Note: Do not power wash the Hydrastar actuator or take it through a commercial car wash. High-pressure water may damage the seals on the actuator.

The Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake actuator applies pressure to your trailer's hydraulic brake system in response to the electrical signals sent from your factory brake controller. As a result, your trailer's hydraulic brakes will be activated every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle or press the manual override on your controller.

Hydrastar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs. Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you can get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your factory brake controller, you will have more control over when and how your trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which your trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, your brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with traditional actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Hydrastar actuators are also beneficial because, unlike standard surge couplers, they allow you to activate your brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

Durable, Marine-Grade Construction

The Hydrastar Marine actuator is ideal for use on boat trailers. Just like other Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator models, this system is built of extruded anodized aluminum for superior corrosion resistance. The weathertight seals protect internal components from the elements. The Hydrastar Marine actuator also features marine-grade gaskets and stainless steel hardware that won't rust. These extra features make it perfect for marine applications.

This actuator also has a vented end plate that releases pressure, moisture, and heat to help prevent any internal damage. Unlike models that are unable to release heat and pressure, this vented actuator can be safely mounted inside of a compartment on your trailer. As a result, this actuator is great for gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers where finding space on the tongue can be nearly impossible.

  • Can You Switch The Brakes On a U-Haul Trailer Over To Electric?
Yes, it is possible to convert your U-Haul Trailer from hydraulic to electric trailer brakes. Using a kit like the Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes # HS481-8065 allows you to keep your brakes and brake lines already on your trailer. It will only then require a Coupler # DM15000-52 to replace your surge coupler. If you can send me an image of your coupler and tongue dimensions I can use that to help verify the easiest coupler you can use to replace...

  • Is a Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module Needed on a 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD
What we have found is the integrated trailer brake controllers on trucks can be very temperamental when used with electric over hydraulic brakes. I do recommend using a HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module # HBA-CAM with your factory brake controller on your 2021 GMC Sierra 3500HD. This will prevent an issue from the start or developing over time since vehicles can now receive over the air updates that could cause an issue. If you are installing the electric over...

  • Switching a 2002 Tricker Boat Trailer From Hydraulic To Electric Brakes
Replacing the coupler on your tongue is going to less complicated than you may think. Based on images I could find for your 2002 Tricker Trailer it appears the coupler surge coupler simply bolts in place. If you measure the bolt hole spread and width of your tongue I will be able to verify a coupler like the Demco # DM13203-95 can be used. As far as switching to electric brakes you can switch out the brakes and run wiring or use a kit like the Drum # HS481-8065 or Disc # HS481-8067 brake...

  • Recommended Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator For a Tandem 3,500lb Axle Boat Trailer
I recommend using either of our Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuators. We have a kit for Drum # HS481-8065 or Disc # HS481-8067 brakes. Both of these kits use plug and play connectors for the breakaway battery, trailer disconnect, and brake controller module. As your trailer likely only has a 4-way you can use the Adapter # HM47365 to make the trailer connector plug and play. If you can provide me information on your surge coupler I can help you find a replacement...

  • Is A Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Adapter Module Needed For A 2020 GMC Sierra 1500
We have found that trucks that integrated trailer brake controllers can be very temperamental when used with electric over hydraulic brakes. With that being said I recommend the Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Drum Brakes # HS481-8065 that has the CAM already included. The CAM will prevent an issue from the start or developing over time because vehicles can now receive over the air updates that cold cause issues. The 7-way plug that is included will contain...

  • Options For Converting Trailer With Hydraulic Surge Brakes To Being Controlled By a Brake Controller
I have a couple options for your 1996 Jayco camper. The easiest option will be to add either the Hydrastar Vented Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes # HS481-8067 or for Drum Brakes # HS481-8065. This will allow you to retain all your hydraulic lines, brakes and drums on your trailer. Both kits include a breakaway battery, breakaway switch and the hydraulic actuator and wiring needed to install them. You will need an Adapter # PK12716 to plug your 4-way flat into the...

  • Can Electric Brakes Be Installed and Used on a Boat Trailer While It Is Submerged in Water?
I do have a recommendation for you as electric brake assemblies should never be connected when submerged in water. Instead the best route to go would be to use an electric over hydraulic actuator such as the Hydrastar Drum # HS481-8065 or Disc # HS481-8067. These kits are specific to either drum or disc brakes and include weather tight connectors to keep out moisture. You will be able to pair these with your current hydraulic brakes, or if you can provide me with details on your current...

  • Are Electric Over Hydraulic Brakes Required To Have Trailer Brakes Work at Boat Ramp?
You will need to use electric over hydraulic brakes to back down a boat ramp and still have the brakes apply. A Surge Actuator # DM72VR will not apply the brakes since the weight of the trailer is pulling the trailer back down the hill versus pushing into the tow vehicle. I do not recommend using electric only brakes since the electromagnet for the brakes will be submerged in water when launching or retrieving your boat. You will want to add either the Hydrastar kit for Drum # HS481-8065...
