Changing ST185/80-13 Tire Size on Shorelander Boat Trailer

Question:

I have these tires on my shorelander boat trailer. Looks like your ST 175 /80R13 have more weight capacity than what my ST 185s have. My current tires have 1460lbs capacity. Can I replace with ST 175? Heading on 1200 mile trip fishing.

Because the size of both tires is so similar, you can certainly use the # AM31952 as a replacement.

An ST185/80-13 tire will typically be slightly larger in diameter and width than an ST175/80-13 tire, but only by around 1/4 inch. Although the # AM31952 has a higher load rating than your existing tires, this higher rating will not provide any additional capacity over and above the capacity of your axle.

For instance, lets say that your boat trailer uses a 2,000 lb axle. Two of the # AM31952 tires would offer a 2720 lb capacity, but you will still be limited by the lowest rated component which in this case would be the axle.

You can make this change as long as you have enough wheel well clearance to work with. An ST175/80-13 tire/wheel like the Kenda # AM31994 will be about 2.2" larger in height/diameter (although only half this difference will actually affect wheel well clearance) and 1.4" wider. We recommend maintaining at least 4-1/2" of space between the top of the tire and fender.
