Video Transcript for Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with Coiled Cable Review

Speaker 1: Today you're going to get a good look at and we're going to show you how to install the Fastway Zip Trailer Break Away Switch with coiled cable. It's available in four foot long with part number FA80-00-2040 and in six foot with part number FA80-00-2060. This is a great replacement for your trailer's old break away device. In case of a catastrophic event where you may become uncoupled or disconnected from your trailer, this switch will activate, locking your brakes, bringing your trailer to a slowing halt. The cable is coiled to prevent it from dragging on the ground. It doesn't look thick, but it's actually a high strength woven steel, so it's going to be durable and last for a long time. The vehicle end features a carabiner so it's easy to connect to your safety chain loops. Here at my camper, you can see my old break away switch is junk.

It's just hanging there. We're going to replace it with the Fastway Break away switch. Yours may remove differently, I'm just going to unbolt mine and cut my wires. Now, on this trailer, the wires are run through some loom. I'm just going to reveal them and then cut them where I want to splice into them.

Now I can remove and discard my old break away switch. Now you can set your break away switch in place where you want it. You want to be sure you have enough room to connect your break away to your vehicle. To get it mounted, you'll have to provide your own hardware. We recommend using a self-tapping screw.I've gone ahead and routed my wires through the wire loom material, back to where I cut my wires. If you don't have any loom material and would like some to protect your wires, you can pick some up here at etrailer.com with part number 459075-1, and that's sold by the foot.

Here where my wires meet, as you can see, I've got some excess. I'm going to trim some off. I'm going to be using some butt connectors, so we'll want to be sure and allow for that. Now I'm going to strip back all four of my wires with some wire strippers and I'm going to go back about a quarter of an inch. We'll be using heat-shrink butt connectors. These are not included, but you can pick some up at etrailer.com with part number DW05744-5.

Now since it's a switch, it doesn't matter positive or negative, we can connect either wire to either wire. So we'll first take our heat-shrink butt connector and make sure that that's all the way inside, then I'm going to crimp it. And I'll take one of my other wires and do the same thing. Then I can repeat the same process with my other wire. The reason we're using heat-shrink butt connectors is because we're on the outside of the trailer and we don't want any moisture to get inside. Let's go ahead and shrink those down. We're using a heat gun to do so. Now we'll tuck our wires back into our loom. If you want, you can use some electrical tape.To test it out, you can support one of your axles with a jack stand, then you can get your wheel spinning real good and then have somebody pull out the switch. Go ahead. If it locks up, it works correctly. And now you've had a good look at, and you know how to install, the Fastway Zip Trailer Break Away Switch with coiled cable.

Replaced original breakaway switch and cord with this one. Took about 10 minutes to wire up and install.

by:

The new breakaway switch works great.

by:

Not installed yet but looks to be a quality piece. Should do exactly what was promised.

by:

Neat and easy to install. Fortunately I have not encountered a breakaway.

by:

The coiled cable makes the breakaway switch easy to attach quickly without having to figure out what to do with the extra cable that often drags on the ground. Much better design.

by:

Just what we needed.

by:

One year later, still in service. Excellent replacement when my drivers break one.

by:

Etrailer had the best price on this switch and cable. I like the coiled cable. It is neat and stays up out of the way. I had my old steel cable catch the hitch and pull the pin on the breakaway switch. This cable should eliminate that problem. My only complaint is I paid extra for 3 day shipping. It took four. Wouldn't have been a big deal normally but I was waiting on it to leave on a trip.

This switch and cable has been trouble free.

by:

Everything arrived in perfect condition. The Barman 92 series replacement lens was a perfect fit for the light on our 1999 Coleman camper.

The Fastway Breakaway switch with it's coiled cable is a welcome relief from the switch on the camper now. I haven't installed the hand held shower unit, but it looks as though it will fit perfectly. My only very small issue was in boxing the items. Packing the box a little tighter maybe would have prevented the slight damage to the box.
I would definitely recommend and use etrailer.com in the future.

by:

I have received the new breakaway switch and it looks great. Unfortunately I will have to wait to install it as the trailer currently has approx 4 foot of snow on it and it's "out back" meaning I have a couple hundred feet of 4-5' high snow to go through to get to it. In addition we are in the midst of a deep freeze. Current temp is minus 7 degrees! I will install the unit most likely in late March or even April

by:

Installed easily enough and hope to never find out if it works in real life. The switch does function as designed.

A year in and I have not had a breakaway but, it is still attached to the trailer and used every time I hook up. Perfect in my opinion.

by:

Not much to review here. Product looks as shown, works as expected.
Just a simple breakaway switch. Haven't had an issue with it in the year
that I've had it. Price very reasonable, delivery reasonable as well, and
within an expected time frame.

by:

Super fast shipping!

by:

Easy istall and better yet, it works.

by:

Great quality at an affordable price. Plenty of wire to meet any configuration/setup.

by:

The sping coiled wire was the perfect addition as it keeps it out of the way when the trailer is stored and can reach the different connection points on my truck and motorhome.

Thanks etrailer!

by:

Well made product that arrived in a timely manner.

by:

I installed all the products that were purchased from etrailer.com with the assistance of the videos. It was helpful and it saved me from having to pay someone to do the work for me.

etrailer.com is a great website to purchase all one's needs for towing equipment.

Thank You

by:

This coiled cable and caribeaner is a great idea and item. The breakaway coiled cable keeps it up and out of the way. Looks and function are much better.

by:

ANOTHER EASY INSTALL. GOOD QUALITY CABLE THAT DOESNT RUST OUT AS OF YET (1 YEAR LATER) I CANT TELL YOU HOW GOOD IT WORKS BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO FIND OUT HONESTLY.

by:

The breakaway switch looks very well made. Did not have chance to install it or try it yet.

by:

This was purchased as a replacement for the original which had seized up. The coiled cable is excellent. The original required taped up coils in the cable to prevent dragging.

by:

The cable faded in the sun. Otherwise, the break away plug has performed well.

by:

  • Recommended Trailer Brakes Breakaway Switch For Travel Trailer With Coach Batteries Powering Switch
I recommend the Fastway Zip Trailer Breakaway Switch with Coiled Cable # FA80-00-2060 for your travel trailer. The coiled cable is less likely to become damaged or caught up in any road debris while driving. Your onboard batteries can be used to power your breakaway since they will be wired into the vehicle charge line and have more than enough power to activate the trailer brakes. I have linked an installation video below to show you how it needs to be installed. Keeping an extra Cable...

  • Replacing the Breakaway Brakes Pin When It Becomes Disconnected From The Breakaway Switch
Replacing just the plunger portion of the Breakaway Switch # HM20010 is simple if you still have the plunger end. The plunger will simply reinsert into the switch, you may need to move the trailer to get the brakes to fully disengage as they will likely be held into place on the drums. If you do not have the plunger it can be difficult to find depending on which one you have. First you will want to locate the box itself to see which manufacturer you have. This box is mounted to either...

We have the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-173-16UC3 to get you a 4 on 4 mounting pattern. You will need to disassemble one of your hubs to verify it will fit the new hub as your axle is produced before they maintained records for their axles. • Recommended Fastway Coiled Cable Breakaway Cable for 5th Wheel Trailer
You can use either a 4 foot cable like # FA80-01-2140 or a 6 foot cable like # FA80-01-2160. Either will work well on a 5th wheel trailer. Where you mount the breakaway on the trailer will dictate the best location for you to allow trailer turning and also a quick engagement if your trailer were to breakaway from your tow vehicle. If you don't have the entire assembly, you can use # FA80-00-2040 for the 4 foot cable or # FA80-00-2060 for the 6 foot cable. I've attached an article...

  • Compatability with Brake Buddy Classic Braking System
A breakaway switch is a very basic device so you can use switch # FA80-00-2060 with your braking system. • Are Brakes Damaged After Driving 40 Miles With Breakaway Pin Pulled on 2022 NuCamp TaG TT
If the trailer brakes activated when the pin was pulled on your breakaway you would have noticed. You would have heard the trailer dragging, felt it while towing, or seen the smoke coming off of the tires as you dragged it along. More than likely the battery on your breakaway was dead and needs to be charged so the brakes never engaged. This means your trailer brakes should be fine. However, you may need to replace the cable on your breakaway if you were dragging the old one along while...

As for your other question, there is not an initial surge, the rating is 4 amps per brake magnet for 10 inch electric brakes.

Hey Carmen, Nope, the brand does not matter at all when replacing your trailer's breakaway switch with a new one. • Can The Trailer Breakaway Switch Mount To Larger Battery On Tilt Trailer?
Yes, you can connect your Breakaway Switch # FA80-00-2060 to a larger battery than a standard 5Ah # 3801250 or 10Ah # BRW87FR breakaway batteries. This is the way most campers operate since they are going to have a larger battery to operate lights on the trailer as well. You must make sure you have a charge line going to the battery from your vehicle to maintain the battery charge while you drive. For that size of battery it would be recommended to use a Redarc Battery Charger # RED96FR...

It looks like the interior of the switch was damaged. It's not a big deal assuming it's an electric breakaway system. You can just replace the switch assembly very affordably. The switches use two wires to connect, so they're not system specific. I like the switches offered by Fastway that use a coiled cable that won't drag and feature a carabiner that makes it simple to attach to the tow vehicle. I have included the wiring diagram from Fastway that shows how the breakaway switch is wired to your RV battery.
