I selected this winch based on rating, brand and features. The US based manufacture Dutton-Lainson did it right by posting on-line videos on the features-effective. I didn't find any product failures complaints on-line. However -one thing that made me little leary was DL didn't list the warranty explict to this product on their web site. I went on reviews and info alone. Only later did I learn that it has a x YEAR warranty!! WOW! etrailer made a good decision to carry this product. The retailer is also has a lot of resources where I can look up information on what i needed to suit my needs. I went cost effect before---but I rethought this and now I would rather pay more than risk my car projects or anyone's safety.

I bought a dutton lainson 2500 lb winch along with tires & wheels & weld on spindles to build a dump trailer for my atv . I spent last winter building it to work like a small dump truck with spreader chains and all . Here are some pictures of the finished product.

Super fast shipping. Was able to track the same day. Product is very high quality. Every thing you need is here.

I received the winch in good order. The shipping took less time than I thought. I am looking forward to many years of usage on my log arch.

  • What Determines a Hand Winch Minimum Operating Weight and Can it Be Modified/Lowered
I reached out to my contact at Dutton-Lainson and confirmed there is not a way to reduce the minimum operating weight required. Both the # DL15761 and the # DL14964 use the same brake pad and washer. However, # DL15761 (2,500 lbs) is physically bigger/heavier than # DL14964 (1,500 lbs) and uses two drive shafts instead of just one like the smaller winch. That is a big part of why it has the heavier weight requirement and heavier weight capacity. An even better solution for you than either...

  • How To Unwind Dutton Lainson Hand Winch DL15721
The Dutton Lainson Hand Winch, model # DL15721 does not feature a free-wheel option. The handle can be turned counter clockwise to unwind the cable or strap. If the minimum operating weight (175 lbs) is not applied, the winch handle will become loose and unscrew from the bolt that holds it in place. We actually get a lot of questions about this. So, when trying to unwind the winch, you just want to make sure that the minimum weight is on the winch and it will allow you to operate it in...

  • How Many Dutton-Lainson 2500lb Hand Winches Are There?
    We have quite a few different Dutton-Lainson hand winches that have a 2500lb capacity. Here are the options: Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - Left Side Handle - 2,500 lbs # DL15403 Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2,500 lbs-Right Side # DL15721 Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2,500 lbs-Right Side # DL10786 Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2,500 lbs-...

  • What is Dutton-Lainson TUFFPLATE Finish
TUFFPLATE is the special finish Dutton-Lainson uses on their products like the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake - TUFFPLATE Finish - Freewheel - 2,500 lbs # DL15761. This is a zinc plated finish which is three times more corrosion resistant when compared to standard zinc plating and 30% greater when compared to powder coat finish. According to their testing, the TUFFPLATE finish provides in excess of 100 hours before the first white corrosion and 500 hours before red rust forms....

  • Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Compatibility With Drill Drive Socket Adapter
The Dutton-Lainson # DL6456 Drill Drive Socket Adapter is only compatible with DLB series brake winches, so it wouldn't work with the # DL14730 winch you'd mentioned. Dutton-Lainson offers a 2500 lb capacity winch as part # DL15761 which is closest in capacity to the 2K winch you were looking at, which is compatible with the socket adapter. The nice thing about a brake winch is it automatically applies the brake when you stop cranking the handle but with the flip of a lever, you can play...

  • Availability of Dutton Lainson Freewheel Brake Winch and Ratchet Handle for DLB-Series Winch
We do sell the Dutton-Lainson Freewheel Brake Winch # DL15761. This winch combines the best of both worlds, allowing you to lift the latch so the gears can freespool or secure the handle with the latch to engage the brake. The ratcheting handle for that winch is the DLB Series Brake Winch Ratcheting Replacement Handle # DL70347. Mounting the winch as you have described will require a custom base, we do not have any winch bases that fit your description, and will need to be secured mounted...

  • How Does The Automatic Brake Function In The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Operate?
The brake on the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15761 is automatic. It has both a friction brake as well as a mechanical brake. When winding in the winch cable in you will hear a sharp clicking noise of the winch locking into position. To release cable with a load you will simply wind the handle in reverse. The handle will overcome the friction braking force and release the mechanical brake to allow you to release cable from the drum slowly. When you stop turning the winch handle the friction...

  • Can Dutton-Lainson DLB2505A Freewheel Brake Winch be Used with a Strap
I checked with Dutton-Lainson and they do show that up to a 21 foot strap can be used with winch # DL15761. For a strap you can use # DL24251.

  • Recommended Winch to Pull Kayaks and Canoes Up 5 Foot Embankment Onto Trailer
For the type of application you described I recommend going with a highly-rated brake winch that's designed more for vertical lifting such as the excellent Dutton-Lainson # DL15761. This particular winch features a 2,500 pound weight capacity and an automatic braking mechanism that locks the load in place to help with pulling the canoes and kayaks up a steep embankment. It also has a freewheel lever that lets you easily feed the cable out manually. I have attached the written manual/instructions...

  • How Does The Brake On the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake # DL15761 Operate?
The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake # DL15761 has a nut on the crank handle shaft that prevents it from coming off the winch. As you turn the handle in reverse it will look like the handle is moving away from the main body of the winch as it is releasing tension on the pressure plate of the brake. The spring between the nut and the handle maintains pressure for the handle against the pressure plate when you are not turning the handle.
