Video Transcript for Curt SecureLatch Pintle Hook and Mount Review

What's up, everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out the SecureLatch from CURT. It's gonna be a pintle hook/ball mount combo that you can hook up to your trailer. Whether you have a standard coupler or a lunette ring like we have right here, it can do both, so that way you don't have to buy two different ball mounts and switch them out when it's time to hook up your trailer. Either one of those, it's good to hook up and get on your way. Let's check it out.

Today we're gonna be focusing on the 2 and 1/2" hitch version with the 2" ball. So the weight capacities overall are gonna be 20,000 pounds and then for the ball it's gonna be 10,000 pounds. You can switch out the ball and get a different ball if this isn't the right size. You can go all the way up to a 2 and 5/16, that's gonna change the weight capacity to 14,000 pounds. Now, you can also just get the pintle hook if you don't want the combo.

You can get that separately as well, and it can even go up to a 2" hitch. So if that's the kind of hitch you would aim for, they have that version as well. No matter what version of this you get, they're all gonna work the same way, so let's go through the process of hooking up your trailer. First up, remove our pin, out here, then we'll back our truck up to the lunette ring, which will hit here, and you'll hear it, and it'll go down and get latched in. It latches itself automatically.

It won't be able to pop back up, so then we just replace the pin. With that in place, now I can go ahead and lower the trailer down. Seems like that auto-latch worked really well. You saw it come down through there and then pop right back up. You'll see I can't push up from the bottom, so if it popped up it wouldn't push it anywhere.

It only has that downward push there. The ring also sits nicely, down here in the hook. That's gonna sit real nice around there, and keep it probably a steady ride for you. So now we can add our pin back in to keep that secure. And then add our safe chain hooks. We can take our extra chain and hook it up on these hooks. That way it keeps it up and off the ground. Once you've parked your trailer, and it's time to unhook, just pop that pin again. That way, we can flip this latch like this, and now when we go to lift this part up it's gonna hit there and flip back over. Remember it won't go back up this way, so you can't just lift the trailer this way. We have to flip this over, and then it will release it. I'm gonna pop this pin out and show you how this moves around. Y'all have already seen the lock position and how you get it to unload, but you can actually, if you're gonna just use the ball mount for a standard coupler, if you can get this out of the way there's going to be two sets of holes I can show you here, that the pin's gonna go through. So we can just line up this one right there, put our pin back in, and now the latch is gonna stay out of the way. So then you can use your standard trailer coupler on your ball here, and just use it like you would normally. We loosened up these bolts just to show you its adjustability. So wherever you need this to be on this back plate, you can slide it and then tighten it back down. Once you figure out where you need it along these channels you can tighten these back down. Make sure you torque them so it stays in the place. Look at the instructions and see where you need to torque it to. Now you're gonna have 9 and 1/2" of adjustability up and down. So it really helps you out. You're not locked in for inch intervals like some of the other ball mounts, where you only have specific places. You have this whole area to use this, and figure out where you need it best for your trailer. Now with the hook this is gonna work with an inner diameter lunette ring of 2 and 1/2" all the way up to 3". So the ball mount here, and the pins, and all the gold-looking stuff is going to be zinc plated, so you don't have to worry about rust or corrosion. That's going to hold up a long time when you leave it outside. The rest of it is gonna be a combination of drop forged steel and cast iron. Now it doesn't come with a hitch pin, but you can get a locking hitch pin from our site, which is an etrailer brand one. That way you can lock up your ball mount when you're not around, and nobody can mess with it. Overall, I was impressed with it. I really like that it's a ball and pintle hook combo. That way I don't have to switch out my ball mount when I'm hooking up to the trailer. I can just leave it in there and it works for either one I want to pull. The other thing I like is that it works so well. That ring fit right down here in this groove here, and sat and I just felt more confident about it than I do with some of the other pintle hooks that just have that flat spot that it sits on. It just was made for that to sit in there, and stay there real nice. It was really easy to operate. I like that latch. That's a good mechanism just to know that it can't come pop back up. You're gonna be fine once you get it all hooked up. Well I think that about does it. Thanks for hanging out, and I hope this helps..

Use this to pull a 10k deck over for personal and light landscaping business use and am very satisfied. Solid, versatile, idiot-proof. No drama purchase experience.

by:

High quality hitch, wish it came with lock nuts instead of lock washers but it is great.

Kate is a Rockstar and trailer always helps me find the right solution. This product is excellent quality and fits perfectly.

When i got my F350 Service Truck, it had a 2 5/16 ball/pintle Hook hitch on it. But it was all made together (i couldn't put another size (2") ball there without unbolting the entire hitch and bolting on another one). I looked and looked for a better option that would match my bolt pattern. The hitch was bolted on through a 1 3/16 steel plate that i couldn't drill through. I called "Curt", they assured me the bolt pattern dimensions were the same as my truck. I received the hitch from them in 3 days. The black paint with the chrome ball looks nice, and the hitch itself is very Strong, Thanks guys for the very good info and product.

Fantastic product. Not one complaint.

by:

Very nice product still works great

by:

This is what I needed to use a pintle ring and a 2 5/16 ball.

by:

Exactly what I needed

by:

Perfect match lined up, and another speedy service! Definately recommend this set of product for those looking to tow heavy on the back bumper! Aloha from Hawaii

I bought a government surplus M1102 trailer but I did not have the proper hitch on my truck and my truck's hitch attach point was nearly a foot below the trailer's hitch to boot.

I found the etrailer website and purchased both a pintle hitch and large mounting plate.

I received the products quickly and I attached them to the truck today. They are prefect and work beautifully. The quality and craftsmanship are everything anyone could expect (perfect).

Aside from having truly quality products, etrailer sent me a confirmation email with a link that gave me a pictorial view of exactly where my products were as they were in transit to me.

I give etrailer dot com 5 stars only because I cannot give them 10! (serious). Etrailer will absolutely be the first place I go when ordering more products of this nature.

Thanks etrailer!

Bob B.

Nice combo

by:

Have quiet a few of these and have gotten them all from etrailer and never have a issue and shipping was fast

by:

Great ball hitch no problems with any part of it. Cable is strong for the locking pin which normally gets lost but not on this one. Great product and Thank You!

by:

I was having a difficult time hooking up to my dump trailer that had a 2 5/16 ball mount. I switched the ball to a Pintle and what a difference. I can hook on to the Pintle with this hitch the first time every time. I was a little concerned about “slop” that everyone told me would have with a Pintle. Maybe it happens with other Pintle hitches but not with this one. With the cupped design it pulls just like a ball mount.
1. Easy hook up (no more dented bumpers)
2. No slop
3. Adjustable
4. Piece of mind when I overload my dump trailer. Went from 10,000lb ball hitch to 24,000lb Pintle and still have a 2inch ball for my boat.
Listen I’m cheap, I did not want to spend the money on this I’m glad I bought it. Worth every penny.

I did recieve the product at my doorstep… and am currently using it .. works as advertised.. the first order never showed up

by:

strong hook

by:

I ordered this pintle hitch and it arrived as advertised. It was missing a few bolts nuts and lock washers. I called etrailer and spoke with George J. I explained to George what had happened and what was missing. It took George a minute maybe two minutes and he advised me the missing bolts would be shipped either today or tomorrow and no charge to me. I must say it was a pleasure dealing with George J and etrailer. George was polite, friendly and handled my issue extremely quick. I would highly recommend that anyone buying equipment consider buying from etrailer. Their prices are good and to call their customer service excellent is an understatement. I am very pleased with the outcome. Thank you George J and etrailer for an excellent shopping experience.

Works great and great service

by:

We use this to haul front end loaders and bull dozers. works great, with our 20k trailer. Will buy another when we purchase new equipment. We combined with a 14" plate mount. Note: the combo is heavy !

by:

Exactly what I needed

by:

I would rate customer service at 5, products at 4 only because I haven't installed them yet and shipping at 1 because electric brake controller was boxed with jack and hitch both heavy items and box was ripped open from shipping which is not your fault but controller was pinched between jack and hitch.

by:

I really like it, I can use it on both of my trailers. I have a dump truck and use it to pull my trailers with a tractor loaded on them with a 2 5/16 ball and my other trailer with a pintle hook.

by:

Pintle hook started to show rust after one wash of my truck. Not very pleased with that. Everything does work properly so we will see how it works out as time goes on

by:

The hitch was exactly what I was looking for and it halted right up to my truck. the trailer connecter fit the existing hole and I'll wire that this weekend. the lights are for my backhoe. The people were great to work with and it arrived earlier than I expected. Now I have a wish list to work on. I would recommend etrailer.com to anyone who needs their products. Thanks Captcarl.

According to the folks at Curt, when the # CU37FR and # C48007 pintle hooks are designed and cast, they are not designed to withstand the force they'd be subjected to if they were inverted and used as standard ball mount. You'd be best served by measuring the receiver height and the height of the trailer coupler when it's jacked up so it's level, and finding the height difference. Then choose a ball mount that would provide you with the necessary weight rating, ball size and rise for...

  • Does Curt SecureLatch Pintle Hook with 2" Ball Have Max Tongue Weight
There is not a maximum tongue weight rating for the Curt SecureLatch Pintle Hook with 2" Ball # CU37FR. That's actually true of ball mounts in general, as they are rated for towing capacity but not tongue weight. The towing capacity of the # CU37FR is 14,000 lbs or 10,000 lbs for the 2" ball for a standard coupler. The only other thing you'll need with this is a hitch lock, the InfiniteRule Hitch Lock for 2" Hitches # 34061071-D.
