Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Great tires

by:

I recently put the tires on, but so far so good. I went to the website to replace the tires on my 2002 Coleman Bayside Elite. I had a tread separate on my way home from a trip to NH. The tires were only 2 years old, but I got duped by a local tire shop and overpaid for cheap Chinese tires. I was just about to order the same bias radial tire when I saw in the notes they weren't good for long trips on the highway. Our trips are usually at least 2 hrs one way all highway. I called the customer service line and spoke to Adam E., whom was very knowledgeable and helped to get me the Karrier Load Star radials. Thanks to his help, I feel much more secure pulling my trailer on the highway. I called on Monday and the tires were here by Thursday. With free shipping, you can't find a better deal. Thanks Adam and etrailer.com for the ease and piece of mind.

Needed load range D 13” rim, no body local has it , and nobody locally can get me one.
Using on boat trailer.
Thanks etrailer for having this tire!

by:

Tires arrived within a couple of days. All in good shape. Had them mounted and balanced at local tire shop. Just got home from first camping trip for tires. They rode and towed well. Very pleased!

by:

I finally got the tires put on my boat trailer. They look good and have the load rating I was looking for. I was also happy for the fast and excellent service. I got just what I order. I will be getting one more for my spare.

So far I’ve been happy with my purchase. I’m impressed with the tires performance. One day I will be replacing my Spear tire with the same one, as was mention earlier.

by:

Perfect match, good price

by:

Great price great service and great peo ple!!

by:

Price and quality are what I look for, etrailer pulled it off as usual. Kenda is known to be a good trailer tire.
I purchased the tires to replace the new cheaper tires that failed on a long trip ( didnt follow my own advice ) , lesson learned.

0 problems

by:

11,000 miles this summer in 2000 Bayside elite towed all over America. Proper inflation and keeping those hubs greased meant not one tire blow out the whole time. Tire tracks straight, runs cool, and is very quiet.

by:

Outstanding customer service! Communication was great and shooing was SUPER fast

by:

your representative was very curtious & helpful. took care of my need's!

by:

I was happy with the order and delivery time for my two camper trailer tires and I could not have been happier about the price. I have put a few hundred miles on them so far and all seems well. Ashley was helpful with my order and estimated delivery of the tires. I believe that , depending on future performance of these tires that I would purchase tires at etrailer again.

by:

Came sooner than expected!

by:

Product came in a timely manner.
Exactly
as described
Will order from etrailer again.

Karrier Kendra 185-80-13 radial tire for boat trailer spare , load range D. Excellent tire that matched stock tire for a Bass Tracker Classic XL only difference it is a load range D instead of a C. Weight is a max of 1725 lbs., better then C load range. Will definitely buy again if & when I need tires for my trailer!

Fast Delivery and good service

by:

I've have very good success with the Kenda Karrier tires. Not one issue, holds pressure and no noticeable wear to date.

by:

I received the tires and when I went to inspect the tires I noticed the manufacture date was 4619, which is November 11,2019. Received the tire on June 12,2021 almost a year and half of time gone if you go by the 5 year tire replacement on China tires.
I called and talked to etrailer and they said they were authorized to sell the tires up to 2 years from manufacture date. Something to consider if your wanting to receive newer tires to reduce chances of incident on trips. Not crazy about it! But will strongly consider it at next purchase time for sure.

by:

put them on my car dolly they work just fine

  • Recommended 13" Tires With Higher Speed Rating For Pop-Up Camper
We have several options for you, please note the linked selections below. My recommendation for a radial tire since radial tires run cooler and track better than bias ply tires and from your statement that appears to be an area of focus. I suggest the 13" tire with a load range of D and an M speed rating (81 mph), the Kenda Karrier, # AM10208. This ST185/80R13 radial special trailer tire has a ply rating of 8 and a 1,710-lb maximum load at 65 psi. It is constructed of double steel belts...

  • Is it Okay to Mix Tire Load Ranges on 2001 Coleman Fleetwood Utah Pop-Up Camper
Unless you find yourself in an emergency situation and have no choice, you'll want to make sure that the load ratings of your trailer tires are all the same, and that their combined weight capacity or rating meets or exceeds the GVWR of the trailer. Your Load Range C tire is currently being overloaded, unless the as-towed weight of the trailer is less than 2960 lbs. I would recommend replacing your existing load range C tire with a load range D tire like the Kenda # AM1ST79 if you're...

  • Can You Put The 13" Kenda Radial Tires On A Lowes Carry On Trailer
You can put the 13" Kenda Radial Tires like the # AM10208 on a Lowes carry on trailer, provided the trailer uses a standard width 13" wheel which would be either 4.5" or 5" wide. You will also want to make sure there is room in the wheel well area for a tire 24.7" in diameter and 7.2" wide. As far as the stock tires, I am not sure exactly what kind of tire or exactly what size is currently on the trailer. Most of the trailer tires we carry, like the Kendas I mentioned, are to be inflated...

  • Highest Rated 13" Trailer Tires for Boat Trailer
The highest rated 13" trailer tires we offer are the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10208 which have a load range d rating suited for use up to 1,710 lbs. These are radial tires which is best for highway travel. They will work great on a boat trailer though I would pair them with aluminum wheels like the Aluminum Hi-Spec Series S5 Trailer Wheel part # AM22323HWTB.

  • Can I Upgrade From 175/80-13 Tire to 185/80-13 Tire
You should be just fine using a 185/80-13 size tire in place of your 175/80-13 size tire but you'll want to check a few distances first just to make sure you have enough room. You need at least 4" of clearance space to your fender and then at least 2" of space to your trailer frame for adequate clearance and the larger tire size will only increase by 0.63" for the diameter and 0.39" for width so unless you're already pushing the clearance you'll be just fine. If you haven't already chosen...

It sounds like the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208 is the tire you are looking for. The difference for radial vs bias comes down to how you will be using it. Radials are best for on road and highway use, bias is best for off-road trailers. You will want to measure your trailer to ensure the tire will fit correctly. This tire has a diameter of 24.7" and a width of 7.2". You want to ensure you will still have at least 1" of side wall clearance and 3" of vertical clearance...

If you wanted a mounted wheel and tire then you can go with this set up. The Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire # AM3S334 has a 13" Galvanized Wheel, a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and is a Load Range D. If you have radial tires on your trailer currently, then you need to stick with the radials.

  • Recommended ST185/80-13 Tires for Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Carrying 23 Foot Boat
If the tires you installed are of the proper size and load rating, you should be fine. Each tire should have the load rating listed on it. The combined load rating of all 4 tires should equal or exceed the combined weight of the boat and trailer. Also, your trailer tires should be kept fully inflated to the pressure listed on the tire's sidewall. Trailer tires are load tested at full inflation, so at 5 psi less than full inflation, they will have an unknown load rating. For instance,...

  • Will Radial 185/80-13 Tires Put More Stress Than Bias Tires on Jayco Jay Feather Trailer
That's an interesting scenario because we normally recommend going with the radial-type tires or bias-type for highway usage. The radial (R13) have more flex in the sidewall which should give it better performance on the highway and help keep the heat down. If I were you I'd double check the psi rating on the sidewall. • Are Kenda Karrier Trailer Tires AM10208 High Quality Tires
Most trailer tires out there now are made in China but I would say that the Kenda Karrier part # AM10208 that you referenced is a reliable tire that will work well for you. We've sold quite a few of these tires and have had thousands of reviews at this point and the overwhelming consensus from our customers is that these are reliable and will work well so I am confident they would work great for you too.

  • Difference Between 80R13 and 80D13 Tires on Boat Trailer
Great question! The difference is that the "D" in the 80D13, like the Kenda # AM1ST79, means it is a Bias ply tire where the "R" in the 80R13, like the Kenda # AM10208, means it is a Radial ply tire. Bias tires are the original trailer tire and do a great job. They have a stiffer sidewall which makes them better for off-road and agricultural trailers. Radials are the "new" kid on the block and are designed more for highway trailer use. They have more flex in the sidewall which helps handling...

  • Comparing Radial And Bias Ply Tires For Utility Trailer Carrying UTV
I would go with a radial tire like the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 which will run cooler than a bias tire and the flexible sidewall will allow more tread to contact the road. Since you are primarily driving on the highway this would be the best choice. With either option I would do your best to avoid large potholes as hitting them will not be good for either tire at highway speeds. I included a video of the # AM10208 for you to take a look at.

The only difference between the # AM10208 and the # AM1ST79 ST185/80-13 tires you referenced is that the # AM1ST79 is a bias-ply tire while the # AM10208 is a radial. Either tire would mount just fine on a 13 inch rim that's 4, 4-1/2 or 5 inches wide, so they'll work perfectly with your existing wheels. Either tire has a 1710 lb weight capacity per tire or 3420 lb per axle so they'll easily be able to handle the 2400 lb weight of your trailer. Radial tires will provide a smoother ride...
