Video Transcript for Americana Metal Bolt-In Valve Stem Review

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the Americana Metal bolt-in valve stem. So, here's what our valve stem is gonna look like when we have it installed on our wheel here. Now, the main difference between this valve stem and the other ones you're gonna see on the market is that this one's metal and most of the other ones are rubber, because they're more cost effective. So, you may be wondering why you would want a metal valve stem. Well, this is pretty simple. In regards to trailer wheels, the metal valve stems actually have a much higher pressure rating.

This one here is rated for over 100 PSI. Now, granted, they don't give a max PSI, but you'll be comfortable to go over 100 without any issues, and most trailer wheels aren't gonna go too much over that. So, one of the most common questions we get here at etrailer is people want to upgrade the tires on their trailer, that's usually the first thing they do when they get a trailer, they wanna upgrade to a higher load range or a higher-ply tire so they have more room for air and they can load more in their trailer. So, when doing this, they're concerned about the PSI rating. So, obviously the trailer tire you're gonna be using is gonna have a new PSI rating, usually higher than the one that we're replacing it with.

Therefore they're worrying about the wheel being a weak point. Well, that's a really good question, but the trailer wheels actually don't have a PSI rating. The PSI rating comes from the valve stem itself. So, a lot of the rubber valve stems that come installed in your wheels from the factory, now I can't speak for all of them, but I would say a good rule of thumb is those usually limit themselves to about 65 PSI. So if you go with a higher load range tire that requires more PSI in the tire and wheel, you will need to upgrade the valve stem, and that's where this metal bolt-in valve stem comes into play.

In regards to compatibility, you're really not gonna have any issues here with this valve stem, it's gonna fit pretty much any trailer wheel option on the market. Now we'll go into this a little bit more further in the video, but basically, there's two standard valve stem hole sizes. If you have a 16 inch and up wheel, it's gonna use a larger size. And if you have anything under that, it's gonna use the smaller size and no matter which you have, this is gonna work with both. So if you guys are using any TPMS sensors with your trailer wheels, they're gonna work just fine with these valve stems.

You're not gonna have any issues at all. So to start our installation today, we're gonna take our wheel here and we're gonna locate the valve stem hole. For our particular wheel, it's gonna be located down here. Now this could change, depending on the orientation of your wheel. So what we need to do is we can do one of two things. So we can either measure that valve stem hole with a set of calipers, or we could just simply note the diameter of our wheel. So this is a 15-inch-diameter wheel. And I know the 15-inch-diameter wheel uses that smaller valve stem, because there's actually two standard sizes. We have a smaller one, then we have a larger one. So the larger ones are gonna be on your 16 and up inch wheel. So if you have a wheel that's 16 inches in diameter or larger, you're gonna be using the larger grommet. Whereas if you have a wheel that's 15 or smaller, you're gonna be using the smaller grommet. Now what I mean by that is if we take our valve stem here, we take a closer look at it. I'm gonna take off the cap here. And then we're gonna have a nut here along with a washer. There's actually two grommets that are on this valve stem already. We got the smaller one up front here, and we have this larger one in the back. So we don't want to install it with both of those grommets in place. You do wanna remove them, because we're gonna be using this one, which is the smaller one. So go ahead and take that larger grommet off there. You can clearly see they're two different sizes and one of them is quite larger than the other. So because we have a 15-inch-wheel, we're gonna be using the smaller one here. Just go ahead and slip that into position, just like so. So now we'll take our partially-assembled valve stem and we'll place that up through the hole in our wheel. I'm gonna place on that retaining ring there. And then I'm going to take our little jam nut here, snug it up. Now to tighten this down, we're gonna take a 5 1/2 millimeter Allen key and there's actually gonna be an Allen head on the bottom of the valve stem there that this should go into, and then we're gonna use that to hold it, and then we're gonna tighten our nut on top with a 14 millimeter socket. Now there isn't any sort of torque spec for this, you're just gonna be tightening it by feel. You don't need to go completely overboard, but it does need to be pretty snug. So just use your common sense here. You should be fine. Now go ahead and put some air in your tires there. We always recommend here at etrailer to fill the tires to the maximum PSI listed on the side wall and that's while the tire is cold, then you'll go ahead and just screw on the valve caps and that's gonna do it for your installation. So we've got one of our wheels done here. Now we just need to repeat those same few steps on the other wheels for our trailer. But once we do, that's gonna do it today for our look and installation of the Americana Metal bolt-in valve stem..

Bolt-in, metal valve stem is 1-1/4" long and fits through 0.453" and 0.625" diameter rim holes on trailer wheels.

by:

The metal valve stems are outstanding. I would rate them a 5. However, one of mine arrived missing the nut and washer. I had to wait longer but was glad etrailer sent a replacement valve stem.

by:

Just received the metal valve stems to install on my HD car hauler. Swapping out the rubber stems as I put TST TPMS screw on sensors and after at12000 miles, I had leaks from two VS’s. I know that I shouldn’t have put them on rubber Valve Stems but oh well. I already installed one and it’s easy/simple to install. I’m fortunate to have a tractor with a front loader and fork lift attachment to break the beads on one side of the tire. Only 4 more to do.

by:

These wheels went on an R&R 20'car hauler trailer. Exactly what I was looking for.

by:

Changed to these metal valve stems to ensure reliabilty and allow me to use TPMS. I always use etrailer as they have high quality products and I appreciate their in depth tecnical knowledge along with their sales support. I also like that they keep track of what I purchased in the past, in case I want to buy the same item again.

by:

I purchase the valve to install in a portable sprayer so I don't end up going into cardiac arrest pumping up the air pressure by hand. I expect to install the valve so I can use my air compressor. Have not done it yet, so I only gave it 4 stars based on the quality of the item and the timely delivery. If it works (not defective), I will bump it up a star.

Great product ,just what I needed for high pressure trailer tire application

by:

Purchased this valve stem on the advice of etrailer to accompany the wheels I was purchasing. This valve stem will not work with the wheels I purchased, even though it was recommended by etrailer's "expert". They are simply not compatible as the washer and nut will not fit the hole for the valve stem on the wheel. Very disappointed. Not a lot of trust in etrailer.

It looks like if it werent for the washer, that valve should have worked. I reached out to the manufacturer about this and they agree with you! I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this. Americana did say that part # AM20903 or part #AM20904 will be compatible with the rims you have.

by:

I added these stainless steel valve stems to my American Racing Torq-Thrust II polished aluminum rims on my 1968 C10 pickup. They are a big appearance improvement over the old metal + rubber stems. And they add more reliability too! The next step is to add them to the rims on my double axle trailer.

by:

Very impressed w the quality of the wheels. Had 2 steel wheels crack so thankfull that won’t be an issue with these. They also made my trailer look so much better!

by:

We did not receive the valve stems in our order.

by:

Great product nice fit and finish will purchase again for my next set of trailer wheels

by:

Order was correct and arrived on date expected. Shiela, in customer service provided excellent customer service AND provided corrected delivery address to USPS enroute. Well done!

by:

One of the valve stems came damage and could not use. The rubber washer was cut. When I went to the tire place I openned the package and that when the guy showed me the stem was no good. I had to buy one from him.

by:

Still working great after a year! Installed these on my 1-ton truck and 36ft 5th wheel RV rims in order to provide rigid support for stem-mounted Tire Pressure Monitor Sensors.

Rims are still turning heads

Hubba hubba, hopefully no one is getting whiplash.

by:

I purchased these valve stems for my camper. I was concerned I may not be able to tighten them up because there is not a lot of room around where the stem comes through the rim I watched the video they had about them and they did not say the socket size so I called and was informed a 7/16 or 1/2 socket I checked a 1/2 socket and it fit so I ordered them when they arrived it takes a 9/16 socket. So a 9/16 socket will not fit. So no way to instill them. They look like they are made nice and of quality. I just wish they had of told me the right size or showed it in there video.

by:

Great customer service. Valve stems will not work for these wheels. Will need to send them back

by:

Quick shipping, nice product and great price

by:

The description on e trailer's site gave me the confidence to purchase. The instructions in packaging were very clear and easy to follow.

No problems, like them.

by:

Excellent product. So much better than rubber valve stem. Had read concerns about rubber valve stems and stem mounted TPMS sensors so we went with metal. Glad we did.

by:

Dealing with etrailer has been a nightmare. Neverending backorder and then finally product is in stock (months later than projected) but my order is cancelled because I didn't respond within 24 hours to reauthorize payment. Had to start all over again. My order finally arrives (again months later than projected) with only half of what I ordered delivered - even though my order shows fulfilled. Total B.S.

  • Recommended 16 Inch Aluminum Wheels for Horse Trailer
We have several 16" aluminum trailer wheels that have a 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern which I have attached a list of for you below. I would just double check the bolt pattern using the attached help article to make sure they are in fact the 8 on 6-1/2" pattern as not all are. The "JJ" designation that you mentioned is the type of bead seat the wheel has but it is not really relevant when selecting replacements as the tires will be the same with or without "JJ" bead seats. • Do Trailer Wheels Have a PSI Rating
In regards to a trailer wheel and tire assembly, the psi rating comes from the trailer tire and valve stem. Therefore, if the psi rating of the valve stem exceeds that of the trailer tire you will not have any issues. The trailer wheel itself does not have any sort of psi rating. The highest rated valve stem we offer is the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem part # AM20906 which is rated for over 100 psi.

Rims like the Aluminum Split Spoke Trailer Wheel - 16" x 6-1/2" Rim - 8 on 6-1/2 # AM22659HWT do not have a psi rating. Like you said, it is the valve stem that will be the limiting factor for tire pressure. • Will A Trailer Wheel With A 2280lb Load Rating Hold Up To 110 PSI From ST235/80R16 Tire?
I would be happy to help! Wheels do not have a PSI rating, as that rating is solely for the tire, and the valve stem. Since the Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # PRG80235 have a max load of 4080lbs at 110 PSI you will need to use a valve stem rated for that much pressure or more. I recommend going with the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem - 1-1/4" Long # AM20906 which is rated for well over 100 PSI, and will hold up perfectly with 110 PSI. When it comes to the...
