Video Transcript for Deka Wiring 10-2-1 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Decca jacketed 2 wire 10 gauge brake wire and this is sold per foot. I have a sample here, this is just to show you that this combination of the 2 heavy duty 10 gauge wires. They're jacketed individually and then all together. It's perfect for when installing a trailer brake controller on your vehicle. The 10 gauge duplex brake wire made with the 2 plastic insulated primary wires are laid parallel and the wires are covered with this high quality plastic jacket that protects the insulated conductors. The conductors are color coded for easy identification.

You can see a white and a black. This does meet all the SAEJ1128 specifications up to 50 volts and the insulation is rated to 105 degrees Celsius. Basically what this is used for is one wire is connected to your brake controller which carries the power back from the trailer brakes while the other is connected directly to the vehicle battery for an auxiliary power supply pin in the trailer connector. What's nice is having both of these wires in the same jacket. It makes running them from the back to the front of the vehicle very quick and easy.

That should do it for the review of the Decca jacketed 2 wire 10 gauge brake wire and this is sold per foot.

I was looking for two 10 gauge jacketed wires that could also be easily separated. Most of what I found were wires molded into the jacket which would make it very hard to strip and separate them where needed. etrailer is one of the very few places able to supply such wire.

by:

Seems like a good product, but it's very expensive and it wasn't necessary for my installation. Seems like they don't really know what I need for my mass produced American truck.

by:

As with past orders on etrailer I received nothing but superb service, advice and recommendations for this project; replacement and upgrade to automatic self adjusting brakes on a two axle travel trailer. Parts were top of the line and installed flawlessly. Highly recommend etrailer once again.

by:

It’s just like the wiring in your house. Very thick and abrasion resistant insulation. Ran it from my 7 pole plug through the frame to the front of my truck behind the front drivers side wheel well.

by:

Services fantastic.

by:

Exactly what I needed to fix the horse trailer after catching the brake wiring in some brush. Completely rewired the brakes and one year later ... Zero issues!

In the video it said get the 10' of this wire. My fault, I didn't notice when I bought it that it was by the foot. It shows a roll so I never put two and two together. So I received a 2'section which is completely worthless.

by:

I think E trailer is the only place to get this. Perfect for trailer wiring and brake controller feeds.

by:

I purchased this cabling to replace existing trailer brake wiring that had failed due to a short circuit. It is heavy duty by sill easy to work with. I would certainly order it again if I have a need. As always etrailer.com provides excellent products and customer service.

by:

Great product! I was able to complete my electric brake controller installation with ease!!! Great instructional video.

by:

Good quality wire, works well and easy to use.

Still working well, no issues, seems to be very high quality.

by:

Heavy duty wire that will last the truc k!!!

by:

Products I received were fine. The shipping was very quick, and arrived quickly. Where etrailer really shined was in their contact help. My email was answered quickly, with alternate suggestions (which were both a closer match and cheaper alternative to my pick) and clearly explained by my online contact. They were a very big help.

I'm a repeat customer of etrailer, and never had an issue. Good people there, period.

Great for trickle charging my trailer winch battery

These things are major time-savers! Bolt the whole assembly on, wire it up, and go! Can't beat the price either - would cost quite a bit more buying the parts individually. Made a huge difference in stopping power on my 18' Dively car hauler, 9990 GVWR. The brakes were 6 years old at the time, and had tens of thousands of miles on them - abusive miles too, with shoes seizing and dragging, electrical failures causing some to work 3x as hard as others, stop and go MA traffic, etc.

While I was at it, I also grabbed 30' of Deka jacketed 2-wire 10 gauge brake wiring, and redid the whole system from the plug back. I also removed the drums, had them turned at a local garage, and installed brand new bearings, races, & seals. The improvement in stopping power was nothing short of amazing.

I went from having my Tekonsha P3 on boost level 3 at 11 volts +, trailer UNLOADED, to running boost level 1 at 6 volts with 4,000 lbs. on the 2k lb. trailer! BIG difference in stopping power!

Seems my brake backing plate installation review got posted under the Deka wire ... but anyway ... the wire is working great a year later. Gone roughly 2k miles with several hundred miles in corrosive road salt. I ran the wire through washers I welded to the inside of the frame. Holding up well with the constant abrasion on our endlessly potholed roads here in Massachusetts. Well worth the price - brakes have been working perfect ever since!

by:

Great place to buy trailer supplies!

by:

My tow vehicle does not have factory connections for trailer wiring. Used this cable for trailer brakes and auxillary power. This cable is just what I needed to run from rear to front of my vehicle on the underside. The sheathing protects the wire from the elements. The shipping was quick.

After one year of use, no problems what so ever.

by:

Wiring has been good I would recommend it. When I order 33ft however, I received 30 foot roll and another 3 foot piece, not a continuous roll of 33ft. Disappointing.

by:

Good gauge of wire and well insulated would buy again

by:

Hello, this is my second order from the guys at etrailer.com, and let me tell you they ship SUPER FAST, and the constantly keep communicating about your order. These guys don't play around, hats off to y'all. This product worked out great, i did have to cut about 1/3 of the 10ga wire though to get it to fit in my Bargman 7-way. But at least i wont get a current drop though. Very nice insulation jacket too. (Not the hard plastic crap) thanks again guys for great customer service

Great product!

by:

I had a great experience. Got the product with no problems.

by:

This item was recommended to use with electric brakes. Made sense. When arrived, I found that the wire was to large to fit in the axle tubes and trailer conduit. Recommend that you check to make sure it fits before buying. The product is high quality, and would work great for the application if it fit.

Everything has worked flawless

by:

etrailer products and service are excellent! With their helpful videos and staff (plus a little help from Curt Manufacturing and our teardrop trailer manufacturer (CampInn)) I was able to install electric brakes on the trailer, and a controller in my vehicle by myself. I had never installed electric brakes before. Everything works perfectly!

by:

Amazing and professional service! I had to keep myself from completing the job too fast and rushing through steps. Attention to details is a must when working with electrical systems and with some patience I was happy to say I completed a successful job. I will be a repeat customer!

As a military member, I am moving again after only a year and I hooked up my trailer to my truck and all of the components worked! I am very pleased with this product.

  • What Would Cause Voltage Drop Between Front of Trailer and Brake Assemblies
Typically if there's a large voltage drop like you mentioned the issue is the longer run of wire not being a heavy enough gauge of wire. You'll need to use 10 gauge wire like 10-1-1 to make the run from the front of the trailer back to the assemblies and you'll see the voltage drop be much smaller.

  • Gauge Wire Recommendation for Wiring up Trailer Brakes
I'd recommend using 10 gauge wire like part # 10-2-1 (sold by the foot) for the brake power and ground wires as this will be more than adequate and will ensure you get plenty of amperage to activate the brakes.

  • Troubleshooting Electric Drum Brakes That Do Not Grip Despite Functioning Magnets
Based on your troubleshooting efforts so far I suggest that you test the trailer brakes without using a vehicle and brake controller; you can test the trailer brakes directly by applying +12V power and ground to the appropriate contacts on the trailer plug. Please refer to the linked photo. A set of jumper cables and 10-gauge wire like # 10-1-1 or # 10-2-1 make it simple enough to "hot wire" the brake circuit with the full power from your vehicle battery or a well-charged spare. • Running Wire For A Brake Controller Through The Firewall Of A Vehicle
To run a wire through the firewall of your Mercedes-Benz GLK350, you will want to first check for wires already run through the firewall. If you can use the same location, that minimizes any issue. If you need to use a different location, check for grommets first. Often there are rubber grommets that cover a hole that is already in your firewall and removing that grommet, cutting or drilling a hole and replacing it around the wire is the next best option. The last option is to drill...

The ground may be sufficient but it wouldn't hurt to test it using an alternate ground location as well. Perform the test using just the manual override and not the brake pedal. Make sure the controller is set to the maximum output level and that it is mounted within the range specified by the instructions. Also make sure that it is not tilted or turned to the side. If the controller you are using has a leveler knob, you will need to make sure it is properly adjusted according to the...

  • How to Check Electric Brakes and Wiring on a 36 Foot Gooseneck Trialer with Brakes on Two Axles
It sounds like you had a short on the electric brake controller wiring at some point, since the wires are black. This indicates the wiring was overheated. The first thing I would do is check the 7-Way connector on the trailer and the truck for proper wiring. I attached a link to our wiring page for you. • Ideas to Prevent Rodents from Eating Trailer Wiring
I did some searching around on the internet and came up with a few interesting tips to prevent rodents from eating vehicle/trailer wiring. Here is what I found: Noise will keep the rodent's away. So a portable radio would work for this. Flashing lights, so like a strobe light or any other type of blinking light. Putting a garden gnome near the trailer. Spraying the wires with capsaicin. I normally don't recommend this, but getting a cat might keep them away. Mouse traps. For fish wiring...

If all the other functions for the 7-Way on your 2015 Ford F-250 are working correctly, but you aren't receiving any power at the 12V pin, then I recommend checking for any missing or damaged fuses on the truck. I took a look at the online owner's manual for your F-250 and found that there should be a 25 amp cartridge fuse located in the #90 position inside the engine compartment power distribution box. You are super close to having the brakes functional on your trailer. Brake magnet wires are not polarity sensitive either so either can be ground or power.

The Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge, Brake Wire # 10-2-1 is sold by the foot, so you'd need to order based off the footage needed. For example, if you needed 4 feet you'd need to order 4 and so on. So if you're two feet short, you'd need to order two more sections. Yes, 14 gauge wire seems too small. I would go with 10 or 12 gauge. For 10 gauge you can use # 10-1-1 and for 12 gauge use # 12-1-1. These wires are sold in increments of 1 foot. So if you needed 20 feet of wire you would enter 20 in the quantity box. The 12 gauge would be the best option. You mentioned replacing the brakes with the Nev-R-Adjust a year ago. It has probably been long enough, depending on how many miles were put on the trailer, but just to be sure even Nev-R-Adjust brakes...
