Randy: Hey guys, it's Randy here at etrailer.com. Today, we wanted to take a few minutes and explain the six-pole adapter. We've got a couple options here we wanted to show you. This is going to convert a standard seven pole plug, and in this case it's going to work for a six-pole, and four-flat. So we have two additional options on trailers that we can connect. The biggest problem that you're going to run into with a six-pole round connector, is knowing what wiring code your trailer is set up as.

With a six pin connector, we have the option of the center pin being a 12 volt power lead, or we have the option of it being a brake lead, so when you hit your brake controller it sends brakes back to your trailer. Now, if we haven't wrong one way, if we have it set on our brake lead, it's not doing a whole lot of damage for us, or any real concerns with it. We're just not going to have 12 volt power back to our trailer. If we do it the opposite way, however, we can run into some pretty big issues. If that center lead is hot, or it has 12 volt power, and your trailer is wired for that to have brakes, well your brakes are going to lock up and you're not going anywhere. So we have two different varieties here. We have one that's going to have the brake lead as the center pin.

So if your trailer is coded that way, you want that part numbers. The other, that center pin's going to be coded for 12 volt. So that's going to be something that you're going to definitely want to keep in mind, and get the right plug for your application. Or I can give you a better solution, a little bit later. But let's talk about this in case you do know your coding and you want just a single adaptor to do the job for you.Overall, it's a really well built adapter.

Feels nice and solid. There's no movement, there's no play in it. You can see we've got a tab right up here on top that's going to catch that door. It's going to prevent us from being able to pull it out. Four-pole right there, so that's going to give us our ground.

It's going to give us our trailer running lights. It's going to give us our left turn and brake and our right turn and brake. That's going to be nice for the smaller utility trailers that have just a standard four-pole plug on them. Or that can also be used to power a cargo carrier, or maybe you've got a hitch cover that you want lit as you head down the road. It's going to take care of that for you.And then we've got our six-pole there is that. So that's going to take care of all of those signals. Plus we're adding power and generally the brake circuit to come through. Now something I like about this plug versus some of the other ones, is that the door's are really nice and solid. Come down and hold really well. Your four-pole's going to have that rubber cap on it, so we're going to be able to keep this out of the elements. Really shouldn't have to worry about rusting, corrosion, especially if you use a little bit of dielectric grease. You'll placed this on each of the contacts. That's going to prevent moisture and dirt from building up in there which leads to corrosion. So on your trailer plugs that are going in here and the plug as you put it in your seven pole. It's a great idea to use that. As far as the installation process goes, just like any seven pole. We're going to put it into that tab, is behind the tab on the door. Allow that to come back, it's going to hold it in place. And then whether you've got a six or a four-pole trailer, we can very easily, if I can get it lined up right, plug that in. And that'll give us all the power we need, make sure everything works for us.Now customers give these adapters really good reviews. No issues with them working properly. No issues with them doing what they want them to do. I think if you knew your trailering code and if you we're never planning on switching to a different trailering code, or never plan on switching trailers, you could get the direct, either center pin electric brakes, center pin 12 volt. And it's going to work out properly for you.Another question customers always ask us, is that the one that you would buy Would you own that one Or is there a better option out there And in this case, I would not buy either one of these. I think that you're kind of limiting yourself a little bit. It's a six- and a four-pole. We've got something else from Hopkins, HM47570. Now this, I think takes the best of both worlds here, plus goes up a notch. So we've got completely covered springs here, that protects them from the elements. So that we know our door's going to work out really well. Gaskets inside are going to keep moisture from getting in. And you'll notice we've got a five-flat connector here now. So this can be used as a four-flat converter, or adapter, of five-flat adapter, which with what we talked about the four-pole, you're going to add a reverse signal to that. That can be used for surge style couplers for the electric lockout. Or it can be used to run reverse lights on your trailer, if you like a little illumination when trying to back up. And it's going to have the six-pole plug. That's going to take care of any six-pole round regardless of the way it's coded, and that happens with this little tab right here. This, I think ,is really important if you're dealing with several different types of six-pole, or if you just want to be sure you've completely covered your bases. We've got four-pole, five pole, we've got six-pole round. You can see here it says electric brake on it. That means our electric brake is going to be that center pin. But if we just take that out and rotate it, place that back in. Now we've got 12 volt auxiliary. So that completely negates you having to pick which one you have. It's also going to save you some trouble if you didn't figure it out correctly. We send you the wrong one, then we'll have to swap them out. So as you can see, this would be my pick. While these get great reviews, and customers are really happy with those, this is right in the same ballpark as far as what you're going to spend on it. It adds a five-flat and that adjustability. So if I had to pick one, that'd be my guy.

First order, reasonable prices, excellent service, delivery, and followup and everything was included in the order and delivery was as promised!

The Roadmaster Stowmaster tow bar is a solid and reliable unit and replaces the original I have used on four tow vehicles and three motorhomes since 1998 and has been coast to coast towing many times over this period. [Still works perfectly]

Happy camper1

When the factory installed adapter on my motor home broke I had very little hope of replacing it with the same exact unit but after visiting Davis Custom Trailers, Karen gave me all the necessary information to get in touch with etrailer and it was a simple process from there to identify the exact adapter, place the order and in just a few days receive the much needed unit: problem solved!! Without replacing with the same adapter I would have had to do some rewiring and changing to different adapters each time it was used.
Thanks for a job well done and a happy customer.

  • No Power On Brake Circuit Using Hopkins Endurance Multi-Tow Trailer Connector Adapter
As you know there are 2 ways a 6-Way connector could be wired. The center pin is either going to be 12-volt power or brake output. The other function that is not in the center is going to be in the 2 o'clock position if looking at the face of the connector (10 oclock position if looking at the back where the wires attach). What you can do is use a circuit tester such as # PTW2992 to test the adapter when plugged into the vehicle. Have someone test the pins (whichever configuration the...

  • Trailer Connector Adapter Needed to Convert 7-Way on Truck to 6-Way on Trailer
To adapt the 7-way connector on your truck to the 6-way on your trailer, I would recommend the 7 Pole to 6 Pole Adapter with 4 Pole, part # 47565. This adapter also has an integrated 4-pole connector. There are two accepted methods of wiring a 6-way connector, one uses the center pin as the brake output circuit, the other uses the center pin as the 12-volt lead for accessory power. This adapter can be wired either way. To see a diagram showing how a 6-way connector is wired, click on...

  • Can a Breakaway System Battery Charger Charge a Car Battery to Power a Trailer Mounted Winch
There are a couple of different things going on. First, a 12 volt circuit from a trailer connector will not be able to charge a battery, it will only be able to provide a maintenance charge, maintaining the charge level of the battery but not adding anything to it. While it may be sufficient for smaller breakaway batteries, it will not be sufficient for a 12 volt automotive or deep cycle battery. I recommend using a dedicated battery for the breakaway system, like the Engager Trailer BreakAway...

  • Does the Mounting Bracket on Draw-Tite # 75155 Relocate the Factory Wiring on a 2007 Lexus GX470
The bracket on the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch, item # 75155, is designed to relocate the factory 7-Way connector. The on center mounting measurement is 3 inches. I would recommend the Pollak 7 Pole to 4 Pole Connector Adapter, item # PK12716, for a 7-Way to 4-Way adapter. If you think you may need other options the Adapter 7 Pole to 6 Pole and 4 Pole with Cover - Universal, item # 47565, would be an excellent choice.

  • Replacement 7-Way Trailer Connector for a 2012 Chevy Silverado
The correct replacement 7-Way trailer connector for a 2012 Chevy Silverado is # PK11916. It twists into the existing location on the bumper of the truck. I have linked a video showing installation of this connector for you. Connector # 47565 is actually an adapter meant to plug into a 7-Way trailer connector and it provides a 6-Way and 4-Way on the output side. It is not a stand alone item since it needs to be plugged into a 7-Way such as # PK11916.

  • How To Power A Trailer Connector On A Towed Vehicle
Towed vehicle wiring, like the Curt Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # C96JR, only sends power to the tail lights and wouldn't be sending anything to the trailer connector. You would need to wire a second connector to the back of the Jeep, like part # 47565, and splice it into the tail light wiring with some bonded wire # 16-4B-1 in order to get the signals from the lights for the bike rack.

  • No Running Lights On Trailer With 6-Pin Connected To 2003 Dodge Ram With Factory 7-Way
If you tested the trailer lights and everything is working, then the problem is from the 6-Way connector back to the truck. You will want to use a circuit tester like, # PTW2993, to test the 7-Way connector attached to the 2003 Dodge Ram. First test the pin on the connector that would be the running lights and see if you have power coming out of the connector. If there is no power coming out, then test the wire on the back of the connector that is for the running lights to see if you have...

Any of the following items will work to make your connection to the trailer hassle free. • What Can 6-Way Round Trailer Connectors be Wired Two Different Ways
Basically, there is no set way to wire a trailer connector. Different manufacturers can set it up any way they want to. However, while there is no hard and fast rule on how connectors should be wired, most stick with the most common methods so that their parts will be compatible with everyone else. The 6-Way round pole connector can still be wired one of two ways; with the center pole as the 12 volt hot lead, or as the brake. Having the center pole as the 12 volt hot lead is probably most...
