Video Transcript for Brophy Ball Mount Review BH40

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're going to be checking out the Brophy trailer hitch ball mount. Now, when it comes to a ball mount, you know, you want to make sure you get the right one for your particular application. That way when you're towing your trailer, you know, you want everything to ride nice and level the way it should be. You know, you're just going to have a lot better towing experience. You know, everything will go a lot smoother.

With that said, you know, if you start looking at ball mounts, there's a ton of different options available. You know, some that are really basic all the way up to really elaborate ones that are adjustable with, you know, multiple different size balls and just about everything else in between. And, with this one, this is going to be a fixed ball mount. And so this would be ideal for those of you that have, you know, pretty much one vehicle that you pull your trailers with and maybe a trailer or two that, you know, ride at similar heights. That way, you know, everything will be nice and level.

Now in order to figure that out, you know, to make sure that this is indeed the correct one for you, there's just a couple of measurements that you have to take. And it only takes a minute and it's really easy to figure out. In order to figure out what's, you know, size drop or rise you need, what you wanna do is back your vehicle up to the trailer and get them relatively close, you know, something like this is just fine. Try to make sure they're on level ground. And what you gotta do is take a measurement from the top inside edge of the opening there in your tow hitch down to the ground, record that measurement and come over to your trailer.

Make sure the couplers level, take a measurement from the bottom of it down to the ground. And that difference there is going to determine, you know, that drop or rise that you're going to need. With that said the Brophy that we have here today, this is going to have a four inch drop. And then if you we're to take this out and flip it over, it would give you a three inch rise. So if your measurements, you know, fall within that range this one will work out for you.

Something that I do want to mention is the fact that the ball mount does not come included with a ball or a pin and clip. Not really a huge deal, you know, if you already have some laying around the house, can use those. Or if you need them, you can grab them here at etrailer. With that said, couple of things to look out for, the ball that you're using, you want to make sure it has a inch and a quarter size shank. That's what the ball mount's designed to be used with. As well as a five eighths pin and clip. So pretty standard stuff there. And you should really have no issues finding something that'll work out. One of the things that kind of separates this ball mount from some of the others is how it's built. I mean, this thing is rock solid. Everything is super heavy duty, very thick steel. And because of that, it's gotta give us some really good weight capacities. As far as the maximum gross ton weight rating goes, that's going to be a thousand pounds. That's going to be the amount of weight pushing down. And as far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's going to be 10,000 pounds. And that's going to be the amount of weight that is falling on the ball mount. So, the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have on it. Now keep in mind, you know, your towing capacity is going to be limited to the lowest rated towing component, whether it's the ball itself, your hitch or the vehicle that you're using to tow. So, make sure to look at your instructions or owner's manual and figure that number out, that way you don't exceed the rating for any of your towing components. One thing I did notice is the ball mount is relatively long. I mean, it's not, you know, coming crazy out here, but it is a little bit longer than, you know, a lot of the traditional type ones that you see. I kinda like it like that, to be honest with you, it just gives you a little bit more room in between your vehicle and your trailer, a little easier to work with and puts a little bit more distance in between the two. But with that said, you know, having that extra few inches there, make sure that the chains, the safety chains on your trailer are gonna reach and not be super tight. You know, chances are pretty good you'll probably be in good shape, but if you already got some shorties on your trailer, you might have to extend them a little bit or, or something like that. So just something to kind of keep in mind and think about. If we pull this ball mount out, I kind of talked about earlier how thick it is and everything. I mean, this thing is super heavy, it is no joke. The shank is solid steel, it's not, you know, a hollow one or anything like that. All the welds look good, I mean, it's a nice piece honestly. Definitely wouldn't hesitate to use it for myself. It is going to be designed to work with those two inch by two inch receiver tube openings. So that's a really common type hitch and this will work out well with a lot of different types of vehicles. So when it comes down to it, a really nice piece, actually, you know, when it comes to towing, you know, having something a little extra heavy duty gives you that much more confidence whenever you're pulling your trailer down the road. So, you know, it's always nice to have that peace of mind. But that said, you know, if this, if this one isn't the right one for you, let's say, you know, the drop or rise is off or you're looking for something that is a little more versatile, you know, maybe let's say you have a lot of different trucks and trailers, and you're always changing things an adjustable type ball mount, may interest you a little bit more, you know, different size balls on it and everything else. If that's something you're thinking about, I've had quite a bit of experience with a lot of different types of them, and one that I'm partial to is the BMW. They make really nice hitches and ball mounts and anything towing related, but that's not to take away from, you know, the other brands as well. They're all good products and it's really just going to depend, you know, what you're looking for. What you're trying to get out of it and what you're trying to accomplish. But, you know, with all that said, that will finish up our look at the Brophy trailer hitch ball mount..

Very heavy duty, thanks Hannah

by:

Just what I needed, quick delivery too.

by:

I needed the 4" rise of the ball mount and etrailer has so many combinations that I could get my trailer level when hooked up and loaded. Well made product and very happy with it.

by:

Good long and sturdy drawbar.

by:

It is heavy duty and works great! Thank s!!!

by:

Great ball mount. Amazing quality and finish. A solid 16.5 lbs., built to last. Made in USA.

by:

I received the items and they were exactly as described on the webs site. It took a little longer to get them than expected but I was kept update to date with the order all the way through the shipment to my door. Great experience I would recommend them and shop with them again.

Slightly longer, so you can open your tailgate with a cargo trailer attached. Trailers with a tongue jack that is forward are problematic for tailgates...

by:

I’m pleased with the product and how prompt the delivery was. However the packaging was insufficient and the packaging was torn open all over. Scuffing of the finish is a result and of little consequence due to the intended use. It’s a stinger w/ball for motorhome. May I suggest better packaging in the future

by:

Love “etrailer” !! Always have what is ordered and send the item very timely. I always check with etrailer first as they are well stocked. Thank you etrailer.com!! Also George!

by:

I didn’t receive the ball mount. Only thing in the box was anti rattle device

by:

This is really nice. Beveled edges so it slips into receiver hitch so sweet. Beautiful welds heavy weight mount for my weigh safe ball. I bought a 10,000 lbs hitch and I wanted a draw bar with the same type rating. Now the only thing limiting my trailer capacity is my truck's ability to tow, not the hitch, bar or ball.

by:

I purchased a Ranch Hand rear bumper for my 2500HD but wanted to retain the use of a receiver hitch. The ball mount would need to extend 8" from the pin hole to even reach the edge of the bumper. This BM29 ball mount works out perfect. The welds look great and the finish is just fine. The only complaint I have is they gained a little length by moving the pin hole a little closer to the end shortening the insertion amount slightly. Not a big deal, it is just noticable next to the other mounts I have at the house.

by:

The products themselves I’m sure will do the job. I’m very disappointed in how they arrived. Poorly packaged, one piece of paper wrap did nothing. There was a hole in the box from the hitch not being wrapped up. There are chips in the powder coat.

by:

Great price and fast ship.Thanks

by:

Needed to extend my hitch due to tailgate needing to be open. E-Trailer had this one on hand for a very decent price. Easy order, and fast shipping. Thank YOu.

by:

Just bought a set of front steps for my boat, and needed some extra length on the ball mount.
This mount fits the bill at 13 1/4 long

by:

Perfect size for a 2004 Jeep Liberty with spare wheel on back. Very nice quality. I can now mount my trailer hassle free.

by:

BM20 Long Drawbar. Perfect for my 2005 Jeep Liberty. I no longer have to remove the spare to tow. Solved what was a major pain!

by:

Great hitch. Just what I wanted. This will keep my utility trailer "on the level".

by:

Great for chassis cab trucks with long boxes.

by:

Gives me the extra 6" extension I need so that the rear liftgate on my van can open without hitting the trailer jack, or the spare tire which I carry on the trailer tongue.

This is a VERY solid piece, would easily handle far more than my 300lb tongue weight.
As usual etrailer delivered exactly as promised.

just what i needed

  • What Is The Rise and Drop Of The Brophy Heavy Duty Ball Mount BH40?
I apologize for the confusion and this has since been updated. The Brophy Heavy Duty Ball Mount # BH40 you were looking at has 4" drop and 2-3/4" rise along with a 10000lb trailer weight rating. This ball mount uses hitch balls with a 1-1/4" shank so you will need either 2" hitch ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 19286. I included a video of the ball mount mentioned for you to take a look at.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a Trailer that Needs 2-1/2 inches of Rise
From the measurements you listed you would need a ball mount that has 2-1/2 inches of rise to tow your trailer level. The closest ball mount rise we offer that would work great is 2-3/4 inches of rise. For that you would want the # BH40. Since your rear suspension will sag slightly when the tongue weight of the trailer is put on it this ball mount would be perfect. I attached a help article on picking out the correct ball mount for you to check out as well.

  • Dimensions of Brophy Ball Mount # BH40 from Pinhole to Edge of Ball Mount
I spoke with my contact at Brophy and she told me the measurement from the center of the pinhole to the nearest edge of the ball mount opposite the hitch ball hole is 2-1/2 inches. I have included a diagram that shows the requested dimensions.

  • How is Rise and Drop Calculated for a Ball Mount
Rise and drop for a ball mount is calculated from the top of the hitch opening. The thickness of the ball mount platform also plays into this as well. So from the hitch opening down to the ball mount platform for the # BH40 the ball mount measures 4 inches. When you measure from the top of the hitch opening to the ball mount platform when in the rise position you get 2-3/4 inches. I attached a review video for this product and a help article on determining how much rise/drop you would...
