Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

This wheel was purchased as a spare tire for my boat trailer for future use it is mounted on the trailer at this time so I’m unable to make a comment on its actual use

As I mentioned in the first post I use this tite as a spare for my boat it’s still mounted on the boat trailer so it’s never been used

by:

Tire has had a slow leak since purchase. Needs to be filled every other week, or prior to taking out the boat trailer

Oh, I am sorry to hear that. This should not be something you have to deal with. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to look into a warranty. It seems that this wheel has a limited 2-year warranty; and the tire has a 5-year warranty. If you have pictures of where the leak is, that would be helpful for issuing the warranty.

by:

The price was decent. The tires came as advertised. The wheels came with imperfections.

by:

Received tires in good time, galvanized rims looked great, and fit the boat trailer perfectly

by:

Ordered the Loadstar ST205/75D14 trailer tires and galvanized wheels for my boat trailer. They arrived within one week and they look great. Much cheaper than sourcing them locally. Will try to update the post after a few months of use. So far I’m very satisfied.

by:

I've been boating for the better part of 20 years and for the majority of that time I've made most purchases at local marinas and shops. When I did a simple search for a common tire I was amazed by the difference in price between my local shop and etrailer.com. The reviews looked were overwhelmingly positive so I went for it. I was absolutely amazed by the service, price and incredibly fast delivery time. Also, the tracking system was another major factor in making me feel very comfortable with etrailer.com. I'm back on the site tonight to purchase yet another tire as a spare because the other two look so good!! etrailer... you've earned my business and my trust!

by:

Tires are great! The rims are like a foil overlay but still look better than the rust buckets I had on there before! There are a great value and I got 4 tires for what I would have paid for two at a local shop. If you have every changed a tire, you can install these yourself. They come balanced.

Tires and rims still going strong! The foil overlay on the rims have completely worn off but I didnt get them to be pretty. These are a great value, super pleased still after a year!

by:

Bought for our travel trailer. Galvanized looks nice on the trailer. Were cheaper than the white rims, but still great quality. Tires are really nice as well. They came in in their own boxes. They arrived in good shape. I will definately be back when I need tires for my car trailer! Love the service and fast shipping. Was not my first time ordering with etrailer, and won't be my last! Great quality stuff. Best prices around!

by:

Exactly as expected. This is my third order of wheels and tires, and is as good as the previous. Delivery time was excellent.

by:

I recently ordered a trailer tire with rim and ordered the wrong size tire. I called customer service and Diana answered. Diana was a pleasure to deal with and solved my problem with no hassles. She also mentioned that she enjoyed customer service work and etrailer fostered excellent customer service.

by:

Bottom line- everything was exceptional from initial ordering and unbelievably fast delivery. Fastest delivery I have ever had and the tire were of exceptional quality too. E trailer has showed me they are the top in customer service and business. Thanks h by the way the price was exceptional too!!

The tires have preformed flawlessly in the year since I bought them no sure I even see tire wear. I use the boat trailer in saltwater and the complete tire and rim are still newer looking. Great, great value from a great provider.

by:

Fast shipping, exactly what I expected. Great packaging. This tire looks durable and is an exact replacement of the previous one I had.

by:

Excellent service and a great price.
Wasn’t
sure about putting galvanized rims on my camper but these aren’t dull and look better to me than the stock white rims, tires have an awesome shine as well.

by:

This is da reel deal. We like dis thang. It werk goo. Git you 1 of disease,

by:

Received the wheel and tire within 2 days of ordering with free shipping. Tested to confirm that it fit the trailer and had it installed on the spare bracket quickly. Great option for a spare tire.

by:

The tires n wheels were for my boat trailer. They are excellent. I use my boat all the time. I take it regularly to my favorite lake in East Texas, a 400 mile round trip. Thanks for you great service

by:

Ordered spare tire and wheel for our boat everything matched perfectly and arrived one day earlier than expected. Couldn't be happier

by:

Purchased as a spare for my boat trailer. It's exactly the same tire as what came on it. These are Chinese so not a top brand, but the original tires have held up well for a year now. I check to be sure they're aired up before every trip and I believe it helps mitigate the blow outs you read about online. Hopefully I won't ever need to use it, but if I do and have any problems I'll come back and update this review. BTW.... eTrailer delivered this a day early. I have nothing by good experiences with them.

by:

Tires and rims look good. Short delivery time.

by:

I love this company fast delivery great product. I’ve had to change all four tires on my trailer recently as they were getting old and got them all from E trailer.

by:

E trailer has very competitive prices and well organized website makes picking the appropriate tire/wheel at this time easy and delivery was fast. Thank you.

by:

Ordered 4 wheels and tires for my boat trailer, got today and put 2 on when I got finished training at the Vol. Fire Department. Look great. Best price for hard to find items. Easy and actually surprised for an old school guy. So far, really happy and will definitely use in the future... Chief Mack

by:

What I think is the LoadStar tires that were on our trailer for many years prior to this purchase where built to a higher quality than the Load Range C specification. However, the ones I received a year ago were NOT and didn't last past the first two months. One went flat on our May trip and the second on the June trip. However, I'm happy with etrailer's customer service as I was provided with Load Range D tires replacements and so far they are still good today. Our first long trip will not be until June this year. Fingers crossed, they'll be fine. However, I did purchase a second spare tire bracket for peace of mind.

by:

They arrived a day earlier than I expected, that was great. Not having to pay for any shipping, was the best part.

by:

Absolutely Outstanding in service, delivery and quality. Ease of navigating the website is free of any difficulty. Definitely top tier company!

  • Replacing H78-14B Trailer Tires on a Triad Boat Trailer
There are a couple of different size modern equivalents to the 78-14 tire size. But for an H78-14, you would need to use an ST215/75-14, see link. If you just want tires, we have bias tire # AM1ST90 and for a radial we have # AM10229. Make sure not to mix radial and bias tires for best performance and longest life of the tires. I have also included a link to our tire FAQ article for you.

Great news! I can help you find replacement tires for your existing boat trailer tires. Thanks to the information you provided from your tires, I was able to determine your tires are size H78-14 special trailer tires. This is an older trailer tire size, so for the current sizing system you will want a ST215/75-14 size tire. Our most popular ST215/75-14 size tire is the Taskmaster ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire, Load Range D # TTWTRTM2157514D. This radial tire is a great option for your...

What's great about the Taskmaster tires is that they are rated for higher speeds at 81 mph whereas most are only rated for 65. The tire has a ply rating of 6 and a 1,760-lb max load at 50 psi as well.

  • Karrier ST205/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire, part # AM32156 Recommendation for Boat 4200 lb w/ Trailer
The main difference between a radial ply and bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords underneath the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees from direction of travel, or across the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve...

These radial tires will give you a similar dimension to your 7.4 x 14 tires with an 8 inch width. These tires will fit on 14 x 5, 14 x 5.5, 14 x 6 and 14 x 6.5 inch wheels. The "D" in the ST205/75D14 stands for a bias tire, which is mainly used for agricultural applications and is not a great replacement for general driving. Yes, tire and wheel combo # AM3S450 will fit your 2010 Trailmaster boat trailer. This is basically an exact match for what you have. The D in the size (ST205/75D14) indicates a bias ply tire. If there was an R instead of a D that would indicate a radial tire. You always want the all the tires on a trailer to be the same construction type, either all bias or all radial. If you did end up needed a radial you would want tire and wheel combo # AM32156.

  • Do Trailer Wheels And Tires Require Balancing?
Our trailer tire and wheel packages do not come balanced as they do not require it. Trailer wheel and tires are designed to support heavy loads and generally not looked at for a smooth vibration free ride. That is the same reason you virtually never see shocks on a trailer. Vehicles that carry passengers will have the wheels balanced to provide a smooth ride for the passengers inside the vehicle as well as provide a smoother ride for the suspension and steering components. Since trailers...

  • Matching Radial or Bias Tires on a Trailer
You will always want the tire size, load range, and construction, to match on your trailer. Using tires that are different can lead to more of a load being put on the smaller size tire/tires and cause tire problems to occur. In your case the tire size (ST205/75-14) is the same but the tire construction is different. With different tire construction the radial tire would run cooler than the bias ply tire and the tracking of the trailer would also be different with the two different tires....
