Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Junction BoxBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2002 Chevrolet Silverado

The hitch and controller was installed on a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. It took roughly 15 min to install the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, plug it in and program it. As far as the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch, I cut the hole in the bed and cut the heat shield out the day before while I was waiting for the hitch to arrive. The next day my parts arrived, I laid out all the parts to make sure everything was there and then started the install. I didn't want to cut the 1"x1/2" notch out of my fender well to get the angle iron in so I spent about 15 min. trying to get it up on top the frame from underneath the truck. A waste of time. Do like the instructions say, cut the notch and slide it straight across the top of the frame. It will save time and aggravation. After getting both braces in place I ran a piece of rope down thru the hole and pulled the hitch plate up into place and tied it off. I installed all the bolts finger tight, put the side plates on and tightened everything up. It looks nice and I saved myself a $435.00 installation fee. With out a lift and without taking my rear tires off it took about 3 1/2 hrs. to install by myself. The only thing I want to say to B&W is don't place the heavy metal hitch parts on the booklet with the packets of Lithium Grease in it, they bust as the picture shows. Last but not least, thank you Sherry for all your help with my order and getting it to me quick in such short notice. I really appreciated it.

Great, and no problems

by:

The quality of the adapter and customer service was very good. However, I must have ordered the wrong adapter as this on had an inline 4 plug and my controller had a square plug.

2001 Chevrolet Silverado

Got this for my 2001 Silverado 3500. You can’t ask for anything more simple and self explanatory. Good quality harness. Been in the truck for a year now with no issues at all

by:

The Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter fit my 99 Silverado 1500 with not any issues at the fuse block. The length of the wire harness allowed me to install the brake controller in the CD storage for easy access and use.

by:

A customer service Representative by the name of Rob checked into my order when it did not show up on the estimated date then called me when it got here to let me know it was delivered. Great courteous service and the components worked and installed in a breeze.

by:

Because my truck has the factory tow option, I was able to purchase this custom harness from etrailer for a very quick install. No wires to trace…. No splices…. Very simple. One end of the harness plugged in to a socket under the dash of my truck. The other end of the harness plugged into a socket on the back of the Teconsha P3. Wiring complete!!

by:

Was delivered earlier than anticipated. Had to move one wire to make it compatible with my year truck but not a big deal. Highly recommend Etrailer.com for all your trailer needs.

by:

This made the installation very easy, it was plug and play with this.

by:

Perfect fit on my 2004 GMC SIERRA 1500. Works great and shipping was FAST!

2002 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased an electric brake controller to install on my 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1 ton. I am pretty tech savvy but the thought of wiring into my truck’s electrical system made me a little apprehensive. The thought of my trailer passing me on the road was very thought provoking. Then along comes the “Plug-in” adapter for the brake controller. A no-brainer. Plug into the controller, plug into truck fuse panel (in a specific marked location for the plug), and your ready to go. As I said, a no-brainer

by:

Quality part. Just plug it in and go. No problems yet.

by:

Replacement for another brake controller.
Easy
install. The new cable got rid of excess from previous install.
Both work great and it made a much neater job. As you can see, you can't even tell where the cable comes out of the fuse box!!

by:

Great product and it is exactly as it is described. I have a 15000lb fifth wheel and I need to be able to control it! I am positive that I bought the right product for that task. Stuyvesant, NY

by:

Did not work. The trailer brakes only work if I use the manual application. They are not working if you just use the truck brake petal.

It doesn't get any simpler than this! Called etrailer and told them what vehicles I had. Sara looked it up and three days later I had the parts. Took all of 10 minutes to install and then I went to pick up my new camper. Product worked just perfect. Great company!

2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Great service and delivery as always! Driving a 2002 Suburban pulling a 1996 trailer, it's always a challenge to find compatible parts but never at etrailer!

by:

Fast shipping and very easy install with the additional wiring harness. Will buy again

by:

The Help & professionalism of Quinn F at etrailer was outstanding. He confirmed that the product was the best choice for my vehicle & purpose, his personal response & follow through impressed me (including an e-mail letting me know my parts were delivered a couple days early). I will definitely be using Quinn F at etrailerfor all my RV related needs.

by:

Worked perfectly.

by:

etrailer.com had the items we needed at a reasonable price. The items shipped out quickly but unfortunately, got held up in USPS shipping. I emailed customer service about the delay; they responded promptly and to our great satisfaction. I believe etrailer.com takes customer service seriously which is rare in today's time. We will definitely visit etrailer.com again for our needs and highly recommend them to anyone.

  • No Trailer Brakes After Brake Controller Install on a 2000 GMC Sierra
It sounds like you are trying to install a brake controller on your 2000 GMC Sierra. If that is the case then there is actually a plug in adapter available like the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3025-P depending on what brake controller you have. If this is what you are using and you have a factory 7-way then the likely cause of your problem is a blown CHMSL fuse. If the trailer brakes works with the manual override but not with the brake pedal then...

  • Troubleshooting Open Ground Error Code for Brake Controller Install
The "open ground" error code of a brake controller indicates that the controller is losing the ground connection to the vehicle battery which is the white wire. I'd double check you have the # 3025-P seated totally in the junction box as well as make sure there's not damage to the connector or the pins of it. Also check for corrosion and fix as needed. As far as tracking down the ground circuit on the truck wiring that might be challenging. An easier solution would be to run a jumper wire...

  • Screen on Prodigy Brake Controller Goes Blank When Braking a 2002 Chevy Suburban
A blank display when engaging the manual or vehicle brake usually indicates that you are losing power on either the power or ground wire for the brake controller. Did you use the # 3025-P plug-in brake control wiring adapter when you installed the unit on your 2002 Suburban? If so, I would first make sure the connections are firmly seated--push together until you hear the click. You can also check the wire itself to make sure there are no pinched or exposed points that might be touching...

If it is not in this location it will need to be moved there. To determine if it is the harness that is causing the problem you can disconnect it and see if the problem goes away. If it does then there is a problem with the harness or the controller and one or both would need...

What is the year, make, and model of the vehicle? The red brake controller wire should only be getting power when you step on the brake pedal. If you are not getting any power on that wire with the brake pedal depressed then you may have it attached to the wrong brake switch wire (if it is hardwired into the vehicle), the red wire is in the wrong location in the plug (if it is a plug in application) or you have a blown stop light or CHMSL fuse. I would need to know the year, make, and...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller Installation in 2001 Chevrolet Silverado
A common cause for a trailer brake circuit to activate at full power is a corrosion issue in the vehicle 7-way socket and/or the trailer plug. Corrosion can build-up inside a connector or on its contacts. When this happens two separate circuits, like the brake circuit and the 12V trailer power circuit, can become bridged together.
