Video Transcript for Hopkins 7-Way to 4-Wire Flat Heavy-Duty Trailer Coiled Wire Adapter Review

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're gonna be checking out the Hopkins trailer wiring adapter. So this is gonna let you go from a seven-way round type connector to a four-way flat type connector. What this is gonna do is really simple. It's gonna let you plug into your vehicle's seven-way round type connector and bring it down to a four-way flat. So the signals that it's gonna send back to your trailer will be your taillights, your brake lights, and your turn signals.

Now there's a ton of different adapters like this, or similar to this, available and you know, what this one will work good for is just about any situation really, but I could see it really becoming useful for those of you that tow multiple different trailers, you're not real sure what trailer you're gonna be pulling type deal. If your trailer wiring's kind of short, maybe you have a a real long ball mount or if your seven-way's in a kind of a funny spot like our 4Runner here today. So believe it or not, the seven-way is all the way kind of buried way over here on the driver's side. And even with this trailer's wiring, like, that's a pretty good length. You know, that's not short by any means.

There's no way that would even come close to being able to plug in. So by utilizing our adapter, I'll be able to, maybe, if I get to it here, plug it in, that'll give us all that extra length we need and then some, honestly. So I might be able to just kind of drape this over and allow you to make that connection and not have to worry about it coming disconnected when you make those turns and stuff, too. Since this is coiled, it'll stretch out when you make the turns or if you need that length and kind of gives you the freedom to kind of set things up how you want to. If you we're to stretch this cord out completely, the length that it's gonna give you is three feet.

So that should be more than enough for just about any situation you might find yourself in. If you don't think you're gonna need any additional length like this and you're looking for something a little bit different, what I would suggest is a real simple adapter like this. This is a seven-way, and then on the back there's just a four-way that'll allow you to plug in there. So that's always an option for you as well. And there's different variations to this as well.

So we just did one of these. It's a seven- to five-way flat type connector on this end. So if you got a a five-way type flat connector on your trailer, you can always check that out and that'll allow you to hook everything up and get it going. As far as the quality of this, I'm not gonna lie, I'm usually not super crazy about Hopkins stuff but like I said, I've been doing several of these wiring adapters and I actually like 'em, I think they're well built. The wires feel thick, you know, it has a good coating on it that's, you know, not super stiff but not super loose, so it'll stretch out when you need it to and whatnot. But more importantly, the connectors are really nice. They're not that brittle plastic like you'd usually see. They're almost a, almost like a hard rubber, I guess, if that makes sense. And what I like about 'em too is everything is sealed up up nice, for the most part. Like on some of the cheaper ones you'll see the wires kind of come in and it's just kind of cinched down. That's not the case with these. It's all molded almost, I guess you could say. And I like how on the ends they're somewhat reinforced, you know, like drops back some. 'Cause a lot of times it'll happen over years, you know, without this here there's no support there. Then the wires end up getting kind of tossed around like that and cause some connection issues, so this should hold up for some time. I like the thickness on the four-way side too. It gives you a good, you know, spot to actually grip and get it plugged in. So pretty impressed with it, actually, should definitely hold up. Gives you a little dust cover, too. So really no reason that this should give you any issues for quite some time. Other than that, at the end of the day, you know, there's really not a whole lot to it. Pretty simple part, but can be a great solution for a lot of people who are needing to get their four-way trailer hooked up to their vehicle that has a seven-way round style trailer connector. And that'll finish up our look at of the Hopkins seven to four-way trailer wiring adapter.

Works as well as the day I bought it. No complaints. A great product.

by:

Needed a longer connector for my vehicles. Both have 7 way plugs, but I use a trailer with a 4 flat plug. The coiled adapter works great for both of the vehicles. Very good product if you need some extra length and the fact that it has the coils makes for a better appearance.

by:

Will work great around the water. Always backing the trailer to the river with multiple turns and have enough stretch to stay connected!

by:

Excellent quality and very sturdy const ruction.

by:

I needed a trailer lite adapter for my 4Runner to my boat trailer. This adapter was just what I needed and it worked great, just as expected. It's also high quality and reasonably priced. Keep up the great work etrailer.

Still works great, I also use it when I tow my utility trailer.

by:

Bridges the gap nicely between the utility and small boat trailers I use and the offset light socket on my 2009 4Runner. Really heavy construction; it feels like it'll last a long, long time.

by:

Very well put together robust at both ends easy to attach at either connection not flimsy at all.

by:

haven't hook it up yet. Looks like this solves the extra wire cable to light up the cargo carrier. No more wire cable hitting the road surface and no more cable wrappings around the long trailer hitch.

by:

This was perfect for me!

by:

Heavy duty works great

by:

Good quality product

by:

Useless- how many towed vehicles are within the three foot length of this cable? Do not order this with the wiring kit for your towed vehicle that lets you use the vehicles tail lights instead of the magnetic lights. The tow bar between your motorhome and the "toad" is around 4' long. I'm not sure what this can be used for.

by:

The tow-harness and components appears quite well made. Fit was perfect, installation was easy, and tested and worked the first time. The instructions, however, may have been more specific to earlier Pilots, thus were not entireley clear and caused some delay in installation.

by:

Perfect design! The bright color acts as a reminder not to leave it plugged in when I'm done trailering. The coil design extends and contracts with the movement of the truck.

by:

Exactly what I wanted. Shipping was fast as always. Amazing place to shop!

Better than I expected! Works awesome!

by:

I’m using this adapter between my Audi Q5 and my lightweight boat trailer. I tried it yesterday and it works fine. Looks to be a well made product and should be durable - time will tell!

by:

This is just what I was looking for. It works perfect for my trailer and car carrier. It's heavy duty. The shipping was fast. I looked at other ones, but none as good as this for the price.I will buy from trailer again.

by:

I Installed on my 2013 Silverado with no problems. I pull the pickup with a Triple E Empress RV and have gone from Iowa to Key West last winter and from Iowa to Prince Edwards Island Canada last summer.

by:

Products were delivered with very short wait time.

Adapter cable HM47065 is a replacement of the original cable purchased for towing in 2012.

Socket HM48480 is a replacement of the socket that was on the motor home when purchased used in 2012.

They haven't been installed yet, but I don't expect any issues.

Thanks

by:

Product worked as described and is well made. Like the coils as this prevents the wire harness from dragging on the ground while allowing harness to stretch during turns.

by:

I have yet to make a connection from truck to trailer harness, however I anticipate functionality since the HM47065 Adapter is very well constructed. Thank you

by:

Perfect for your new SUV with a 7 pin electrical connector, so you can connect to that 4 pin trailer.

by:

Haven't got to use adapter very impressed with the construction of this product, will be perfect for what the use will be. Have a newer and larger truck my trailer connections are too short with out the wire adapter.

by:

This was a prompt and satisfactory transaction with delivery in three days. The merchandise is a quality trailer light connector. I highly recommend etrailer.com for anyone needing trailer accessories.

  • 7-Way to 4-Way Adapter for a 2016 Honda Pilot with Factory 7-Way Trailer Connector
You could use 7- to 4-Way adapter # HM47065 if you need the extra 3 feet of length the coiled cable provides. If you do not need the extra length you could use adapter # PK12716 and the trailer's 4-Way would plug into the back of it (which would be plugged into the 7-Way). I have linked video reviews of both adapters for you.

  • Adapting a 7-Way Trailer Connector on an RV to a 4-Way Flat on a Towed Vehicle

If the coach has a 7-Way round pin connector then you can use an adapter such as # 47405. But you will likely need a 4-Way extension, # HM47115, to reach from the front of the vehicle to the coach. It will work if you 4way plug from your trailer is long enough to reach the plug with no chance of pulling out. The one I recommend is going to be the Hopkins Heavy-Duty Trailer Coiled Wire Adapter # HM47065. It is a much more robust cord that is coiled so it won't drag. We also have plug-style adapters such as # HM47570 that convert a 7-way to 4-, 5- and 6-pole, all in one product. All wiring adapters are shown on the linked page.
