Video Transcript for Thule Hitch Bike Racks 853-5829 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number 853-5829. This is the Two Lead Replacent T3 Cradle Body for Thule bike racks. The T3 cradle body is going to slide onto one of the support arms of your bike rack and it's going to provide an anchor point for your bike frame. See here it's got the nice little indentions in there. That's going allow and cables that you may have running under your bike frame to sit in there nicely without causing any type of damage to the cables or to the frame of your bike. This unit's going to replace one worn out or damaged cradle body for Thule bike racks with one inch diameter arms. That's going to be the diameter of this central hole here.

It is going to require a rubber strap, part number 753-3535 to secure the bike. That's going to be sold separately. One end of the strap's going to secure in the indention right here. Then it's going to come over the actual cradle body. Then it's going to have holes in the strap that are going to loop around one of the two provided anchors there for the strap.

Again, this is designed for bike racks with one inch diameter arms. Bike racks that this would work with are going to be the Thule Ridgeline, the Thule Roadway, the Thule Revolver and the Thule Spare Me bike racks. Nice rubber construction here on the internal component that slides over the bike rack arm. That's going to provide that nice, tight, secure fit. Again, you've got the rubber pad right here to comfort the frame of the bicycle. Few measurements to go over with you real quick.

I want to measure the length of the rubber pad going this direction. That's going to give us a measurement of about 2 and 13/16ths of an inch. If I measured going this way, just measuring this center section here that rubber pad we're going to be looking at about 1 and 5/8ths of an inch. That's going to do it for our review of part number 853-5829. This is the Thule Replacement T3 Cradle Body for Thule bike racks.

Installed the spare parts today. Excellent results.
I had an old Bell Bike Rack with broken clips and replaced them with these. Perfect fit, a very nice upgrade. You definitely have to use soap to get them on the bar (unless you're a masochist).

Chris,How did you remove the end caps on your rack. The saddles on my rack are doing the same thing. Thanks,Keitho

Chris O.

8/18/2014

Keitho - On my rack there are screws on the underside of the end caps. Once you remove the screws they slide off easily.

by:

SERVICE WAS GREAT, even though my rack is an older model, I was happy to find the spare parts…. Only issue was I thought
The prices were a little steep

by:

Cradle is exact fit for my rack. However the
two cradles seem slightly used. Am thinking they could be returns. Would like to get etrailers opinion.

Purchased this as a replacement cradle set on my older bike rack the actual replacement was discontinued and was told that this item would work. It turns out this works a lot better than the original one that came with the rack i may replace all the cradles with this type.
Center cradles in the images are the new ones.
Thanks good quality parts, very satisfied. Mario

by:

I received the straps and the cradles quickly. They fit my Bell 3 carrier bike rack which I converted to a 2 carrier bike rack. They are difficult to screw on so I ended up spraying a little WD40 on the posts. I ended up with a blister but it was worth the end result. Thanks!!!

by:

Replaced the broken cradle parts on my old Bell bike rack. Out with the old, in with the new. Fits perfect!

by:

Ordered new saddles for my 10yr old bike rack. Ordering simple and easy and came within 3 days, right to my back door

by:

Wanted to have a bike rack to use for working on the bikes. Fabricated this to fit on my table saw.

by:

I bought these to replace old velcro pieces on an old Bell bike rack that is still in good shape except for the tie-downs. These needed a tad WD40 to slip on, but fit perfectly (1 inch diameter tube). They are super strong and padded! I'm a fan!

by:

This item saved me from replacing my trunk mount bike rack. I have a Thule three bike rack with cheap plastic bike holders that are made exclusively for straight tube men's bikes, not girls frames or mountain bikes, so I broke all six bike holders within the first year. Of course, Thule will sell you, for $28 ea., bars to make other frames fit, but that would be more than I paid for the rack. These replacements are exactly what should have come on the Thule rack. I secure my bikes with Velcro straps rated at 200lbs from Amazon. Etrailer was fast in shipping these out and is a great company to do business with.

These are holding up great and I use them 2-3 times a week regularly and even more when I ride on the weekends. I would recommend these to people buying Thule trunk bike racks to use them from the start and avoid the frustration of what comes with your bike rack. I have recommended then to friends and strangers when I see them with the crap the Thule puts on their racks. I also like that Etrailer asked how I was doing after a year. This is a first rate company that I will look to before others when shopping for trailer needs.

by:

Replaced my worn cradles and straps from my older Thule bike rack. They fit much tighter and your idea of using a paper towel with dish detergent helped them slide easier. Plan on buying two more since they work great and bikes won't slide on the tubular frame of theThule. It's so nice to able to buy replacement parts for our bike racks or whatever. Thanks again and your website is super,

Mike L.

Great,no problems

by:

Did not fit - poor description on website. Customer service less than helpful. Look elsewhere.

by:

I put 2 of these and 2 straps (#753-3535) on an old Graber bike rack. Make sure the diameters of the cradle and the rack arm match (in this case 1 inch), and that the cradle is perpendicular to the arm. It was easier and a cheaper than getting a new rack. These parts outclass the rack. etrailer was great too.

It takes more than a year for these part to wear out.

by:

Perfect replacement for the saddle on my ten year old Thule bike rack. The two piece (separate cradle and strap) looks a little different that the original but it looks and works fine. Quick service and great price.

Jeff

Still working fine after a year despite heavy use.

by:

I purchased a used Thule Bike rack a a thrift store and replaced the straps. I spent under $[XX] and elbow grease for a $[XX] bike rack.

by:

I installed the bike saddles and straps on my bike carrier and they work as expected. Had to grease the bike carrier tube with Vasoline so the saddle would slide on. It would have been helpful if this was mentioned as a tip for installation.

You bring up an excellent point, Jim. Normally, we recommend soap and water to install the replacement cradles.

This product works as advertised, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone needing replacements or to use on a third party Bike carrier

Love the product in fact have recommended your products to several friends.

by:

After 19 years the original cradle bodies on my Thule Spare Me (spare tire) bike rack began to liquify. These T2 replacement parts fit and work perfectly. Hpoefully, I can squeeze a couple more years out of the car and rack. (I had to let some WD-40 soak into the rusty screws that hold the end caps in place. This took a couple of days.)

by:

Much better than the originals, straps are not so rigid and easier to tie down the bikes in a secure manner.

Michael

by:

Our family is very happy with these bike bracket holders. One year later, they are holding up just like new.

Hi, and thanks for writing! I havent used the Thule much this year, but it is still in perfect working condition, and I am very happy with it! I am grateful that etrailer.com supplied it and for a reasonable price, too.

by:

Product was purchased to replace worn units on a rack that was given to me. They are much nicer than the one being replaced. Shipping was quick and was given updates on any changes. Would order from again.

Steve B.

10/25/2017

They are holding up fine. Thanks for asking.

by:

Cradle is working very well on our bike rack. I am pleased with the product does as advertised. I would purchase the cradle again if needed.

John N.

6/13/2017

Product works very well with my bike carrier would purchase again

by:

My bicycle shop told me these parts are no longer available from the manufacturer, Thule. The salesman said my only real option is to buy a new bike rack for over $400.

I found these parts and many others on etrailer.com. They were very reasonably priced. In addition, I found new bike racks for about half the price my bike store charged.

The parts I received were exactly what I ordered and fit perfectly. In the future, I will always buy from etrailer.com.

by:

The product is fine, but does not fit the Rola bike rack I bought from etrailer. The cradles on the Rola were too narrow for my road bike, so I looked for a replacement cradle. I found this recommendation below from a supposed etrailer expert under the Rola replacement cradle. Unfortunately the Rola rack has 1 1/8 inch tubes, so Thule does not fit. When I tried to return, etrailer refused. Make sure you know exactly what you want before ordering anything from etrailer-- it is either very expensive to return with shipping and restocking, or they might refuse the return altogether for lower priced items. I thought their customer service was better than this...

There are other cradles sized for 1 inch arm tubes. You could swap out for Thule T3 cradles and straps, parts 853-5829 and 753-3535. You could also use the Thule Stapy-Put cradle and strap, parts 853-7887 and 853-5834. You can even add an anti-sway cradle to the Stay-Put, and that is part 853-7758.

For your Thule Spare Me bike carrier part # TH963XTR the correct replacement strap is the part # 753-3535 and then for the replacement cradle you'd want the part # 853-5829. The two Thule cradles we have that will fit onto a 1" arm (Stay-Put Cradle # 853-7887 and T2 Cradle Body # 853-5829 which would need the # 753-3535 strap to go with it) will have 1-3/4" of space at their widest points. This is fairly standard and it does cause some problems with bikes that have wider/larger top tubes. With that said, you may need to upgrade to a platform style rack that tightens down on the wheels (you do not want a frame mount style as it can damage the carbon fiber frame)....
