How To Wire In a 7-way to Replace a Boat Trailer 5-Way Flat

Question:

I have a 5-way flat with 7 wires going into it White, Brown, Brown, Yellow, Green, Red, Red on my boat trailer with brakes. I would like to replace the 5-way flat with a 7-way plug to fit directly to my vehicle without having to use an adapter. My question is, can I use this plug H20046? And if so, how do I connect my current wires to the new 7-way plug? Im confused with what to do with my 2 red wires and 2 brown wires. Also, do I even use the black power wire coming from the 7-way? Thanks for your help!

You definitely could install the 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20046 in place of the 5-way that is installed on your trailer currently. The colors wouldn't match up exactly. White would go to white, you would run both brown wires to the single green wire of the 7-way. Yellow of your trailer would go to the red wire of the 7-way, and green of the trailer wiring would go to brown of the 7-way.

Now without knowing where the red wires of the 5-way go it's hard to say for certain. You will need to trace them back and see where they go. If they are brakes (most likely not) you would run both wires to the blue wire of the 7-way. If it's for a 12 volt power you would want the black wire of the 7-way. If it's any other circuit it would run to the yellow wire.

Check out the chart I attached as well.
