Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

I mounted the Winch and the first time I took the boat out, the catch that determines direction wouldn't hold. When I got home from a local lake, the strap was loose. Next time I tightened the handle so that I could tie it in place, and apparently not aware of my own strength, I twisted the shaft off at the handle. I returned the Winch and have heard nothing from e trailer since

See what our Experts say about this TowSmart Trailer Winch

  • Recommended Hand Winch for 2200 lb Boat
Although the # 348776 you'd looked at would do the job, going with a winch that has a higher capacity than what you actually need is a good idea. The winch won't need to work as hard. With this in mind, I'd recommend the # 315-W2000D from JIF Marine. The extra capacity will be helpful when you add the weight of the cargo like skis, fishing gear, coolers and gas. Normally, with a short winching distance, you could get by with a 1100-1500 lb capacity winch, but going with a winch with a...

  • Replacement Winch Options For A Fulton XLT1401 Trailer Winch
The Fulton XLT1401 trailer winch you reference has been discontinued for a while, and so are it's parts, unfortunately. Your best, and most likely easiest solution, is for a full replacement. I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15337. This winch has the same 1,400lb capacity, as well as a 20 foot strap. This option has a 9" handle, however if you prefer a smaller handle, you can use # 348776. This winch has a 1,500lb capacity, and also has a 20 foot strap.

  • How Does TowSmart Trailer Winch 348776 Lock and Unlock?
The TowSmart Trailer Winch # 348776 you were looking at locks and unlocks by moving the lever on the front of the winch up or down. This will make it so the winch ratchets in both directions, or keeping constant pressure on the lever will make it completely disengage. You can see this by checking out the 1:20 minute mark of the included video.

  • Minimum Mounting Bolt Distance Compatible with Fulton and TowSmart Single Speed WInches
I did some research into the different single speed winches you referenced of # F142102, # F142007, and # 348776. The minimal mounting bolt distance (center on center) that work with all 3 of these is 2-1/4 inches and you will want to use 3/8 inch grade 5 bolts.

  • Availability of Trailer Winch that Can Have Handle Install on Both Sides
The winch you mentioned part # 348776 can't have the handle mounted on both sides of it nor can it mount 180 degrees. For a winch that you can move the handle to the left side you can use # FW16000101. This winch is specifically designed to allow the handle to be installed on either side easily so it would work the best for you.

  • Replacing the Winches on a Sea-Doo Trailer
When replacing a winch, or winches, on a boat trailer, I always recommend one that ratchets. This way if you every loose grip, you will not need to start all over after the boat or jet ski slides back into the water. So with that being said, the TowSmart Trailer Winch - Single Speed - Ratcheting - 20' Strap - 1,500 lbs # 348776 will be the option I suggest. This is rated up to 1,500 pounds and will use the standard bolt pattern that most winches follow. However, with the way your current...

  • Replacement for Discontinued Fulton XLT1401 Trailer Winch
The Fulton XLT 1401 has been discontinued for some time, and as such, the replacement ratchet you are seeking from the photo has also been discontinued, so if your winch does not work, the best option is a new one. The XLT 1401 was a single-speed winch with a 1,400 lb capacity and 20 foot strap, and there are similar options that are high quality but won't break the bank. For one of those I recommend the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15337 if you like a longer handle (this one has a 9"...
