Which Timbren Axle-Less Suspension System for On and Off Road Trailer?
Question:
Hey guys, I’m building an off-road trailer. I want to keep the capacity around 2000lbs. I want to install a Timbren axle less suspension system. What is the size difference between the off-road and regular tire system? Is it the thickness of the tire? Also, which tire would you recommend for both regular and off-road? There would be a fair bit of highway driving. I would like a 15” tire. Why we are at it, what hub would you recommend to go with each tire and suspension? Thanks for your help

Great question. The standard 2K system # ASR2KHDS01 is for standard highway driving only. The Heavy-Duty 2K system # ASR2KHDS02 will be compatible with wider tires for more of the combination use you are seeking. The # ASR1THDS01 listed for Off-Road Tires has suspension that is more robust for up to 2,200 lbs and has a longer arm for a smoother ride over a rougher terrain.
For your application, I recommend # ASR2KHDS02. It will handle better for your fair bit of highway driving as well as handle well for your off-road excursions. For this system, I recommend the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84545UC1-EZ which are the confirmed fit for this spindle which is sized to fit the larger capacity hubs.
If you want trailer brakes, then I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84546UC3-EZ along with self adjusting brake assemblies # AKEBRK-35-SA.
For your tires and wheels, I recommend the Kenda Loadstar ST205/75D15 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 15" White Spoke Wheel # AM3S640DX. The bias ply tires will work better than radials for off-road use but not quite as good as radials on the highway. Because you will be doing both on and off-road driving, the bias tires are definitely your best option. This wheel and tire combination is rated for up to 1,820 lbs at 50 psi and speeds up to 81 mph.
