How to Estimate Trailer Weight Capacity Based on Axle Dimensions

Question:

I dont know much about my trailer other than it a 5 by 10 tilt bed that had some iffy stuff done to it before I owned it but is it a good idea to put a 3,500 pound winch on the front of the trailer?

Well, that's a good question.

Before you install any weight-bearing item on your 5 x 10 tilt trailer, such as a winch or jack, I do suggest checking the trailer VIN sticker or the identification tag on the axle itself for a weight capacity. Things can get kind of sketchy when trailers are modified. If the trailer has had previous owners that made changes it can be tough to determine weight capacity. If you can find the axle rating that will give you a good starting basis for estimating how much winch capacity it can handle.

You can bring it by a local trailer supply shop for a look, or you can send us some photos of it. We won't be able to give you an exact figure for its capacity but we can probably help you get reasonably close. Axle diameter often gets you in the ballpark as far as weight rating goes. You can refer to the linked article on trailer suspensions to see typical weight capacities for various axle sizes.
