Troubeshooting Uneven Tension on Curt Weight Distribution System # 17302
Question:
I saw a question about passenger side of curt wd hitch having more tension than drivers side. I have the same problem plus the clip on top that you lift to put the trunion bar in pops out when I back my trailer in. The last time it popped out, the trunion bar fell out on the ground. It makes a loud pop when it comes out. so far Ive been lucky on finding this clip on the ground. 17302 is my hitch model. Any suggestions ?

I spoke with my contact at Curt and he said a couple of things could cause the uneven tension on your Curt weight distribution system # 17302. First make sure you are on even ground when you set up your system and not on an incline or that your trailer is crooked. Next, make sure you have the same number of links in on both sides of the system, with a minimum of five links.
You can test the tension in the system by taking the chains off your system an d lifting the bars until you feel tension. If the bars are at different heights when you feel tension then you have a problem with the head, casting or knuckle. You will then want to check the angle of the head.
If, when backing up, you are turning too sharply, you could be putting too much pressure on the mounting brackets and this could cause the pin to pop out. Putting that much pressure on the brackets is not recommended.
