Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer with Electric Brakes Using a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Question:

Hey There! I have a 2009 jeep grand cherokee that I would like to use when towing my 2003 Viking Saga pop up trailer which has electric brakes and a 7 pin connector with six wires going to it. I have no reverse lights on the trailer. What do I need to wire up the Jeep so that I could have a brake controller and the rest of the other mandated lights?

How's your 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped now? If it doesn't have any type of trailer wiring already then the best thing to do is to add a 4-way connector and convert it to a 7-way. Reason being is that the 4-way, like part #HM11142555, is easy to install because it plugs in behind each tail light. No splicing at all. Then use our # ETBC7 kit to convert that 4-way to the 7-way. The kit plugs into the 4-way you already installed for the lighting functions and then you run the 12-volt wire the Jeep's battery and run the blue wire into the cab for the brake controller. Everything you need is included with the kit except the controller itself. The 7-way has a wire for the reverse lights but you can cap it off since your trailer won't use it anyway.

If the Jeep already has a 4-way then you just need the # ETBC7 kit and install it the same way.

Then for the controller I recommend the Hopkins Agility, part # HM47294, along with the wiring harness # HM47685.

If the Jeep doesn't already have a hitch I like the Curt # 13251 for it.
