 lb per axle weight...

As long as you keep the weight of your trailer below 3300lbs the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10210 would be an exact replacement that have a load rating of 1650lbs at 70 PSI. For a tire that has a load rating higher than the GVWR of the trailer you will need to step up to a 14" wheel and use the Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10235 which has a load rating of 2200lbs at 75 PSI. This tire will be 2.2" taller overall and 1" wider...

  • Replacement Tires For an Old Trailer With B or D 78-13 Tires
It is most likely a 78-13 as that was an old tire size that was discontinued. The closest replacement is a 175/80-13. The B or D is in reference to the weight capacity of the tire. A Kenda ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST74 has a load rating B which is 1,100lbs per tire for this size. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 has a load rating of D which is 1,650lbs per tire. To determine which will work better for your trailer you can determine what your GVWR is...

  • Steps To Prevent Trailer Sway With A Utility Trailer
I suspect you have a different issue causing the fish tailing or sway while you are pulling your Kendon Utility Trailer. The main benefit of going to a load range D tire like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 is the increased load rating, but since you mentioned you're under the load rating of your load range C tires I don't think you will see any benefit. Yes, the Steel Directional Trailer Wheel - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Chrome Finish Item # AM48VR you were looking at would be capable of supporting your 4500 lbs trailer. Each wheel has a 1,660 lbs capacity which would put you well over 4,500 lbs on a tandem axle trailer. I recommend the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D item # AM10210. • Recommended Replacement Trailer Tires for Boat Trailer with P185/80R13 Tires
The P in front of the tire size 185/80R13 stands for "passenger" and is for use on an automobile. The ST in front of the ST185/80R13 you asked about stands for "special trailer" and is what we recommend for all trailer applications. The tire is made differently with thicker and stiffer side walls for trailer use. For the ST185/80-13, we only have a bias ply tire # AM1ST79. It is rated for 1,710 lbs at 65 psi and speeds up to 81 mph. We only have the ST175/80R13 size in a radial tire....

  • Can A ST185/80R13 Trailer Tire Be Used To Replace A ST175/80R13 Trailer Tire?
You will more than likely be just fine replacing your 175/80R13 tires on your boat trailer with ST185/80R13 tires like the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 due to them being so close in size. The ST185/80R13 will only be about 1/2" taller and about 1/4" wider, so as long as you have at least 3-1/4" between the top of your current tire and the bottom of your fenders you will be just fine. The only issue I could see with your tires is if they were underinflated or were extremely worn. Something like that could cause this sort of problem. I don't think bigger tires is the solution. If they're worn out I would replace them with the # AM10210. If your tires are in good shape then I would be checking how the trailer is loaded, specifically the tongue weight. • Upgrading Trailer Tire 175/80R13 from Load Range C to D Recommendation
A load range C ST175/80R13 tire has a 1,360 lb rating when inflated to 50 psi. So that would give you a total tire capacity of 2,720 lbs. It sounds like your trailer will be around 3,000 lbs when totally loaded to it's max so upgrading to at least a load range D would be a great idea as this will give you 1,610 lbs of capacity at 65 psi. For that you would want the part # AM10210. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the max PSI rating listed for the tire. If a trailer tire is inflated...

The Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208 will provide more surface area of the tire to be on the ground than the ST175/80R13 # AM10210. This can help reduce sway as there is more friction preventing the trailer from being pushed sideways but will not be a largely significant change.
