From my research, I found that the Ion can be flat-towed if it is not the Red Line model. When flat-towing any vehicle, you will need 5 items. You need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the vehicle, and most states now require a supplemental brake system.
The base plates I recommend for your Ion is the Roadmaster EZ Base Plates, part # 523118-1. The tow bar I recommend is the Roadmaster Tracker Tow Bar, part # RM-020. Since you need to tow the Ion with the tow bar as level as possible, you may need a high-low adapter. I have attached a link to our product page for high-low adapters you can check out.
For safety cables you will need part # RM-643.
The tail light wiring kit I recommend is part # TR118821. If a fuse-bypass is required, you can use part # RM76511.
If you have a 7-way connector on your Suburban you will need an umbilical like part # HM47065 to attach the Ion to the Suburban wiring. If you have a different connector on your Suburban let me know and I can make a recommendation.
The supplemental brake system I recommend for your Ion is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System, part # SM99251.
I have attached some helpful articles for these products you can check out.
