Video Transcript for Curt Chrome Ball Mount Review C45296

Hey everybody, Brian here at etrailer today. We're going to be checking out the Curt Chrome plated trailer hitch ball Mount. So when it comes to a ball Mount, you know, you want to make sure that you get the appropriate one for your particular application. And it really does make a difference on, you know, how it's going to pull your trailer down the road and everything like that. When you have the appropriate drop or rise, you know what everything is level with that said, you know, you start to, you know, start checking out some of the ball mounts, and there's a ton of 'em available everything from a really simple one to, you know, ones that are adjustable with multiple size balls and everything in between. And honestly this one here would be a good option for you.

If you, you know, had one particular vehicle that you generally towed with and, you know, even a trailer, maybe a few, but all those trailers rode at kind of the same height, generally speaking. And I said, because this is a fixed one. So once you put this into your hitch, you know, this is going to be the height that you have to work with. One of the things that does kind of separate this one from some of the others is the fact that it is chrome-plated so kind of, you know, it's a little easier on the eyes, you know, and, and I think it looks pretty good, especially on a vehicle like this, you know, on a Cadillac or something. It kind of pops a little bit more and kind of blends in with the vehicle with that said, though, you know, Chrome plating, I'm always a little skeptical about, because, you know, in the past I've had some Chrome things, I'm sure everyone's had a little experience with it and, you know, they, they start to rust and kind of show some oxidation and things like that.

And when that happens on something shiny like that, it it's kind of even more noticeable and a little more annoying I'm unfortunately I don't have, you know, a year, a couple years worth of experience using this particular ball Mount. So I can't speak to that, but I feel like, you know, as long as you are, when you're done using it, put it away out of the weather, out of the humidity, you know, I feel like it should hold up. You know, however you maintain something is how it's going to turn out. And, you know, with all that said, why don't we go ahead and kind of talk about and make sure that this is even the ball Mount you're going to need. So we'll kind of run through a couple measurements to help you figure that out.

You know, to figure out if this is going to work for you or not, it's really simple, take your towed vehicle and back it up to your trailer that you plan on towing. And you want to try to get on, you know, about like this distance is fine and on level ground, and you're going to measure it from that top inside edge of your receiver tube opening there, or your hitch opening, down to the ground record that measurement, come over to your trailer coupler, make sure it's level measure from the bottom of the coupler down to the ground and whatever that difference is there, that's going to determine what size drop or rise that you're going to need. So I didn't mention this as a foreign strop in a two inch rise. And, you know, technically speaking those measurements, aren't exact, it's really a three and a half inch drop and a two and quarter inch rise. But you know, it's not uncommon just to kind of round up or down to the nearest number when it comes to these ball mounts.

Cause you know, honestly, you know, when you're taking that trailer measurement, you know, you start getting into the half inch and quarter inch, you're kind of splitting hairs. So this one, you know, as long as you're in the ballpark, you'll be in pretty good shape. But that said, I know I mentioned this ball Mount does not come with a ball or a pin and clip. So you will, you will have to get them separately if you have some old, but still good ones laying around, that's perfectly fine. That's what we set up here today. So reuse the ball from an existing hedging or pin and clip if you don't have those components, not a big deal, they are available here at etrailer just to make sure that the pin and clip you get is going to be that standard five eight in diameter and make sure that the ball you end up going with, you want the shank to be one inch. That's what size shank the ball Mount is designed to work with. As far as the weight capacities go, it's going to have a 750 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating. And that's going to be the amount of weight that's pushing down. And that's going to have a 7,500 pound maximum gross trailer, weight rating. And that's going to be the amount of weight that is pulling on it, but keep in mind, you know, your limiting factor is going to be, you know, your, your weakest component. If that makes sense, let's say, you know, it's going to, you know, determine or going to matter how much your hitch is rated for as well as how much weight your vehicle's rated to tow. So you can figure that information out, get your owner's manual or your instructions, whatever, whatever the case may be. And you never want to exceed the lowest rated components. This ball mount is going to work with those two inch by two inch tow hitch openings here and really common size, you know, a lot of people have that size. And as far as the shank goes here, that where the pinhole is, it's kind of in that good spot. You know, it's not super close to the edge here, so it'll be weak, but it's not so far up that you're not really to be able to use it. So unless you have an oddly shallow Hitch or one that, you know, the tube comes way out here, the chances are pretty good you're going to be able to plug this in to your trailer hitch and use it without any issues. So at the end of the day, a, a nice ball mount, you know, it's really straightforward. I think it looks really good if you are concerned with the Chrome kind of plating or anything like that in the future. If you, you know, if you live in a really wet type or environment, really humid, one way to ensure that you can have a great shine is by using an aluminum type ball Mount, you know, that's going to resist all the corrosion and things like that. So if that's something you're worried about, one that I like is new Brophy brand, they're really well-built and I've, I've seen a few of them and I really liked them. I'm a fan of them. The same note, if you know, you plan on using a ball Mount, one ball Mount for different vehicles and pulling a bunch of trailers, you can always look into an adjustable type ball Mount. And a lot of those you can move up and down and, you know, they have multiple different size balls on them and everything like that kinda cover all your bases, but if that's something you're interested in. I'm kind of partial to the BMW line, they're really good, but that's not to take away from the other manufacturers as well. You know, they all make pretty good stuff and it's kind of really just going to depend on, you know, what you're looking for and what you're going after. But with all that said, that'll finish up our look at the Curt Chrome plated trailer hitch ball mount..

Purchased because I wanted something that looked a little better than the standard black ball mount and couldn’t find the size I wanted in aluminum. I used it 3 times last season and put it away for the winter in my garage. It was never on the truck while salt was on the road. Pulled it out the other day and it is a disgusting rusty mess. Attempts to clean off the rust were unsuccessful it was that bad. Total waste of money
BTW the picture is post cleaning, it was even worse before

Allan, thank you for your review. If you live in a humid area or store the ball mount in a humid environment it may rust. I would recommend to store the ball mount in a ball mount bag when not in use such as part # ETBMB. I also recommend purchasing an aluminum ball mount such as part # C84WR. This Curt ball mount has a 4 inch , 3 inch rise, supports up to 8,000 pounds and takes a 1 inch diameter shank hitch ball. I have also attached a link about rust prevention.

My shipment came in on time and everything that I ordered was shipped correctly. All items were in great condition and not damaged. I am very happy with my order with etrailers. I will not hesitate to let anyone know where to purchase trailing equipment at a great price. Thank you so much for you help. I will install the hitch and all accessories next week and I will take pictures of the final install.

by:

High-quality finish. Feels solid. Fit as described; we're using it in the raised position. Love those etrailer videos with their rulers and detailed measurements! They really helped me pinpoint the right product.

by:

Excellent service and communication!

by:

ETrailer always has what I need , great quality products, great prices, and it gets shipped earlier than expected, thanks and look forward to doing business with you soon!

Met my expectations. It is not "show" chrome, so be realistic about how perfect the finish is, the raw steel was chromed and that is about it. I wish it was packaged better. This was loose in a box with a loose ball, the ball was smashing around and banging against this draw bar. It was banged up a little even before I could us it, kind of defeated the purpose of buying a shiny new draw bar. The Drop/Rise is accurate and was the right level for my boat trailer when hooked to my GMC Yukon, where the receiver is rather high on the bumper.

by:

Works perfect
Log splitter weighs a
ton!
Now it's easy to hook and unhook.
Thanks so much!

by:

You can tell it's a well made durable hitch. I needed a 2" drop so my RV would pull level and this hitch did the trick. The chrome hitch also looks so much better than my old back one.

by:

Looks great!

by:

Package arrived on time and was packed with care! Thank you so much!!

by:

Perfect height.

by:

Completely rusted after just 3-4 months. I bought the Chrome so I wouldnt have an ugly rusted ball. But nope. This one rusted just as fast, if not faster. It makes my truck look like crap.

by:

Excellent quality. It ha held up beautifully. Highly recommend.

by:

No rusting, been in truck hitch entire time and still easily come off if needed. The 5 3/4" drop is a bit much for some of my trailers. Would be better if they made a 5" drop.

by:

Super high quality. Solid welds. etrailer never fails me! EVER!

by:

I requested 2 day shipping but forgot to check calendar as it involved a weekend and ended up 5 days. My fault. I am happy with the hitch mount and ball. I would use e trailer again.

by:

The eTrailer web site is easy to navigate. Great selection of products.
The ball mount has a very nice chrome finish. It is gusseted to provide greater strength. I am very pleased with my purchase. The staff is friendly and helpful and provide lightning fast shipping.

by:

The chrome ball mount used with stainless Convert-A-Ball makes a good combination. I use it frequently and it stays looking nice.

by:

Great quality on flat steel bar, well polished out, and chromed. Square tube could have been deburred a little better on inside the open end. But overall everything claimed to be and more for fair price.

by:

Best hitch I could have bought! Heavy duty and beautiful. Recomend 100%

by:

Good quality form curt! Used for car dolly towing!

by:

Product was fine delivery fine. They seem to have joined in on the please review us nonsense. This is getting ridiculous!

  • Best Way to Carry Mobility Scooter with 2013 Honda CR-V
The Flint Hill Goods 30" x 50" Wheelchair Carrier w/ 48" Ramp - 2" Hitch # FHG77ZR has a usable interior platform of 48" long x 28" wide x 5" deep and will carry a wide variety of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. However, I do have some concerns on whether or not this will work for you. From what I was able to find, it appears your 2013 Honda CRV only has a tongue weight capacity of around 150-lbs; you'll want to check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm this. • 1-7/8" Hitch Ball Compatible With Curt Ball Mount C45296
Absolutely! For the Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 2-1/4" Rise, 3-1/2" Drop # C45296 the Curt 1-7/8" Hitch Ball # C40002 will fit perfectly. Keep in mind that the 1-7/8" hitch ball is only rated to 3500lbs, so even though the # C45296 is rated to 7500lbs you will need to use the lower of the two ratings.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation with 2 inch Rise with 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball
The Curt Ball Mount part # C45296 would be a great option. It has 2-1/4 inch rise, a 7,500 lb capacity and fits a 2 inch hitch. For a 2-5/16 inch ball you'd then want the part # 63847 which has a 10k capacity.

  • Ball Mount Recommendation for a 2012 Dodge Journey Towing Scoota Trailer to Tow Level
To pick out the correct rise/drop ball mount you need to measure from the bottom of the trailer coupler to the ground with the trailer perfectly level and then measure from the top of the hitch opening to the ground. The difference between those two dimension is the rise/drop you need. It sounds like you measured your correctly already but I just wanted to mention that to be sure we're on the same page. Sounds like you need a rise of right at 1-1/2 inches. The Curt aluminum ball mount...

The Curt Dual Length Ball Mount # C45230 has a 2-3/8 inch rise and is 11-1/8 inches long when using the second hitch pin hole. However, it is black not chrome. The closest chrome which we carry is the Curt # C45296 which has enough rise at 2-1/4 inches but it's only 8-1/2 inches long.
