Installation of Hopkins Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Hopkins electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Usually when this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller. However, if no port is present, you will have to splice into your wiring.

With this universal adapter, you can install your Hopkins brake controller without having to wire the controller directly to your vehicle. If your vehicle has a factory tow package, just splice the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's factory brake control harness wiring, and then plug the other end of the adapter into the controller. If your vehicle doesn't have a factory tow package, you'll have to hardwire the pigtail end of the adapter into your vehicle's wiring. Because only the adapter is hardwired to your vehicle, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

If your vehicle is not equipped with a factory tow package, you will need to purchase additional equipment to ensure that the signals from your brake controller are sent to your trailer's brakes. We recommend etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

Great product fast shipping. Just what I needed to hook up my
Hopkins Agility Brake Controller to our 2013 Tahoe
I didn't get the bracket. however of course, it came with the controller.

after a year and occasional towing it handled my 18 ft car hauler with a full size 72 c10 pickup with very flat braking. ^^^^

I tow trailers with three different vehicles. These harness adapters allow me to switch brake controller from vehicle to vehicle. Much cheaper than having three controllers. I use velcro to hold them in place.

Installed the Hopkins InSight brake controller in a 2015 Wrangler Unlimited. Installation was straightforward with no problems. The biggest plus with this unit is the ability to mount the "brain" out of sight and mount the display and the manual control in separate, convenient locations. Very nice. Also ordered a 20A breaker, extra wire and an extra harness connector (for another vehicle). All items arrived on time and well packaged. etrailer gets a big thumbs up!

Easy hookup to my 2013 Suburban. Instructions and install video were spot on. Took me less than 1/2 hour and Brake Controller was working as it should.

by:

It was right on the money the right length from any location you put it. and the most important the tutorial video makes the installation as simple as it can be.

by:

Called and talked to a technician who gave me the part number I needed. It arrived promptly and worked perfect with my brake control.

by:

This company was a great source for locating a large and specialized inventory of trailer items. I was never disappointed in the prompt and professional service they provide. Thanks again.

  • How To Wire Brake Controller To Wires Under Dash That Are Cut On 2004 Dodge Ram Factory Tow Package
The information that I have indicates that for the 4 wires under your dash, there should be a red-and-tan wire, a green wire, white-and-red wire, and a black wire. You will need to connect the red-and-tan wire to the Black wire of the brake controller. You will connect the green wire to the Blue wire of the brake controller. The white-and-red wire will connect to the Red wire of the brake controller. The black wire will connect to the White wire of the brake controller. To connect the...

  • Parts Needed To Add Trailer Brake Controller To 2008 Jeep Liberty
I would be happy to recommend everything you will need to install the Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller # HM47294 in your 2008 Jeep Liberty, but your vehicle does not have a factory trailer brake controller port so you will need to hardwire the controller to the vehicle using universal wiring adapter # HM47685. If your Jeep has a factory 7-way connector you will have a blue wire underneath the dash that goes to the brake output pin on the 7-way connector. You will need the # 5506...

  • Installing A Brake Controller In 2013 Chevy Silverado
On your 2013 Chevy Silverado, no plug is present under the dash, but the needed wires are already run. You will connect the brake controller wiring with the vehicle wiring already present under the dash. To attach your Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller - Plug In - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # HM47294, you will simply hardwire the pigtail. I recommend using the Universal Wiring Adapter for Hopkins Trailer Brake Controllers # HM47685 to give you the quick connects and keep you from...

  • Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Electric Brakes Using a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee
How's your 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped now? If it doesn't have any type of trailer wiring already then the best thing to do is to add a 4-way connector and convert it to a 7-way. Reason being is that the 4-way, like part #HM11142555, is easy to install because it plugs in behind each tail light. No splicing at all. Then use our # ETBC7 kit to convert that 4-way to the 7-way. The kit plugs into the 4-way you already installed for the lighting functions and then you run the 12-volt...

  • Where To Connect Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller Brake Signal Wire On 2015 GMC Terrain
The red brake signal wire on the Universal Wiring Adapter # HM47685 for the Hopkins Agility Trailer Brake Controller # HM47294 will need to be installed to the cold side of your brake switch on your 2015 GMC Terrain. When we installed a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 on a 2017 Terrain, we found that the correct wire was the white wire in the number 8 pin of the black connector on the BCM using a quick splice included with the harness which you can see at the 12:05 minute mark in the included...

  • Wiring Harness to Install Hopkins Impulse Brake Controller in a 2018 Toyota 4Runner w/Tow Package
I did some checking and the 2018 Toyota 4Runner uses the same brake controller wiring harness as the previous 2 model years. That means you can use # HM47815 with your Impulse brake controller. But, I actually recommend a different approach because the factory ground on the Toyota tow packages where a brake controller plugs in has proven to be insufficient for many brake controllers. I propose using harness # 3041-P which has a separate ground wire to combat that issue. You would have...

What you can do is use the Agility, # HM47294, and then use either the adapter you referenced, # HM47795, or use the second vehicle mounting kit, # HM47685. The second vehicle kit is a little more cost effective and you will not need to cut off a connector. Either way will work and you can unplug the brake controller when you want to.

  • Installing a Brake Controller on a 1998 Chevrolet Z71 with Factory Tow Package
GM did not include a plug-in style brake controller connection until the Silverado came out in 1999, so I doubt your 1998 Z71 has a brake controller port. Prior to 1999 brake controllers had to be hardwired to GM trucks and SUVs. Since you already have the tow package, you would just need the brake controller, the universal wiring adapter and our brake controller wiring kit # 5506. If you are interested in the Hopkins Agility brake controller, # HM47294, then you would want the Hopkins...

Yes, there is a plug under the dash on a 2017 Ford F-53 Chassis.
