Winch is very heavy duty and well coated with zinc. Handle can be removed and inserted in the low or high speed with a push of a button. Great winch. However, the brake lever is in a bag with a few hardware parts which must be assembled to the winch. I thought the brake lever would already be assembled to the winch. The e-clip (or wave washer as the instructions call it) that holds the brake lever in place broke when trying to clip it on. I had to run to an auto parts store 10 miles away to buy a new e-clip as I was in the middle of installation. If the brake lever had already been installed I would have given the winch five stars.

These 3700 lb winches work great. Both winches were installed on my slip dock where the cables go to shore to hold slip in place. Much easier now to bring the dock in to shore when the water comes up or down in this reservoir. My lake neighbors are all jealous!

heavy duty winch, handle easy to crank.

After a year of outdoor exposure, winches are still functioning well, easy to crank.

by:

Part we needed was in stock and arrived quickly once ordered.

by:

Really like the product it’s heavy duty and built well going to work great for pulling My jeeps up on the car hauler just in case something breaks while Fourwheelin I have the option to use the winch. I built a nice strong mounting plate for it and works wonderful. Did not even have to use the low gearing to crank the jeep up on the car hauler

by:

works good

by:

The winch has worked as expected. We use this winch to get disabled cars, trucks and tractors onto a trailer. Two speeds are useful when winching up a non powered unit.

by:

I just mounted it looks good I'll send you an update soon

by:

Our last ones were made in the USA. These r made in China. Great service and fast delivery!

It is the closest to what I needed, I really needed a 3 speed winch. But it will do the job. I wore out my old one.

Quality product. Heavy duty, holds more cable than most cranks. Great customer service.

A year into service and working like a charm.

See what our Experts say about this Fulton Trailer Winch

  • How to Estimate Trailer Weight Capacity Based on Axle Dimensions
Well, that's a good question. Before you install any weight-bearing item on your 5 x 10 tilt trailer, such as a winch or jack, I do suggest checking the trailer VIN sticker or the identification tag on the axle itself for a weight capacity. Things can get kind of sketchy when trailers are modified. If the trailer has had previous owners that made changes it can be tough to determine weight capacity. If you can find the axle rating that will give you a good starting basis for estimating...

  • Recommended Hand Winch Weight Rating for 6000 lb Boat on EZ Loader Trailer
The capacity of each hand winch is stated with one layer of rope, cable or strap around the drum. The Fulton # F142430 you mentioned has a 3700 lb capacity, which would diminish by 10 percent each time the cable is wrapped around the drum. With the cable wrapped around three times, the capacity would be about 3000 lbs. This is our highest rated hand winch, I am not sure which Dutton-Lainson winch you are speaking of. When choosing between two winches, I would recommend always choosing...

  • Replacement Winch for Fulton F3700
The Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer # F142430 is the winch that replaced the T3700 you mentioned. This is a cable only winch but it would still be your best option. For a 50 foot cable you'd then want the part # FWC7500100 which would work well with this winch and is the cable Fulton recommend.

  • How to Determine What Size Boat that a Winch Can Pull
The Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch with Handbrake # F142430 that you referenced has a 3,700 lbs weight capacity. The size and weight of the boat that it can pull really depends on what your boat trailer setup is like. A boat to winch size capacity is typically 2 to 1 which means that this particular winch should typically be able to pull a 7,000 lb boat. If you have good rollers and a short distance to pull then that could make the ratio 3 to 1. If you have wooden bunks...

  • Electric and Hand Winch Recommendation For 6,600 Lb Boat
I am happy to recommend a couple of winches for you. Since your boat on rollers is just over the 2:1 ratio you need a winch with a capacity of at least half the weight of your boat. For an electric winch, I recommend Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch # BDW15020 which has a 4,400 lb rating and will work really well for your application. It includes a 50' long x 1/4" (6 mm) diameter rope with a convenient hand held water proof remote. The only hand winch I recommend for the weight of your boat...

  • Hand Winch for Ez Loader Boat Trailer Loaded with 1999 Sea Ray Sun Deck 210
There is a general rule of thumb used when choosing a hand winch for a boat trailer. If the trailer has wooden or carpeted bunks, you will want a winch whose capacity is about half the weight of the boat. If you have bunk rollers on your trailer, your winch capacity should be at least 1/3 of the weight of the boat. According to my research, the dry weight of your boat is somewhere around 3500 lbs, which means that the Fulton 2-Speed Winch you mention would have more than enough capacity...

  • Trailer Winch Recommendation for 35 ft Fountain on Boat Trailer with Wooden Bunks
The best 2 speed hand winch we offer for a boat trailer setup like yours with wooden bunks pulling in a boat that weighs 8,500 lbs is the Fulton 2 Speed winch part # F142430 which also has a hand brake to help when letting the boat out when launching. This has a 3,700 lb capacity as well and for a cable the part # FWC7500100 would work great as well.

  • Replacement For 3,200 lb Shelby 5480A Winch
To replace your Shelby 5480A 2-speed winch with one that can be used in the manner you specified, it sounds like you need one with a handbrake. Since you also require one with cable and at least 3,200 lbs, the closest option is the Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch with Handbrake - Cable Only - Zinc - 3,700 lbs # F142430.

  • Boat Trailer Winch that Has Capacity for 18,000 lb Boat
With boat winches you generally only need 50 percent of the boats weight as the winch's weight capacity. So for a 18,000 lb boat like you have you'd need a winch with at least a 9,000 lb capacity. For that we have the Fulton XLT Powered Winch part # F500621 which has a 10,000 lb capacity and would be your best option. The strap is only 15 feet long though so you'd need to make sure you could get the boat within 15 feet from being fully on the trailer.

  • Necessary Winch Capacity for 5600 lb 25ft Baha Boat on Float-On Trailer
Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is that the capacity of your winch should be half the weight of your boat. If you are winching for a short distance, and you have good rollers on your trailer, you can get by with a winch capacity that is 1/3 the weight of the boat. On the other hand, if you are winching long distances with bare wooden bunks with no carpet or rollers at all, you will need a winch capacity equal to the weight of your boat. • Wire Length and Diameter Wire Cable for Fulton F142430 2 Speed Trailer Winch
The Fulton # F142430 two speed trailer winch can accommodate 185 feet of 7/32 cable. Fulton didn't have information regarding how long of a piece of 5/32 cable the winch could carry, but since the cable you're asking about is smaller in diameter, it would certainly be safe to say the spool could accommodate at least 185 feet of it, if not more. The longest winch cable we offer is part # FWC7500100 which is 50 feet of 7/32 inch cable.

  • What is the Weight Capacity of the Fulton Winch # F142430 With Drum Full of Cable
I spoke with my contact at Fulton who said that at one layer the weight capacity of the Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch # F142430 is 3,700 lbs. The only other weight capacity that he could tell me is that with 140' of the 7/32" cable, like the 50' # FWC7500100 you referenced, wound all the way up the weight capacity will be reduced to 1,500 lbs. Anything between that would be unknown and you would just have to subtract about 10% of the weight capacity for each layer after...

  • Winch Recommendation for 10,000 lb Boat
The best option we carry for a 10,000 lb boat is the Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch # F142430 which has a 3,700 lb capacity with Cable # FWC7500100. The winch to boat size capacity is 2-to-1 though it can also be 3-to-1 if you have really good rollers and are not using the winch for much distance. So if you have those conditions this winch will be able to pull a 10,000 lb boat. I have added a link to a video review of this winch for you to take a look at.

  • Recommended Winch for Pontoon Boat Trailer
Pontoon boats, particularly those that are up to 25' in length, can be heavy, so I recommend a heavy-duty boat winch, the 3,600 lb Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch with Handbrake # F142430. This is a 2-speed winch and als has a hand brake which gives you optimal control over your winching. It does use a cable only, and the correct one is the Fulton Galvanized Winch Cable with Hook # FWC7500100. I have added links to video reviews of the winch and cable for you to check out.

  • Recommendation for Replacement Shelby 5470A Winch with Large Drum Storage Capacity
You are correct that Shelby is no longer in business. Based on my research it looks like your Shelby 5470A is a 2,800 pound hand winch. I wasn't able to locate the drum capacity on the 5470A but the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440 that you mentioned can store up to 30 feet of 3/8 inch cable. The guideline when selecting a winch is to weigh the boat when it is fully loaded and ready to travel with supplies, gas, etc. Then, take the gross weight and divide by 1.5, which will tell you the capacity winch you will need. You will want to weigh your boat with it loaded like you were going on a boat outing. The included article on hand winches has lots of helpful information that will guide you. Even if you had a very short winching distance without much incline and were using rollers, the hand winch that has the most capacity, the 3,700 lb Fulton High-Performance 2-Speed Trailer Winch with Handbrake # F142430, would be pushing it because each layer of the...

  • Brake Winch Recommendation for Trailer with Roller Bunks to Feed Boat Out Onto Water
Your best option would be a winch that can be fed out when you are launching your boat so that you don't have to just let it free wheel and take off in to the water by itself. For that the Fulton hand winch part # F142430 that has a hand brake would be a fantastic option. It would let you feed the winch out as needed in a controlled manner and won't require you to swap out the rollers of your trailer for bunks. For a cable you'd then want the part # FWC7500100.
