Video Transcript for Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with Coiled Cable Review

Speaker 1: Today you're going to get a good look at and we're going to show you how to install the Fastway Zip Trailer Break Away Switch with coiled cable. It's available in four foot long with part number FA80-00-2040 and in six foot with part number FA80-00-2060. This is a great replacement for your trailer's old break away device. In case of a catastrophic event where you may become uncoupled or disconnected from your trailer, this switch will activate, locking your brakes, bringing your trailer to a slowing halt. The cable is coiled to prevent it from dragging on the ground. It doesn't look thick, but it's actually a high strength woven steel, so it's going to be durable and last for a long time. The vehicle end features a carabiner so it's easy to connect to your safety chain loops. Here at my camper, you can see my old break away switch is junk.

It's just hanging there. We're going to replace it with the Fastway Break away switch. Yours may remove differently, I'm just going to unbolt mine and cut my wires. Now, on this trailer, the wires are run through some loom. I'm just going to reveal them and then cut them where I want to splice into them.

Now I can remove and discard my old break away switch. Now you can set your break away switch in place where you want it. You want to be sure you have enough room to connect your break away to your vehicle. To get it mounted, you'll have to provide your own hardware. We recommend using a self-tapping screw.I've gone ahead and routed my wires through the wire loom material, back to where I cut my wires. If you don't have any loom material and would like some to protect your wires, you can pick some up here at etrailer.com with part number 459075-1, and that's sold by the foot.

Here where my wires meet, as you can see, I've got some excess. I'm going to trim some off. I'm going to be using some butt connectors, so we'll want to be sure and allow for that. Now I'm going to strip back all four of my wires with some wire strippers and I'm going to go back about a quarter of an inch. We'll be using heat-shrink butt connectors. These are not included, but you can pick some up at etrailer.com with part number DW05744-5.

Now since it's a switch, it doesn't matter positive or negative, we can connect either wire to either wire. So we'll first take our heat-shrink butt connector and make sure that that's all the way inside, then I'm going to crimp it. And I'll take one of my other wires and do the same thing. Then I can repeat the same process with my other wire. The reason we're using heat-shrink butt connectors is because we're on the outside of the trailer and we don't want any moisture to get inside. Let's go ahead and shrink those down. We're using a heat gun to do so. Now we'll tuck our wires back into our loom. If you want, you can use some electrical tape.To test it out, you can support one of your axles with a jack stand, then you can get your wheel spinning real good and then have somebody pull out the switch. Go ahead. If it locks up, it works correctly. And now you've had a good look at, and you know how to install, the Fastway Zip Trailer Break Away Switch with coiled cable.

This is a huge upgrade from my normal cable. Because it takes up slack and stays safely out of getting caught somewhere
Love it !

by:

Awesome product I don't need too worry about the cable dragging on the ground anymore

by:

easy to use - love it!

by:

Item shipped in a timely manner, good quality and works as described.

This solved the problem of the breakaway break cable getting caught and pulling away and signal the breaks to go on.
Easy to install. .. the length of the coiled cable is perfect to reach the bed of the truck where we hook it to a ring.

Very easy to install and much better than the stock super long cable. I have to imagine this will work much better than the long straight cable that was looped through the chains. Totally happy with the product.

Its still going strong and has been much nicer than the straight cable. I would definitely buy this again.

I needed to replace my breakaway cable and battery on my horse trailer. Etrailer has the parts and The best thing was how fast I received it! I didn’t want to use my trailer until everything was back in working order. Etrailer’s fast delivery has me up and running in no time!

by:

Easy to install. Works like it should.

by:

Purchased this breakaway switch to replace a bad one on my gooseneck trailer. Product is much better quality than the factory switch I replaced and was very easy to install. Hope to never have to use it for its intended purpose, but it tests good every time I connect my trailer and pull the pin to check for proper operation. The coiled lanyard cable is a really good feature and assured that the cable does not get tangled in other components and possibly activating the brakes.

by:

This break away switch is well built, easy to test. I should have bought 2, I need one for my other trailer. No more finger pricks with the cable, The plastic coating and the coiled cable should help and keep it out of the way and protected.

by:

I was pleased that my order got to my home before arrival date happy about that, when I had my brakeaway switch installed it started to get really hot and it started to melt ,I belive it was a defective part didn't want to make a big fuss over this it was on 25 dollars nothing was wrong with original switch just wanted a cable thar didn't hang on ground, I bought plenty of stuff from etrailer and always been pleased but not in this case what should I do? Thank you

by:

It's super-handy to have the coiled cable, although I had to replace the carabiner with something smaller. The cable is rather long and I have to loop it back and attach it to the coupler latch. I do love the cable not getting in the way of anything.

by:

Good price. fast delivery

Working fine after a year post install.

by:

My existing breakaway switch mount rusted and fell off. I picked the Fastway switch mainly because of the coiled cable. This should work better than the regular straight cable. I don't have to worry about it getting tangle up.

by:

I received my breakaway switch on time but haven't installed it as of yet. Every order I've received has been great and comes with easy instructions.
Thanks Adam E.

by:

Been on the trailer for a year. Luckily I've never needed it, but it's showing no external wear. Cable and clip are still like new and the mount is solid.

by:

Preorder service was excellent. Questions were answered and product was delivered as promised. Breakaway switch was of good quality and staff was very helpful in selecting the right product.

by:

Great direct replacement breakaway switch with easy installation.
Fast shipment and competitive pricing from etrailer makes this an
even more obvious choice.

by:

etrailer products are outstanding quality and at a very fair price. Best of all their order tracking is by far the best of any retailer I have delt with. Keep up the outstanding service.

by:

This product is as described, I liked it because it has the ability to swivel back under the bumper when not in use and it came with everything I needed to wire and connect a breakaway switch.

by:

I like these breakaway switch and coiled cord combos, our cables end up cut off a lot of times. When we change out switches I always update them with this combo

by:

etrailer.com had everything I needed to complete my trailer build, and at the right prices. The products are quality, with competitive pricing. etrailer.com delivered as promised, it was our local delivery that delayed sending the product out to my home, but one call to Pat, and the issue was immediately resolved, and I had the product that night! Great product, Great customer service!

by:

Product arrived with in a couple of days after ordering. It is just what I needed for my Dump trailer E switch replacement.

by:

Looks like a very good product. However, I like the ability to disconnect the spring cord at the unit when it’s not in use. This cord is permanently affixed. I can modify it, but would prefer not to have to.

by:

Fast ship! Thanks. Fits my Roadmaster rig.

  • Should a 2005 Flagstaff 206 LTD Popup Camper Have a Breakaway Kit?
Due to the light weight of the 2005 Flagstaff 206LTD you may not have any trailer brakes, and then would not need any type of breakaway. If your camper does have electric brakes you should have a Breakaway Switch # FA80-00-2040 to activate the trailer brakes in the event the trailer does come disconnected from your tow vehicle. If you do not have trailer brakes understand the 7-way was added as a charge line to maintain the battery on your camper while traveling.

  • Can Breakaway Switch By Itself Be Used If Trailer Already Had Battery
If you have a battery already on your trailer that's getting a charge and would be adequate to hold the brakes of your trailer in the event of a breakaway you could wire just a switch from it to your brake output circuit, and you'd be fine. For that you'd only need a switch like the # FA80-00-2040 for a kit with a coiled cable or part # 3802348 for a kit with a straight cable. The battery setups like the part # 20099 would only be needed if you also needed a battery to power the system.

  • Replacement Brake Away Cable For Frayed Trailer Breakaway Cable
You can trim your current Breakaway Cable # HM20012 and fasten a new loop as long as you ensure it is long enough to not activate the brakes when you are turning your trailer. You will need to ensure that the repair is strong enough and that the remaining portion of the cable is still in good condition. I recommend replacing the cable with either the Fastway Zip Coiled Trailer Breakaway Cable # FA80-01-2140 or replacing the entire switch with the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes Being Locked Up With 7-Way Disconnected From Tow Vehicle
It sounds like you have an issue with your Breakaway Kit # 20099. This is where the power is coming from to lock your trailer brakes when it is not connected to your vehicle 7-way. You will want to check to ensure the disconnect is fully seated and the wiring for it is not damaged. We do have a Replacement Switch # FA80-00-2040 if your switch is allowing power to flow through the switch with the plug in place.

  • Trailer Brake Breakaway Switch & Cable
Since your travel trailer has onboard house batteries, the break away brake will be powered by those. To replace the breakaway switch and/or cable I recommend the Fastway # FA80-00-2040 which includes the tongue mounted switch. If you have the switch and only need the lanyard I recommend the Fastway # FA80-01-2204. I have this same line attached to my travel trailer. I like that the coiled line keeps it away from the ground and the large carabiener clip makes it each to hook on to the...

  • Replacement Trailer Breakaway Switch and Cable Recommendation for 4 Foot Breakaway Cable
The Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch # FA80-00-2040 that you referenced has a 4 foot long cable. The breakaway cable should be longer than the safety chains according to RVIA Recreational Vehicle Industry Association. This will activate the brakes in the event you lose the trailer connection and the safety chains fail.

  • Should a Breakaway Pin Be Able To Be Pulled By Hand
It sounds like you are saying that the breakaway pin is stuck inside the switch. If that is the case then yes, you should be able to pull this by hand though they do take a bit of force to remove but it sounds like you may be exceeding that. If the pin will not come out then it may be stuck or someone may have tried to install the wrong pin into the switch. If that is the case then it would be best to replace the two as this is not really a component that you want to leave up to chance...

  • Replacement Breakaway Switch for SMI Stay-IN-Play Towed Car Braking System SM99251
If you needed only the Switch Pin for your SMI Stay-IN-Play Duo supplemental braking system # SM99251 you could use part # SM99905. But for a complete replacement breakaway switch you can use any of the kits we offer, shown on the linked page. Since these all function the same way they are not brand- or system-specific. Examples of suitable items are # HM20014 and # FA80-00-2040. These and all others are shown on the linked page.

  • Is There a Replacement Pin for Bright Way Group Model 2384 Breakaway Switch
I do have an option for you but I wasn't able to reference a Bright Way Group Model 2384 Breakaway Switch/Pin. Therefore, in order to ensure compatibility you'll want to replace both the switch and pin using one like the Replacement Breakaway Switch for Bright Way Trailer Breakaway Kits part # 3802348 which would be a very easy replacement as there are only two wires and a single mounting hole for the switch. If you want to change styles, I recommend the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes Locking Up Without Applying Vehicle Brakes
The brakes on your new RV trailer can be activated either by the brake controller or the trailer's own on-board emergency breakaway system. I have not heard of an issue with the Echo # C51180 before now, and while it is possible the unit has an internal malfunction I suspect the problem is more likely to be in either the trailer's breakaway system or within the 7-way wiring on the Audi or the trailer. For the trailer brakes to lock up without you pressing the brake pedal they would need...

  • Troubleshoot/Repair Damaged Trailer Break Away Braking System
It looks like the interior of the switch was damaged. It's not a big deal assuming it's an electric breakaway system. You can just replace the switch assembly very affordably. The switches use two wires to connect, so they're not system specific. I like the switches offered by Fastway that use a coiled cable that won't drag and feature a carabiner that makes it simple to attach to the tow vehicle. The switches are available with a 4 foot cable as part # FA80-00-2040 or a 6 foot cable as...

  • Trailer Breakaway Switch Compatible With 12-Volt RV Battery
Yes, the Trailer Breakaway Switch # 420000 can be wired to the 12 volt RV battery on your trailer as long as the battery has a charge line to maintain its power while you are towing. I prefer to use the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with Coiled Cable in 4' # FA80-00-2040 or 6' # FA80-00-2060 since there is less chance of the coiled cable becoming damaged. I have included the wiring diagram from Fastway that shows how the breakaway switch is wired to your RV battery.

  • What Separate Power Source Needed For Breakaway Switch
It looks like you have everything wired right so if everything is working then you are good to go on wiring. With regards to the power source, most states require a separate and dedicated power/battery source for your breakaway system so the 12V pole on your junction box will not work. If you want an entire breakaway kit that includes a breakaway switch, I recommend the Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit, Item # 20099. You can use either a 4 foot cable like # FA80-01-2140 or a 6 foot cable like # FA80-01-2160. Either will work well on a 5th wheel trailer. Where you mount the breakaway on the trailer will dictate the best location for you to allow trailer turning and also a quick engagement if your trailer were to breakaway from your tow vehicle. If you don't have the entire assembly, you can use # FA80-00-2040 for the 4 foot cable or # FA80-00-2060 for the 6 foot cable. I've attached an article...
