Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Used them on a boat trailer for the first time today and it didn’t last 10 miles and blew one of the tires. The rim was shot as soon as o noticed. Have had them in my trailer stored until now. Maybe had them 2 months. Would not recommend these tires if they are going to blow like this. Glad the pieces of tire also runnier my boats paint! Great time! Thanks for selling trash tire and rim packages! Out $XXX and stranded on the side of the road……..

I am very surprised that it happened with the tire. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

Super quick shipping. Ordered on a Saturday they arrived on Tuesday. Installed on my utility trailer. Traveled approximately 180 miles with a quad in the trailer. Trailer towed great, very smooth compared to the old tires. Trailer towed smooth with nothing in it, old tires had a bounce.

A year later…tires and wheels still towing nice and smooth

After a recent tire blow out on my Jayco pop-up camper, I realized the rubber on the original tires had deteriorated. I researched for replacement tires and wheels and found etrailer.com! Good price for tires mounted on new wheels.

Great ordering communication. Solid specifications to match for correct ordering. Prompt and accurate shipping. Arrived and installed! Thank you, We’re back on the road for our fall trip!

by:

I ordered tires and grease seals. Parts were great, but one of the grease seals was damaged bc they shipped them in the same box with one of the tires in only a padded envelope. The is not the first time I've had issues with how etrailer ships ther parts.

by:

Great tires and rims straight out of the box. Super fast shipment thanks, will use again!

by:

I've been thinking of getting a spare tire for my utility trailer when I drove buy a abandoned trailer by the side of the road with a wheel off. I went home and searched etrailer for a spare. As always, they have the prefect solution!! This even matched my existing wheels on my trailer. Way to go ETrailer!!! I now fell much better my trailer won't be the one you see; abandoned by the side of the road!

by:

Arrived when expected. Well packaged and in good shape. Great upgrade from the small bias ply tires I was running for the last year. Nothing super fancy but still a great look on the home built teardrop.

by:

Not had them long but have had no problems with them and they ride good.

by:

Etrailer was lighting fast getting my order to UPS. UPS delivery was very fast. Packaging was very good. Item purchased was as described. My only beef was the tires are already over a year old. DOT manufacture date on my purchased tires are 3122. The way I understand it, Kenda only has a limited warranty for five years after manufacture’s date. I’ve already lost 25% of my limited warranty before the first tire revolution.
From Kenda’s website:
Eligibility: A tire is eligible for warranty coverage under this Limited Warranty only if the tire is presented by the original owner and consumer within five (5) years of the tire manufacture date

Probably won’t matter, the sun will kill the tires first. Yet another global warming issue.

I wanted to let you know that the warranty of the tire starts with the manufacturing date on the tire. If you should need a copy of the invoice, you can always reach out to us.

by:

Perfect fit and finish! These wheels and tires were installed on 34 year old 3 rail motorcycle trailer. Restoring the trailer with some upgrades to get it back on the road.

by:

Nice paint job on the wheels. I like the tread pattern on the tires. Got these for a hopefully smoother ride with light loads, so I can run a little lower pressure than bias tires.

by:

Introduced to etrailer through Youtube videos posted by individuals who provide informative evaluations of companies and products. Purchased Kenda tires and rims, based on over 5000 positive reviews, from etrailer and the buying process was a breeze. I received a quality product, offered at a fair price, and delivered as promised right into my garage. The tires and rims are an excellent upgrade to my small utility trailer. I will definitely turn to trailer for all of my future needs.

by:

Very nice tire and rim. Had him on the trailer before and went several thousand miles no problems

by:

Great tires and rims! Very quick delive ry!

by:

I don’t know if the tires will last long term but the date code on all four tires was 2022. They look good and the black steel rims look nice also. They were shipped and delivered within just a few days. So far so good.

by:

Seems like a very good tire and rim have not had a chance to mount it as a spare for my 14 foot UTV trailer.

by:

Quick shipping, everything looked great, got what I expected which is nice. 5x8 utility trailer rolled so much better with these radials, a huge difference compared to the old bias plys that were original equipment. I like the black wheel, though realistic about the life of the steel in northeast salt. I coated inside of wheel with rust spray coating. Overall pleased.

by:

Great tire and wheel. Very fast shipping! Great service.
Thank you etrailer.com!!

by:

Tire/wheels arrived quickly and works great! Had a local tire store to balance them before installation. They run smooth at interstate speeds.
Thanks!

These wheelstires have worked out great after a year of use. Loan this trailer to family, friends, I use it locally, and travel to neighboring state at interstate speeds without any issues. Recommend this wheeltire!

by:

The delivery was really fast and the items look great. Your up to date tracking is awesome. My tires on rims came in their own boxes and undamaged. Will definitely use etrailer for my other trailer needs.

by:

Fast delivery and delivered right to my back gate at home.

These tires are for my travel trailer for the start of a 10,000 mile Alaska trip this summer.

I will post a review when I return.

No issues on 12,000 mile Alaska trip! I had my Ford dealer add nitrogen. I never had any luck w my Goodyear tires and these replacement tiresrims worked great.

by:

Great transaction, will always check in with all my trailer needs

by:

I bought this for a spare for my motorcycle trailer. I have not used it yet and hope I never have to. But the tire and rim are of good quality. The price was very competitive and shipping was included. It arrived on time. I couldn’t be more satisfied with this purchase.

by:

I converted my trailer from 12 to 13 inch tires. So far so good. The trailer pulls great. Shipping was fast order was accurate.

by:

Order shipped quickly and received in no time. Highly recommend!

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for Size 175/80-13
For just a tire in the size you need of 175/80-13 the part # AM10210 would be a really great option that has plenty of weight capacity, a higher speed rating, and is radial. Then for a wheel and tire to use as a spare we have the part # AM31990 as well.

The speed rating for The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30110 is 65 MPH at 50 psi. It does have a lower speed rating because it is a Bias tire and more for agricultural use then highway use. For a highway use tire you could use The Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM31990.This tire is a Radial Tire and is meant for highway use which is 81 MPH at 70 psi, and has a speed rating M. • What Do 13 inch Trailer Wheels Have for Offset
Hey William, the great thing about trailer wheels is that they are always zero offset so you don't need to consider that when picking out a replacement solution. The other thing that is nice is that basically all 5 lug trailer wheels are 5 on 4-1/2 inch like what the part # AM31990 that you referenced has. So this would be a great solution to take with you for bringing the trailer home.

  • Can I Upgrade The 12 Wheels On My Trailer To 13 Wheels?
Upgrading wheels on a trailer is a pretty common thing to do, but you want to make sure you have the space to do so. You should have at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender/wheel well and then around 1.5" between the tire's sidewall and the side of the fender/wheel well. This measurement is less important than the space at the top of the tire, but is still something to keep an eye on. With that said, as the average 5.30x12 tire will have an outer diameter of 21.9"...
