Video Transcript for Deka 12 Gauge Black Primary Wire Review

Today we're going to review and install the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1. It meets the SAE J 1128 specification, has a nice thermal plastic cover, and inside are copper leads. Here we can see the nice copper strands. They're good and durable, don't break easily. After I strap back, they can be twisted together, then routed or connected as needed. Our 12-gauge wire can handle up to 50 volts and has a max temperature of 176 degrees Fahrenheit.

It has many uses. Some typical uses will be wiring on trailers, general connections or wiring repairs. Now for this application we're going to add some 12-gauge wire, slide it into the butt connector, crimp it down. We're going to go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape to help keep it clean from dirt, dust, debris, and moisture. That will do it for the review and install of the Deka 12-gauge black primary wire, part number 12-1-1.

  • Installing Aftermarket Brake Controller On 2013 Chevrolet Silverado With Factory Brake Controller
I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains step-by-step how to install a brake controller on your 2013 Silverado with the factory brake controller installed. You do not need to do anything with the factory controller. You will install the new brake controller by hardwiring it to the wires located under the dash about where your left shin is when in the driver seat. Connect the wires as follows: GM Wire to Brake Control Wire Function Red/Black to Black Battery Power White...

  • Recommendation For Different Locations For Ground Wire
Yes that is possible. The main concern with your ground wire is that it is solidly attached to a good ground location. Normally, one of the best and easiest places to mount your ground wire is the vehicle or trailer frame. No matter what, the ground wire needs to be firmly mounted to a clean and corrosion free metal location. Since you may need additional wire for your solution, I recommend our 12 gauge primary wire that you can purchase by the foot, Item # 12-1-1. Good luck with...

  • Wires Get Hot and Smell Wired to 12v Battery to Power Interior Light in Enclosed Trailer
Yes you want to ground the 12v battery to a clean bare metal surface on the trailer frame when using a spare battery to power an interior light. You want to make sure the battery is good and all of your spliced connections are connected properly. Check any of the wiring for damaged or frayed wiring. If you are using a smaller gauge wire, I recommend a 12 gauge wire like part # 12-1-1 if you are powering a lot of lights or the lights draw a lot of power.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Circuit that Shorts Vehicle Wiring When Connected
You've done a great job so far tracking down where the problem is. The unfortunate part though is that there is a short somewhere on the wiring of the circuit that you just haven't been able to find. You'll need to somehow find a way to track down where it is or use new wire to bypass the old wiring and short like with part # 12-1-1 which is 12 gauge wire sold by the foot.

  • Can The Electric Trailer Brake Wiring Cross On The Rear Axle Instead Of The Front Axle?
Yes, you can run the 12 Gauge Black Primary Wire # 12-1-1 in the manner that you have described. From the front left brake to the rear left brake, then across the rear axle to the right side rear and front brakes. The brakes will continue to operate properly in this orientation.

  • Bypassing Factory Brake Controller on 2014 Chevrolet 3500
To bypass the factory brake controller in your 2014 Chevy Silverado 3500 you will just need to do a few things. Under the dash in your Silverado, to the left of the steering column, there should be a tow package wire bundle that is held together with a white tag. The functions for each wire should be labeled on the tag. You will find a red/black wire for the 12 volt power that will go to the brake controller black wire. Next there should be a white ground wire that will go to the white...

  • Can Wire Be Added to 7-Way Wiring To Increase Length
Yes, you can add wire to lengthen the short wire you have on your 7-way so that it stops pulling itself out. We don't carry 16 gauge wire but we do have 12 gauge as part # 12-1-1 which is sold by the foot.

  • Troubleshooting Radiator Fan With 12V Battery Where Wires Get Very Hot
The wires may not be the correct gauge. They should not have been hot with 12V power. The motor may be drawing too much power as well. If the motor isn't overheating, than replacing the wires should solve the problem. You can use # 16-1-1 or # 12-1-1 depending on the amperage needs of your motor and the length of wire needed. Longer distances requires thicker gauge wire for proper amperage.

  • Wire Gauge for 20 LED Trailer Clearance Lights on 150-Foot Run
Twenty (20) individual LED clearance lights that each draw .048-amps at 12-volts will have a total current requirement of less than 1-amp. But a long 150-foot total wiring run will mean some losses. I recommend using dual runs of 10-gauge wire # 10-1-1 to ensure you get the full brightness from all those LED lights.

  • Recommended Wire Gauge for Wiring Electric Brakes on Trailer
For your flat bed trailer, I recommend using 12 gauge wire like # 12-1-1 at the minimum, but preferably 10 gauge wire like # 10-1-1. Both of these wires are sold by the foot, so you can order the exact length you are needing. If you were to use a thinner gauge wire than this, the 12V power needed to activate the electric brakes may be enough to overload the wires and cause them to overheat. I have attached an article on adding electric trailer brakes to a trailer that you might also find...

  • Locating Wires for Electric Brake Assemblies on Used Car Hauler
Each brake assembly on a trailer will have two wires coming out the back; a wire for ground and a wire for power. The ground wire can simply be attached to a clean, bare metal surface on the trailer frame. The power wire is what will run from the assemblies up to the front of the trailer to the 7-Way connector at the 5 o'clock position. This wire is indeed usually a 10-gauge wire with blue insulation like # 10-1-1. It's possible that the brake wire on your trailer is a 12-gauge wire instead,...

If you have the lights and wiring already and only need additional wiring to make the connections we have the part # 10-1-1 which is 10 gauge wire sold by the foot and # 12-1-1 which is 12 gauge wire sold by the foot. We also have the junction box 7-way kit part # ET7WK that comes with a 7-way plus a junction box to wire it to.

  • Trailer Wiring Gauge Recommendation for Installing Brake Controller
Ideally you run 10 guage like part # 10-1-1 as it's the heavier and will guarantee the circuit can carry the amperage. There are plenty of situations where 12 gauge will be fine like part # 12-1-1 but if the trailer has several sets of brake axles and the wiring ends up being longer than usual the 10 gauge provides a bit of a safety net. Basically the longer the wire the more resistance so going heavier than needed can compensate for that. As far as making the connection to the 7-way your...

  • How To Run Backup Lights On a Trailer
In order to run reverse lights on a trailer they will need to be powered through the trailer connector. If you have a 7-way trailer connector which is most common then there will already be a terminal for the reverse light circuit which is activated by the vehicle. This means you will need to run a wire like part # 12-1-1 from the front of the trailer to the rear but there is no way around that to my knowledge. This will then allow you to install any backup light like the Optronics FLEET...
