Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I run these load stars on my 2 ultralight aircraft trailers.

by:

Great tires! Much better than the wore out cracked ones that came with the trailer. I can haul my water now without any worries. Tires showed up aired up a few days after I ordered them. Would definitely buy again from this company.

by:

Bought 5 tire and wheel combinations. They came mounted and ready to go. They had the load range “D” I was looking for. Tires look great. Ready to go fishing!

by:

Received the order today and I must say the ordering, shipping and customer service is outstanding. Now about the product. The galvanized finish on both wheels leaves a lot to be desired. The single tire appears to be slightly deformed but I think that is just from packaging. One of the rims also has a slight bend near the tire bead. The dot code shows that all three tires are at least a year old. I will mount the tires on my trailer next weekend and attempt to have the single tire mounted on my spare wheel. I will give a rating after I see how they work. I'm not trying to be picky but I expected a little better considering they are new.

by:

A while back I purchased a used 5 x 8 trailer. The wheels were starting to rust and the tires were shot! The "tire store" down town wanted a little over $50. to mount a new tire on my rusty wheels....

I happened to find Etrailer on line. I got brand new tires mounted on galvanized wheels for about the same price! They are so easy to deal with! I ended up replacing everything on the trailer (bearings, lights, springs, tires, wheels etc.) from etrailer!

Better sit down for this one: They even called me at home to see how the project was going, and if there was anything else they could do to help....When was the last time someone did that! Certainly not in my lifetime (and I'm over 70!).

It doesn't get any better than this! Go on their website (or call them), get what you need, and be done with it......

Thanks etrailer!

Perfect! Couldnt be better!

I was about to order tires somewhere else and my friend who has packages shipped here had a package of trailer tires delivered and I saw the name on the side of the package so I went online to your website. Found exactly what I needed for less than I was going to pay and with free shipping, I believe I got better quality tires for less money and free shipping all because I saw each trailer.com on the side of the box. Thank you again, and I will be telling everybody about you

by:

fast delivery look good will install tonight, eager to get onto boat trailer , getting ready to fish

by:

got exactly what was ordered and the rims had metal valve stems too - a necessary item if your boat trailer has to go through deep sand. Rims came in two in a box with appropriate packaging. Would definately order again

by:

Great tire/wheel combo. Wheels have metal valve stems. Lowest price in the Web!

1-year and still look brand new. Heavy duty tires. The galvanized Rims have no rust whatsoever.

by:

The tires on my Drift Boat trailer were getting checked. Needed new tires and wheels so looked around at the local discount stores and found some that were
OK but load range B. Saw these tires and wheels at Kenda and bought them. They are a load range D with a heavy hot dip galvanized wheel. Perfect for what I needed. The wheels actually look quite nice. New tires on the trailer and off to go fishing. Thanks Kenda.

by:

I use my trailer for handyman work, So some days it carries a few sheets of plywood and others 600lbs of roofing. I needed a high load capacity tire package and they look better then my old boat trailer like wheels. I am going to rewire my trailer and guess were I'm shopping for lights you guessed right eetrailer.

by:

I love the tire. I also like the metal valve stems that you use.

by:

My first impressions of the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D - AM30861 are good, everything delivered as expected. Removed old wheels and bolted these on, noticed there is a label recommending to check and re-tighten lug nuts at the first 10-25-50-100 miles. I chose this wheel/tire because it was the highest load rating for my 4'x10' Utility/ATV trailer. I hope the galvanized finish lasts better than paint and I personally think it looks better than painted wheels. I purchased 3 total to have a spare on the trailer and mounted it with a MaxxTow Spare Tire Carrier for 3" x 5" Trailer Frames - 4-Lug and 5-Lug Wheels - MT70214. I also purchased a Master Lock Spare Tire Carrier Lock - 262DAT, but unfortunately the bolts were too long on the spare tire carrier and the lock would not fit. Next time I am at the hardware store I will get a shorter bolt so it will fit.

by:

5 lug on 4-1/2” bolt pattern worked w/ new 1” thick aluminum adaptor plates that converted obsolete 5 on 5-1/2 to modern 5 on 4-1/2. The new wheels and tires completed my restoration of a 1958 Tee Née boat trailer. Great service high quality product. Your video presentation, of the wheels and tires, was good assurance that we were on the same page before ordering. Thank you etrailer.

by:

Placed my order hoping I would get it in a couple of weeks before I left for Maine.
Instead I got it in a "WEEK", how good is that for customer service! I also ordered the spare tire carrier FSTC1000301which came in the same shipment. I mounted it as you can see and it worked out great. Thanks George

by:

Wish they had the aluminum wheels my size but the galvanized wheels look nice and were a perfect fit for my snow bear utility trailer. Ordered over the phone with Ed, very polite and knowledgeable.

by:

Look great and super fast delivery

These are great wheels and tires. Look great and work well for my double wave runner trailer. I highly recommend them.

by:

Just got these yesterday......dropped off at the gate as requested. Picked them up today. Will put them on my boat trailer in a bit. Might even send a picture as they look good. Price and promptness of delivery was excellent on both counts. Etrailer has yet to fail me and I'm not up to date with reviewing my purchases, but I find no fault with them. Good outfit!

by:

The 3.19 center hole was as close as I could find to the 3.25 I needed. Some sanding solved the problem and this will make a great spare for my old Johnson Marine trailer.

by:

OUTSTANDING customer service, communication and EXCELLENT pricing...
Won't shop for trailer tires anywhere else...EVER!
geo and tami

by:

The bolt holes were partially blocked by galvanizing material. I had to use a round file to clean them out. That's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars.

by:

Tires work very good. Made trailer pull much better than before. Great quality.

by:

I got the 5.30 X 12 inch tire/wheel combo, load range D, for a small utility trailer, so they are fine for the intended use. The tires are nice but the wheels are chinese made and the galvanized coating is not as nice appearing as other wheels in my garage that are 20+ years old. Like I said, they are going to be fine for the "Old Reliable" trailer on which they are mounted, but I just hope that the galvanized finish stands the test of time. The price was good, with no shipping cost, and etrailer.com was fast on the order and the wheels got here pretty quick....

Dan

How did your galvanized coating hold up over time. Do you think the white wheel would have been better?

Rachael H.

8/17/2015

Thanks for your feedback Lamar, overall we have received better feedback on the traditional steel wheels that are painted. The galvanized coated wheels have not been as highly rated as the wheels that are likely like your 20 year old wheels in your garage.

by:

Of order @ follow up on my order. 5 star!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

Working out great! I would give five stars rating !!!!!

Bought these tires from you back in Sept. 2018. Installed them on a home built trailer we used for the last 6 months traveling from Arizona to Texas. Highways and lots of dirt roads, we were camping the whole way. Never a problem, tracked perfectly, hardly any wear after 4000 miles. Great tires, great service and a great company to do business with, thanks so much!

Jim S.

3/10/2020

Still a great tire! We’ve put a total of near 20,000 miles on these trailer tires and no problems whatsoever. Camping in 2019 and this year hauling all our gear from Arizona up to Montana, across to Michigan then back across the country to home. Many dirt roads and potholes, never an issue with our purchase. Thanks so much for asking!

  • What is the Highest Capacity and Highest Speed Rated 12 Inch Wheels With Good Corrosion Resistance
I suggest going with the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" Galvanized Spoke Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM31202 as it has a speed rating of 81 mph and a weight capacity of 1,220 pounds at 65 psi. The galvanized wheel will be corrosion resistant, and the radial tire will stay cooler while driving on the road, so will extend the life of the tire.

  • Recommended Replacement Tire/Wheel for Boat Trailer for Interstate Highway Travel
Since you want to make long-distance highway trips with your boat you will be best served by a tire that can safely handle faster highway speeds above 65-mph. The only way to do this is to purchase the tire and wheel separately and then have them mounted at a local shop. For tire I suggest the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C, Item # TT53012C. This tire can handle 1,050-lbs at 80-psi and it is rated for speeds up to 81-mph. This is an excellent choice so long as...

  • Best 12 Inch Galvanized Tires and Rims for Small Boat Trailer
A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. Radial tires generally run cooler than bias tires, which usually leads to a longer life for radials. I would recommend going with a radial tire if possible, but provided you heed limits such as load range and psi, a bias tire will also work. We currently offer three different tire sizes that have 12 inch diameters and galvanized 5-lug rims. You can check your current tires to...

Your trailer hubs are most likely lug centric and not hub centric. If you have tapered lug nuts that hold on your wheels then you have a lug centric hub and the pilot hole diameter will be okay being larger. Mixing your load range should not be an issue since you are going larger. The higher load rating will have a stiffer construction that will cause the tire to bounce more than absorb on bumps. As this is for a spare tire you will not be using it for long periods of time. You can...

The Difference in these two packages is the tires that are on them. The load ratings are different and thus will each respond different when driving. I suggest going with the tire that your trailer is specified to use. # AM30850 Utilizes a Load Range C tire that has a wheel capacity of 1,045lbs. Max inflation pressure is 80psi, which gives this tire more absorption when driving which will equal a smoother ride. # AM30861 Utilizes a Load Range D tire that has a wheel capacity of 1,250lbs....

  • How Long Do Trailer Tires Typically Last
Trailer tires rarely actually wear out due to mileage. Typically they get old enough that they start to dry rot which turns into leaking and then also can turn into the tire failing on the highway. Right around 6 years is the standard recommended trailer tire life. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • What Pressure Should Trailer Tires be Kept At
We always recommend to run the maximum air pressure stated on the sidewall of the trailer tire. That is the safest thing to do because then you have the maximum weight capacity covered for any type of load you will be hauling. This prevents heat build up and diminished capacity as well as provides best ride quality for the trailer.
