Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins 7-Way Blade to 6-Way Round Pin Wiring Adapter - 47549

Jeff: Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Hopkins seven way blade to six way round adapter. Now this adapter will plug into your vehicle's side seven way blade socket, and it converts your connector format to a six way round pin type. You can see it has this nice tethered dust cap on it, then when it's not plugged in, you can protect the terminals. Now, one note on this adapter, the center pin is set up as the more common 12 volt hot lead, but it can easily be changed to work with trailers and will have the center pin wired as the brake. And to do that, what you'll first want to do is you'll need a circuit tester to test the pins in your six way connector. Basically just ground the alligator clip to the vehicle chassis, and then touch the test light to the center pin on your six way connector.

If the light and the tester lights up, then that means the center pin is hot so it's wired for 12 volts. So you can use it as-is.If the center pin is for the brakes, it'll only have power when your brake pedal is applied or when the manual brake lever on the brake controller is activated. So if it does work that way, you need to switch it. You can easily do that. What you'll want to do if you need to switch it, all you have to do is switch the blue and the black wires that are inside this adapter.

So what you'll do is basically just remove this tethered dust cap, and then if you'll notice right here, there's two screws here and then two right up here. If you just unscrew all four of those screws, this'll split in half, in the inside you'll be able to see where the black wire is attached to the center pin. And then you also see a blue wire, all you have to do is just switch the black and the blue wire, attach them back down, put your screws in. Go ahead and put your dust cap back on, and just like that you're ready to go. So it's pretty easy to switch between the two.But that should do it for the review on the Hopkins seven way blade to six way round adapter..

We had been having trouble with our other adapters, no brakes or intermittent brakes. This adapter fits better than any of the others ever have, great connection and is holding tight. I will be picking up some more of these. The only downside to me was they came on the value shipping which is rather delayed for us and I would rather pay to get it here more quickly. I was needing it and it was several days getting here. We ship a lot and I know shipping directly with USPS goes faster than that and is not expensive.

It works just like new! No complaints at all. I noticed another review stated theirs is not fitting, sometimes the pins can get a little distorted on the vehicle side and can be easily straightened.

Added the gooseneck trailer plug in bed and I wanted to be compatible with new and old style plugs. Adapor worked great.

The trailer light adapter has worked just fine. I only use it periodically, but when I have, done the job!!! Thanks for checking on it!

by:

I unplugged the broken plug-in trailer part from my truck
and attached the new part that I bought from your company. It actually fit in the same holes which I bolted back on. Plugged it back in to my truck, hooked up my horse trailer and all my lights worked!!!! I didn’t replace the male end on the horse trailer and it all matched up perfectly. Very easy to install

One year ago I called etrailer to order parts. The customer service rep was very knowledgeable and helpful. Thank goodness for knowledgeable people. Makes my life easier. I do think etrailer has a good system in place and a desire to excell and be good at what they do. The products still work fine. Thank goodness- since etrailer doesn't do the manufacturing.
Thanks etrailer.

This was just the adapter I was looking for but no one had enough information to determine the brake signal wiring for sure - except for etrailer. Their technical information is always way ahead of the others. The price was great as well. Delivery was outstanding. They will get all of my business for trailer supplies.

by:

Was easy to change 12v and electric brake wire internally for trailers with the two opposite of each other causing brakes to lock.

by:

Very good product, fit both ends well. the 6 point side that is for a trailer was just a tad loose but alittle electrical tape for extra insurance works fine.

by:

Works as designed. It's wired for the six pin round to have the center pin as the aux, and the electric brake on the outer ring, which is fine. I note the advertisement says these two pins can easily be swapped, but there was nothing in the instructions which indicated how that might be done.

by:

Works great. Does what its supposed to do - converts a 6 pin round plug on a trailer to a 7 pole jack on the truck.

by:

Great products, fast delivery and good prices. They had everything in stock including the Ford specific brake cable and 7 to 6 pole adapter. Ordered last Monday. Received on Thursday. Put every in this weeked and am using it today (one week after order placed.

by:

Love this cause, I just don’t have the time to re- wire the bucket truck so it’s nice to just plug this in an I can hook are chipper up !!!!

by:

This product worked perfect to upgrade my trailer to my newer model wiring system on my tundra

by:

Appears to work well adapting a 7 pin motor home to a 6 pin magnetic light system.

by:

I needed another product that I couldn't find locally and also needed this so I ordered it from etrailer also. Postage cheaper than gas to go find one and etrailer price was very resonable. Nice people, great commication, and super fast shipping.

by:

The adapter arrive in record time and worked very well. The web site had useful information that helped in the selection.

by:

The product works fine but... what a great company. An informative website and great followup. All companies could learn something from eTrailer's example. They really care about what I think.

by:

Got a new truck and needed an adapter for our soon to be traded in trailer. This worker great. I have ordered several items form etrailer and their service is great.

by:

Worked great, all lights worked. Want to thank Diana for her help ordering this product and shipping it to us on time for us to go camping.

Thanks again

by:

The product was good, however it doesn't fit into my 7-way plug. Something is not aligned right.

by:

Good quality product. Easy to change pin configuration. Great replacement for worn out adapter. Received product in just a few days.

by:

Plug works great

by:

As always orders was processed, shipped. and delivered without any problems. Very timely. Thanks etrailer!

by:

Good quality adapter. Well made.

  • Troublehsooting Trailer Lights that Only Turn Signals Work Intermittently
Not having a circuit on the middle pin will not harm anything. It's normally for reverse lights and I'm guessing the trailer doesn't have any. A loose or weak ground is likely your problem. Since the trailer has been sitting for so long, and there was corrosion in the connector, there's a very good chance you'll find more. I would start by checking the grounds for each light and make sure their going to a good, clean, metal surface. Inspect the mounting studs if the lights ground through...

  • How to Wire Trailer 7-Way Connector
It sounds like you're using a 6-Way to 7-Way Adapter like part # 47549 and you're needing to change out the wiring so the brakes don't lock up. What I recommend doing is reconfiguring the wiring to make sure your truck and trailer wiring matches the industry standard. This will not only make everything work on your end, but it also ensures that your truck will work with other trailers, and your trailer will work with other trucks. I'm attaching a photo as well as a helpful article on...

  • Correct Trailer Connector Wiring Adapter for Vehicle with 7-Blade and Trailer with 6-Round
Yes, we do offer 7-blade to 6-round trailer connector adapters, the Adapter 7-Pole to 6-Pole part # 47549 is what I recommend. This is a low profile adapter that simply plugs in between the two connectors. It's deigned for vehicles with the standard 7-blade trailer connector and trailers with a more uncommon 6-round trailer connector.

  • Gooseneck Trailer Running Lights Stay On All the Time When Connected to Truck
The likely culprit is a dirty or corroded connector on either the trailer or the truck. Make sure each is clean and free of corrosion inside and out. Corrosion could be causing a short between the running light circuit and the 12 volt circuit in the trailer connector. If that does not solve the issue then make sure the circuit for running lights on the truck side is in the 11 oclock position if looking at the pins. And on the trailer side make sure the running light wire is in the 1 oclock...

If your trailer has a cable with a male 6-pin connector then you'll be able to use the 7-Way to 6-Way Round Trailer Connector Adapter # 47549. The male end of your 6-pin connector will simply plug into this connector allowing you to plug into your tow vehicle's 7-pin socket.

  • Recommendation for a 4-Way Flat to 5-Way Flat Trailer Connector Adapter
The Lexus 300 and Nissan Pathfinder use different wiring harnesses, but if they both have 4-Way flat trailer connectors, they will be pinned the same (function the same). The 5-Way trailer side connector will have an extra function at the pin furthest from the covered ground pin. This function is typically used on surge couplers that have an electric lockout feature. The corresponding pin on the vehicle side would need to be connected to the reverse light circuit for this feature to function....

  • Troubleshooting Replacing Trailer 6-Way With 7-Way
Wiring the brakes to the 12 volt hot lead would make them lock up so you need to be sure you have the pins on both connectors wired in the same way. Use a circuit tester to make sure the pins on your vehicle connector match the pins on your trailer connector (see accompanying photo) and make any necessary adjustments. The other issues is that you may have a short somewhere in your brake wiring so you can go over the wires on your brakes to see if there are any broken, nicked or crimped...

The '.C' means that there is a trailer connected and isn't an indicator of a problem. Are you by chance using an adapter in the 7-way connector to change it to a 6-way? If you are, there are two common ways to wire that connector. One uses the center pin as the brake output, the other use the center pin as the constant 12-volt power supply to the trailer. If the vehicle is wired one way and the horse trailer the other, it would certainly explain why the brakes immediately apply when the...

Have someone sit in the truck and run through all of the functions, turn signals, brake lights, and running lights, while you test the pins. • Determining the Functions of Trailer Wires to Switch to a 7-Way Connector
When looking at trailer wiring there is no standard for wire color and function. To determine the functions of the wires there are a couple of things you can do. First, you can trace each of the wires from the connector back to where it ends on the trailer. Sometime this is not possible if the wiring is mostly internal to the frame. The other method is to touch each of the wires to the positive side of a separate 12 volt battery and see what powers on. Once you know the functions of the...

It sounds like you have a wiring mixup either on the vehicle or trailer. In order to check this you are going to want to test the vehicle with a circuit tester and the trailer with a 12 volt battery. You can then use the two photos I have attached for you to make sure the wires are in the correct terminals on the trailer connectors. I would also check with the manufacturer of the 6 to 7-way adapter to see how it is wired. For example, the Adapter 7-Pole to 6-Pole part # 47549 is wired so...

It sounds like you might have two separate issues going on simultaneously. First, if the lights are very dim it is usually because the necessary amount of voltage isn't reaching the lamps. Since this is occurring on more than one circuit, I'd guess that the problem is most likely a build-up of corrosion on the trailer connector on the vehicle or the one on the trailer. Closely examine the pins and sockets. If you can see white or green corrosion, it's likely that the corrosion is restricting...

What it could be is the tow package fuse or relay for the brake lights is blown or otherwise not working properly. You will need to check the vehicle owners manual and/or check the power distribution box lid to find the tow package fuses/relays in question. Add or replace the offending part and test it again. If that was the problem and it blows again then there is a short somewhere, most likely a bad ground which could be where the two connectors come together or at the trailer tail lights.
