How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Description of the product was very good. Product quality is very good. This jack was easy to install

by:

Installed today to replace the original on my Ranger RT188 trailer. A much more substantial and quality jack than the original. Did need to use longer bolts on the welded frame plate but very happy with the Fulton. Next upgrade will be the Fulton enclosed winch. Thanks Etrailer for a quality product and quick shipping.

by:

Fits perfectly on my 2015 Ranger RT188 trailer. Much better than the one that originally came with the trailer.

by:

All products were exactly as described. Shipping was fast.

by:

etrailer offered accurate specs and good selection. Jack was delivered fast and fits Ranger RT188 trailer. Well built, easy to install. Great product.

by:

Exactly as dedscribed!

Overall I've been quite happy with this trailer jack. The adjustability is what had me sold - I was able to set it at the perfect height to get my trailer on the hitch, whereas with the old unit I had to jack up the trailer slightly, or run a really high ball height. Two minor niggles with the unit are that the handle holder slips off when driving, and that the optional wedge kit doesn't hold the trailer very well. I'd give it a 4.5 overall.

Its been another year, and the jack is still working perfectly. Its lived outside all year and shows no signs of corrosion. I do need to pull it off at some point and tighten the bolts that cinch up the pivot mechanism, as its developed a little bit of play there.

by:

This comes with a different ubolt then other f2’s I have bought and it does not come in original box. Makes we question of these are rebuilt or fakes.

The Fulton jacks that we carry are from Fulton. This jack works with frames that are 4 to 5 inches and the u bolts will be a little bigger. Sometimes the boxes from the manufacturer end up in rough shape and the jacks needs to be repackaged. If there is any damage please let us know.

by:

My Fulton jack lasted less than a year and quit working. It would not go up or down granted I use it in salt water however it should last more than a year at over $XXX. I was forced to replace it again with the same jack because it is custom fitted to my Skeeter trailer.

by:

This jack is sturdier than the one that came with my boat trailer. If you need to move your trailer in close quarters, I would wholeheartedly recommend this jack. The wide wheel makes turning a breeze. And the gear ratio of the crank makes cranking the trailer up or down a simple chore.

The trailer jack is working out fine. However, since the boat and trailer are kept outside there is a little rust forming. It doesnt compromise the function its a cosmetic issue. Other than that it does what it was made to do which is a sturdier trailer jack.

by:

I bought this so I could strap launch my sailboat off a ramp. The boat weighs and trailer weigh 8500 lbs together so there's about 900 lbs on the tongue and I needed a super strong jack to support that while we rolled it down the ramp and this jack does a great job with that. The way I use this wheel is probably harder on it than how most people use it and I haven't had a problem. I would buy it again. Video of our launch procedures can be found

by:

We bought two of these heavy trailer jack wheels. I am a service plumber & contractor. The tongue weight of the trailer is heavy, especially if it is loaded with tools, lumber or snakes & sewer equipment. These units are well built and do an outstanding job of keeping the load off of our employee's backs while making it easy to hitch, unhitch & roll the trailer around on our black top driveway.

by:

Great Trailer Jack's, the Fulton F2 series. I installed this one on my boat trailer. It was a direct replacement. Unbolted the old one and with the supplied "u" bolts the project took 5 minutes. The F2's are more expensive than others but they operate so smoothly and the large tire make it easy to swing the trailer tongue in any direction.

by:

Ordered one of these for my Ranger RT188 after seeing lots of good reviews on the BBC Boards! Item came with a couple scratches but I'm sure it will get more so I didn't worry about it too much. Everyone at etrailer was great! Called to verify as my shipping address is different than billing, I appreciated that. I had email updates right up until the item arrived. I love the jack and will do business with E-Trailer again in the future.

by:

Put this jack on my Ranger rt188. The jack that came on the boat was the typical junk that skips and the wheel won’t turn. This jack is the real deal. Heavy duty and the wheel goes where you tell it to go. Absolutely the best jack I have ever had on my boat. I have had 7 boats. All will have this jack on them going forward.

by:

This is a really good quality jack, very sturdy even extended under load from the tongue weight of a 21' Jet boat. I bought it to replace a jack that I feared would end up failing and crushing my foot when moving around on the concrete floor. This jack will not allow that. The customer service at Etrailer was just as good, in fact I called to ask some questions about a wheel lock and ordered over the phone after viewing online.

by:

If you trailer your boat more than average, this is the jack for you!

by:

Couple of ttyhings. Seems to be a lot of play between wheel hub and axle bolt, installing a bushing might help or manufacturing tolerances tightened up. Also might be a good idea to put a grease fitting in center of wheel hub.

by:

As advertised and works perfect. Shipped the night I ordered it and arrived with the trailer jack. I highly recommend this brake with the Fulton trailer jack. Great product and great service. In the future I will do all of my trailer shopping on etrailer.
They exceeded my expectations!

by:

Read on the Bass Boat Central forum that this was the jack to get for the new boat and trailer I'm buying. Wow, were they right. This thing is solidly built with a large diameter and width wheel. It is exactly as advertised and came within a couple days of ordering it. Etrailer actually shipped it the night I ordered it! Awesome product and great service. I will shop here again for all my trailer needs.

by:

I tried to purchase this product 3 times. No one explained that there was different model numbers for different applications. etrailer was a big help. They took the time and looked up the right product information for my application. thank-you

by:

I have been wanting to put this on my boat trailer for a couple years, finally made the purchase. Received in a very timely manner and love the beefiness of the unit. Only issue I was missing a lock washer and nut in the hardware package. I have to run to hardware store and find something.

by:

The staff at etrailer are great. We had a urgent need to get our trailer able survey boat to project site and realized the trailer was in need of repair when we trailered the boat. I called etrailer and they had all the parts needed and was able to ship quickly to us. The parts fit and work great. Thanks a lot!

by:

Sturdy, Quality product. Looks great too. very easy to crank. Bracket was larger than my trailer arm depth wise, so I stuck a piece of wood in there to tighten it up. Im very happy.

by:

Great product, just mounted it on the trailer. You guy's are great to order from, only place I go for my boat trailer parts.

It sounds like your trailer jack was a custom installation. We do not offer a jack that is designed to be mounted like you described. The jacks we have are either a bolt-on or they have a plate that can be welded to the trailer frame. • Replacing Jack on Trailer with Fulton F2
Hey William, Fulton doesn't have an extensive line of adapter to allow their F2 jacks to attach onto other mounting brackets so what is most likely your best option would be to go with an F2 that you'd find the easiest to install. You could go with a weld-on like the part # F1413050334 or one that comes with u-bolts like the part # F1413140334. You can still email me the pictures of your mount though and I can take a look.

  • How To Mount Fulton F2 Trailer Jack F1413140334 To Trailer W/ 6" Tall Frame
I wish there was such an adapter, but there is not any sort of adapter to allow a trailer jack like the Fulton F2 # F1413140334 you purchased to be bolted on to your trailer frame since it is 6" tall. Your only option will be drilling holes and directly bolting the jack to the frame, though you will want to check with the manufacturer of your trailer first as drilling holes may void the frame warranty of your trailer. I included a video of the # F1413140334 for you to take a look at.
