Video Transcript for Redline Trailer Brakes BP01-180 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter, Alko, and Hayes 12" electric trailer brakes, this part includes everything shown here on the table, the magnet itself, the spring, and the clip to hold the magnet into place. This magnet kit will allow you to replace the worn-out magnet on your 12" trailer brakes, and because you're replacing just the magnet, not the whole assembly, it will save you time and money. This part is designed to work with the following brake assemblies, it'll work with the Dexter 12" x 2" on a 6000 pound axle, the Alko 12" x 2" on the 6000 and 700 pounds axles, the after-1988, and the Hayes 12" x 2" 600 and 7000 pound axles after 1988. If you notice, the magnet is an oval design, and they do that to increase the efficiency of the magnet, and to also extend the life of the magnet. Just to give you an idea of the size on this, the width of it you can see is about 3 1/8", and the height going to be right at about 2". You also notice, when the wires come out of the magnet, they have a section of a protective sleeve over that, and the reason they do that is because, when this is installed in your brake assembly, that initial part of the wire is what goes through the backing plate, so you don't want the wires rubbing up against the backing plate and causing problems, so they put this nice, protective sleeve on here to protect the wires from getting damaged. Also, if you notice, it has the two wires, two black wires coming out of it. It doesn't matter which wire from the magnet is attached to the power or the ground, you just want to make sure that one of the wires is properly grounded, and then the other wire will be attached to your electric brake output circuit from your trailer connector.

That should do it for the review of the replacement trailer brake magnet for the Dexter, Alko, and Hayes 12" electric trailer brakes.

Everything I needed to replace the old brake magnets.

by:

My trailer is very old. It is home built and the brake plates were welded on the axles and I had to turn the axles around to get the brake actuators to function in the proper manner. While I was working on it, I realized the magnets needed replacing, but the originals were of a brand I couldn't find. I managed to measure the old parts and found the correct replacement on etrailer.com at less then half the price a local trailer shop wanted for a similar part. The magnets were exactly the right part, they arrived a day sooner then I expected and the brakes are back together and functioning as advertised. Now if it would stop raining I could get the axles back under the trailer and get the brakes wired up again. I'm not complaining about the rain, and certainly am happy about the parts and quick service.

Thanks for checking back with me as I had completely forgotten the trailer brake issues I had last year. The brakes are still functioning fine and we are now using that trailer to haul logs and equipment on a regular basis with absolutely no problems with the brakes. I wish I had reworked them earlier and would recommend the parts I used to anyone with a similar issue.

by:

I'll give a #4 for now, they were slow getting here and I only have one installed right now ! The real test is when I haul my 40' trailer down the road for a few thousand miles, then I will know how well they work.

They are doing exactly what they were designed to do !

by:

What I needed and got to me in time ! Easy to install. Also e-trailer has a slug of instructional videos. My brakes were sorely out of adjustment. A couple minutes reviewing the video and a few more adjusting the brakes and I'm a happy camper.

My order was correct and shipped promptly at a very reasonable shipping cost. Very satisfied with the service, I give it 5 stars

by:

Installation was easy and best of all they work! Many thanks to the Technical Support Team for helping me find the ones that match the trailer and troubleshoot that darn "beeping" noise coming from my truck brake controller.

by:

Had one ready to replace this spring - the wire on the old one had gotten caught in the brake mechanism. Glad I ordered the kit.

by:

Works just fine. Takes about the same effort as replacing the whole brake unit. But is cheaper. If caught early enough, you only need the clip inside.

by:

Very fast shipping, well packaged and a direct replacement for my worn magnets. Etrailer makes it easy to get the right part for my old 5th wheel.

by:

I thought had an issue with my wiring and after doing a little research I figured out it was more than likely due to worn magnets. I was able to locate the correct type, order, and replace the magnets fixing my problem! I saved money by installing them myself!

by:

All products bought are working perfectly. These parts are good quality for the money. And more importantly, E trailer's customer service is why I only buy my trailer parts from them.

by:

Product fairly priced, correct product shipped with the cost of shipping reasonable. Very satisfied.

by:

part was direct fit replacement, easy install works like the other 3 wheels.

by:

Magnet replaced an ALKO magnet. Same quality and design.

by:

awesome service and fast shipping. Thank You Bunches!!

Ordered genuine Dexter part and got another brand

by:

Promptly shipped and it was the correct part.. Thanks E-Trailer, you never let me down..

by:

Excellent replacement.

  • Replacement Brake Magnet Needed for a Hayes M144 or AL-KO K568111 Brake Magnet
For your 12" x 2" brake drum you can use either our part # AKBRKR-M12 or the Redline # BP01-180 to replace the brake magnet on your Hayes/Al-KO brake assembly. Both magnets have 2 wires coming from them and it doesn't matter which wire is connected to which function. I have linked some review videos for you to check out.

  • Are Trailer Brakes Always On or Off When Not Connected to a Tow Vehicle
Unless something is putting voltage on the brake output circuit of the trailer wiring the brakes of the trailer wouldn't be activated. So if your trailer wasn't plugged into a tow vehicle the trailer's brakes should not be activated unless the off-chance the breakaway system's pin has been pulled. I attached an FAQ on breakaway systems for you to check out as well as an FAQ on brake controllers that you may find helpful.

  • Testing a Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller and Trailer Brake Magnets to Eliminate SH Code
The SH error code on the Prodigy indicates a general problem with the brake output circuit. In your case, in addition to the magnets possibly causing the problem, it is a good idea to check the rest of the system as well. I would check the magnets for wear before going on to test them with a meter. If the magnets show abnormal wear or if you can see the windings beginning to show through the friction surface of the magnet then they will need to be replaced. To further test your magnets,...

  • One Side Of Electric Trailer Brakes Are Locking Up When Braking
There are a few things you can check to make sure the brakes are adjusted correctly, but it sounds like there may be a short in the system. I would start by checking the trailer wiring connector on the truck and trailer for corrosion. If there is corrosion in either connector, it will need to be replaced. Next, I would inspect the wiring on the trailer, for any cut or frayed wires. It is possible that maybe only one brake assembly is getting power. You will also want to check the ground...

  • Trailer Brakes on 1977 Camper Will Not Release when Going Forward
It could be the magnets, wiring, or the trailer connectors on the trailer and truck. First, make sure that the truck and trailer connectors are clean and free of corrosion on the pins and where the wires attach. If you are using a 6-Way round trailer connector, one problem might be the positions of the brake output and 12 volt power pins are switched either on the truck or trailer connector. I would need to know what connectors are being used on the truck and trailer. Check the brake controller...

I checked with our resident tire and wheel expert, who tells me that a 235/85-16 tire can indeed be successfully used on a 6 inch wide rim. I wouldn't recommend going any narrower than that, though. I'll link you to our trailer tire help article that you might find helpful.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes That Stop Working When Trailer Is Hitched To Truck
Based on your description there is an issue with the wiring running from the 7-way connector to the trailer brakes on your trailer, but I will say this is a very odd issue. I recommend tracing the trailer brake output wire from your trailers 7-way looking for any damage or any places it might be getting pinched when the trailer is hitched to your ball mount. Replace any damage sections with # 10-1-1 and heat shrink butt connectors # DW05745-5. It is likely that the wires are getting pinched...

  • Troubleshooting An Electric Drum Trailer Brake that Will Not Release On One Side
I would start by checking to see if 12 volt power is constantly running to the right brake. If it is for some reason, trace the wiring to make sure it is connected in the right place. Also make sure the ground is attached to a clean and corrosion free bare metal surface. Then, you can go back and basically start from scratch with the installation. Make sure that everything is properly installed and that the brakes are adjusted correctly. You can also test the magnet. I would check the...

  • Electric Trailer Brakes Lock Up When Trailer is Plugged in to Tow Vehicle
The easiest first step here would be to try the trailer on a different truck, and see if the same problem occurs. If the trailer brakes are free until the trailer is plugged in, I suspect that something is mis wired. I would suggest examine the wiring where the break away system was bypassed and make sure that the 12-volt accessory feed is not connected to the brake wire at some point. Are you by chance using a 7 to 6-way adapter? If so, there are two accepted ways of wiring a 6-way connector....

  • Would Installing Higher Rated Brake Magnets Increase Braking Power
The magnets of a brake assembly do not actually give the brakes more or less power. You want to use the correct magnets for the assemblies you have on your trailer. Going with a magnet for a higher rated assembly will simply make the brake activation harder to control. They won't be any more powerful but they will be more touchy when adjusting the braking power. I would check the main ground for the trailer. This is the wire that runs from the trailer connector to the trailer frame and...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes that Lock Up When Connector is Connected
When we see this problem it's almost always with a 6-way trailer connector being used. The issue is that there are two ways that a 6-way is typically wired and the only difference is that the 12 volt accessory circuit and the brake output circuit are swapped. Anytime we see trailer brakes immediately locking up when connected and there's a 6-way involved this is the issue. What you need to do is swap the two circuits on the 6-way adapter or the 6-way connector and you'll be good.
