Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great price and quick delivery. Have not installed as of this review, but appear to be what I was looking for to install larger tires on my camping trailer.

  • Recommended Tire and Wheel for Spare to Best Match ST205/75D15 Tires with Dexstar Wheels
The most common bolt pattern for your wheel and tire size is the 5 on 4-1/2 inch. I'm not sure if you have a color you wanted to match, but based on your given capacity the tire is Load Range C so here are my recommendations for your spare. • What PSI Should Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" Black Mod Wheel Be Ran At
The Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" Black Mod Wheel # AM3S664DX needs to be inflated to it's max psi rating of 50 psi when cold. If you use lower psi you'd lower the weight capacity of the tire and cause heat to build up which will cause premature failure.

  • Are Pre-Mounted Trailer Tire/Wheel Combination Products Dynamically Balanced Like Automobile Tires
The tire/wheel combination products that we offer come from the manufacturer already pre-mounted. The tire's low spot is matched to the rim's high spot when they are mounted together. This is not the same as an actual dynamic tire balancing as you would have done when you buy new tires for your automobile but it does provide enough balance for a trailer tire. Certainly you could have trailer tires dynamically balanced by a shop that has the required equipment but it is not absolutely necessary...

  • Why Do Some Trailer Tires have the Letter R in the Size and Others the Letter D
The difference between the letters D and R on a trailer tire size is to show the different tire's construction. D stands for bias ply and R for radial. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. A radial tire flexes more...

  • Spare Wheel/Tire and Mount for a 2020 Coleman Lantern LT 274BH
In order to choose the correct spare wheel/tire for a 2020 Coleman Lantern LT 274BH we first need to know the tire size and load range. The tire size is listed on the sidewall of the tire along with the load range which should be LRC for load range c or LRD for load range d. I see you were looking at 205/75-15 tires so if that is what you have then the Castle Rock ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Silver Mod Wheel part # LHACK121 is what I would use if you have load range c tires or...

  • Can I Use a Smaller Tire for a Spare?
No, the smaller Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" Black Mod Wheel item # AM3S664DX would not be a viable option as a spare tire. I do have what you need but the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # A20RS545 will only work with wheels up to 13" diameter because the hubs do not have enough surface area to support this larger size wheel. Instead, you would want to use the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System part # ASR2000S01 with the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly part # AKIHUB-545-2-LFEZ-2K as this would provide you with a hub size that is compatible with the larger 15" wheels.
