Item is just what we wanted and ordered. It came pretty quick. Satisfied customer here :)

All things listed were required although the terminals did not have a large enough opening as I needed. Also, it said that I needed 10 gauge wire but my Chevrolet is wired with 14 gauge so I have to modify the wiring. The idea was to hot wire the 12v pin on my stock 7 pin connector to supply my trailer with the necessary 12v to charge the trailer battery when on the road. However, after checking the stock wiring, I found it to be in good condition so I was able to reuse the existing stock wiring which was still in the stock wiring harness to the 7 pin hitch at the rear of my vehicle. I was able to pull the existing 12v wire off of the 12v pin in the fuse box and attach it to the new Pollack circuit breaker I purchased from etrailer.com I then only needed to use about 1 foot of the 10 gauge wire to go from my battery to the other pole of the Pollack circuit breaker. Very simple procedure sine I didn't have to run the 10 gauge back to the rear of the vehicle and attach it to the existing 14 gauge wire I had. The third picture I've posted with the red and blue wires next to each other show you the 10 gauge blue wire I purchased and the 14 gauge stock red wire that was in my truck.

  • Installing 12 Volt Power Circuit to 7-Way Trailer Connector on Rear of Tow Vehicle
Generally, the center pin on a standard 7-way is used for reverse lights on the trailer. However, not all trailers have reverse lights and essentially you can wire the extra pin anyway you'd like. Normally, the pin in the 1 O'clock position when looking into the vehicle side connector is for 12 volt power which would be used to maintain your trailer batteries. If your tow vehicle does not provide any 12 volt power to an existing 7-way connector it could be because there are fuses or...

You will need to hardwire the remaining 4 wires. White grounds to the trailer frame, blue connects to the blue wire of a brake controller, black goes to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker, # PK54540, and the last wire connects to the reverse light circuit. The Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow 7-, 5- and 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector, # HM48470, can be used as well but it is a hardwire connector meaning you would have to attach existing wires from the truck to the connector according to the wiring diagram I have linked for you. • Can a Breakaway Battery and Deep Cycle Battery be Charged off of the Same 12 Volt Line
What you could do is use the center pin on a 7-Way and instead of having the reverse light circuit on that pin you could remove the wire that is there and run a 10 gauge wire, such as # 10-1-1 sold by the foot, from it up to the truck battery via a 40 amp circuit breaker # PK54540. Then run wire from the center pin on the trailer side to the deep cycle battery to maintain it. This way the batteries each have their own 12 volt source and there is no chance of back feeding. • Parts Needed to Install Always-On 12V Power Circuit on 2018 Ford Super Duty
Ford did decide to change the operation of the 12V auxiliary power circuits on newer trucks. The fix for this annoying circumstance is easy enough. All you need to do is bypass the existing 12V circuit with a new direct battery connection that will allow the 7-way to have active 12V power at all times, regardless of the ignition key position or operation of the brake pedal. You will need just a few parts to accomplish this: circuit breaker # PK54540, 10-gauge wire # 10-1-1, ring terminals...

This kind of brake circuit warning can have several causes, from corroded contacts in the truck socket or trailer plug to a damaged wire or even just a wire that might be rubbing on the truck or trailer frame. Since your truck is a couple of years old I would start with the corrosion check. You might want to get a can of aerosol electrical contact cleaner like Caig De-Oxit.
