Video Transcript for Brophy Hitch Adapter Review HT5R

Today we'll be taking a look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver with a 5 inch rise, part number HT5R. The Brophy Hitch Adapter is going to allow you to convert your Class I and II 1 1/4 inch receiver to your 2 inch receiver, allowing you to use any 2 inch accessory. It offers a 5 inch rise, giving us more ground clearance here at the rear of the vehicle for our accessories. We're using a cargo carrier with our adapter here today, but it's also going to work great for your bike racks or any other 2 inch accessories. Now please keep in mind when using this adapter, it does cut your tongue weight capacity in half. It is not recommended for towing use, so no ball mounts. This is a much more economical solution than having two bike racks or two cargo carriers for multiple vehicles and it's definitely cheaper than purchasing a different hitch.

In addition to the rise, it gives us a 7 inch extension. It's also made out of a sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish, so it's going to stand up to the elements. It has a 300 pound weight capacity. It's an extraordinarily easy installation. We've got our adapter plugged into our 1 1/4 inch receiver and our accessory plugged into our adapter. The pin and clips are sold separately from the hitch adapter, so you'll need to pick some up here at etrailer.com.

Here at the adapter end, we've got a PC3, this is going to be our 5/8th pin and clip. Here at the hitch end, we've got a PC2, that's going to be our 1/2 inch pin and clip. That's going to complete our look at the Brophy Hitch Adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch trailer hitch receiver with a 5 inch rise, part number HT5R.

I bought this adapter so that I could mount a bike rack on the back of my 2012 Honda Civic. The adapter got the bikes high enough so that they wouldn't hit the pavement when backing out of my driveway and transitioning to the street. The product is definitely strong and well made. It was put to the test with a very heavy steel thule bike rack that was definitely heavier than all 4 of the bikes that were mounted on it. The fit was precise so it didn't hit my rear bumper as well.

Thank you for the personal touch on the order. Not many company's do this. This is a good product and a good price.

My car sits low and we needed to raise the carrier up. Looks like this will work out.

The carrier is still working out great for me. I still cant leave the house alone. I have even recommend this to a friend and he also bought one.Thank you again for a good product.

For being so expensive, you would think it would be better quality. It’s not aligned properly and when i attach my bike rack, it’s crooked. Second, the weld was sloppy and had extra solder. So much so, that i couldn’t push it into the hitch far enough to get the pin in. I had to remove some solder do it would fit properly (all the way in so i could put the pin in). The adapter was almost as expensive as the hitch.

This well-made adapter is ideal for the 2016 Mazda Miata because it provides significant clearance for Curt Manufacturing's folding aluminum cargo carrier and remains 1 1/4" away from the rear license plate. I've already used this rig several times in several days (lawnmower, luggage, packages to be shipped) and it works great. Along with this fantastic product is fantastic service from the eTrailer.com team. Friendly, helpful, responsive. I couldn't ask for anything more, and recommend both this product and its distributor highly.

Perfect for my 2015 honda fit
It helped
a lot by adding that 5 inch rise
No more scraping on the driveways or dips.
I highly recommend to anyone that owns or is planning to buy a cargo hitch basket those who own a smaller car.

by:

Because of low ground clearance I bought this high 5" high rise for my carrier that I bought from you all and it worked great. I loved the ability to walk between the carrier and trunk. The high rise is easy to install. We had absolutely no issues on our 3000 mile round trip journey. The hitch, high rise and carrier were all purchased from you.

Perfect Fit for my 2017 Prius. Instruction video was a great help. I’ve only purchased all my towing needs from Etrailer.com never been disappointed with their product and services. Thanks again.

Working out well. Just used it on a week long vacation with my b III e rack that holds 4 bikes. Been able to avoid bottoming out.

My only comment would be that the black paint has worn off pretty quick after one New England winter.

Going well. Used it many times and it holds up well

This works GREAT when we use our Segway PT Double Carrier on the back of our Class C RV. This VERY STURDY hitch height adapter allows us to deal with the extra receiver height on the RV and get the hitch tube down to a normal level. We send all of our Segway PT Carrier customers to etrailer.com to purchase hitch height adapters for their rigs when hitch height is a problem or, for hitches when they don't yet have a hitch on their vehicle. The folks at etrailer.com are just like family when speaking with them on the phone.

by:

The quality of the hitch adapter looks great and very stout.

by:

This is just what I needed. In fact it is almost identical to the one that I had custom made out of 2 other hitches welded together.

Lloyd

Purchased this for my 08 Honda Fit so that my 1.25" hitch could fit my 2" Bike Rack. Hitch Adapter was easy to install, however, I recommend also purchasing a hitch clamp. There was a bit of play between the adapter and the hitch, but that's expected. Adapter is well made and should last a long time. Only "issue" I had was the labels. I recognize everyone needs to advertise/market themselves but it would be nice to have a clean part without all the labels on it. Nothing a blade and goo-gone can't fix.

I've had this adapter for nearly 1.5 yrs now and it has been the best solution to use a 2" hitch bike rack on a small vehicle. It's incredibly sturdy and durable (backed up into a few parking curbs over the last 1.5 yrs when the rack wasn't on, but no dents to prove it). One drawback is the bit of wiggle between the hitch and the adapter, but if you have a local shop that can weld them together, then you're all set. Definitely recommend!

This was used on a 2012 VW Golf 2 door hatchback, base model.

I traded my car in today for another model, so apologies I don't have photos to share!

Another option for easily removing the wiggle between your 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch and hitch adapter is an Anti-Rattle Device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061-125.

08' Honda CrV w/5" Brophy Hitch Riser

Awesome product with ultra fast int'l shipping to Canada next spor from etrailer. I read reviews, watched videos and studied the 360 degree measurements and dimensions as the tolerance on my CRV was tight. Prepared to grind or shave down the unit to clear my bumper I was astonished to fit it on and have 'just enough clearance'. I have a Class 1 hitch by Curt which is recessed more deeply than other brands.

Excellent product, very well made

by:

Works ok. The dimensions of the receiver (female) are a bit large. So the bike rack I purchased rattles & sways to-and-fro when mounted. I attempted to place some wood shims in the adapter to minimize this occurrence, but was unsuccessful.

To help prevent sway and rattle of your bike rack in the 2 inch hitch receiver, an anti-rattle device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061 is a great solution.

I was hunting the web for a trailer hitch that would work with my Ford Fiesta and my handicap rack that wouldn't scrap the road or driveways and intersection.
I came across the Hitch Adapter from e-trailer.com. So I ordered the product.
Was so excited when the hitch arrived and took it to my welding shop to have custom adjustment for my bumper. For the first time since April 1, 2018 when my handicap rack arrived it didn't drag the pavement.
I am so excited and would love to have all of you know how wonderful the service from this company as the hitch even arrived a day early.
WTG guy on your service........

I received my trailer hitch adapter today on time as promised. I tried it out on both cars ( 2009 hyundai elantra and 2013 hyundai sonota . It works well by clearing the bumpers and raising the hitch 4 or 5 inches that i was trying to accomplish. I use the hitch for a bike rack and it was too low to the ground. My hitch is a 1-1/4 that the HT5R converts to a 2 inch but my bike rack also had an adapter to 2 inch, so it works perfect. I had talked to customer service prior to buying and they steered me in the correct direction and i am pleased to solve this problem.

The hitch raiser-upper is doing very well and has made a couple trips to Florida on one car and the other a bunch of trips to bike trails and our get away cabin. There are no problems but id like to see a solution to the receiver being tighter fit when slid into with the adapter. I know it has to go in easily but was thinking of putting some steel shims in to tighten it. It has not been a problem but i thought it would be good to cut down any play or sway while on the road . Thx for the follow up

Great adapter to be able to use a 2" 1Up bike rack in my 1.25" receiving hitch and gains 5" of elevation to help keep it from dragging over uneven terrain. I drive a 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid.

Still loving this adapter and my set up!

by:

The conversion piece is exactly what I needed. The hitch on my car is 1 1/2 " (even tho' the dealer promised me a 2" hitch). My carrier has a 2" opening. A standard converter left it too close to the ground when my mobility scooter was loaded.
This piece was easy to install and a test run today proved it to be a very wise purchase.

the adapter is well made but i should have measured the clearences between the bumper and the hitch, it was about 6" to short so i ordered an estension to make up the distance

I recently bought your Trailer hitch for my Buick Lacrosse. I am very please with the product and your service. I had to by this Hitch Adapter because the cargo carrier we will be purchasing has a 2" receiver. I chose this model because it will also raise the cargo carrier 5" higher from the road. Thank you for your great service and products.

So far, so good. Had to cut into the bumper if my 2011 Jetta in oder to make it work. Here is a picture.

  • Is There a 2 Inch Hitch for a 2019 Acura ILX
The only trailer hitch options available for a 2019 Acura ILX are 1-1/4", the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11391 is what I recommend using. That said, there is still an option to use 2" hitch mounted accessories via a hitch expander, the Brophy Hitch Adapter part # HTAD or part # HT5R. Please note, the use of a hitch adapter will reduce the tongue weight capacity by 50%.

If you are needing to use a 2 inch accessory such as a ball mount or bike rack with a 1-1/4 inch receiver on your vehicle you will need to use an adapter between the two. We have a nice selection of 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch adapters available, such as the excellent Brophy # HTAD or the # HT5R that also provides 5 inches of rise. This will insert into the 1-1/4 inch receiver on your vehicle to provide a 2 inch receiver on the other end to which you can install the accessory. Please just keep...

  • Using a 2" Thule T2 Classic Bike Rack With a 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver
I do have a recommendation for you as Thule only offers the Replacement 1-1/4" Hitch and Backbone Assembly # 753370902 for changing your Thule T2 Classic 2" to a 1-1/4". You can use either a Straight Adapter # e43YR or Rise Adapter # HT5R to adapt your 1-1/4" hitch to carry the 2" bike rack. Do note that the adapter will reduce the tongue weight rating on your receiver by 50%. So if you have a tongue weight rating of 350lbs you will have to stay 175lbs or below for the adapter.

  • 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch Hitch Adapter Recommendation for Curt Hitch # C11363
The Curt hitch part # C11363 is designed for lighter duty vehicles like your 2013 Fiat 500 which is why it has the smaller hitch size of 1-1/4 inches. Your bike rack is designed for the larger hitch size of 2 inch which we have the adapter # HT5R for. But you should note that when you use an adapter like this you cut the capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. So you'd be left with 100 lbs tongue weight capacity and limited to only carrying 2 bikes.

Unfortunately I do have the distance from the pin hole on your hitch to the closest edge of the bumper to compare this to. However, this can be found pretty easily with a ruler and any other straight object, like another ruler or something. If you get less than 3 1/2 inches, you are good to go with the Brophy # HT5R. I'd recommend using the CR Brophy # HT5R along with the # HT02. The # HT5R is a 1-1/4 to 2 inch adapter with a 5 inch rise. You'd use the # HT02 to reduce the 2 inch receiver on the # HT5R back down to a 1-1/4 inch adapter. You'll need one # PC3 hitch pin to retain the # HT02 in the adapter, and one # PC2 hitch...

In a multi-part system the lowest-rated part determines overall capacity, like the weakest-link-in-the-chain idea.
