If you're replacing a busted or rusted-out spring on your trailer - or if you've decided to upgrade to dacromet to avoid rusted-out springs down the line - the first thing you'll need to do is measure your existing leaf springs. Take a look at the measurements above. If these dimensions - and the weight rating - match what you currently have, you should be good to go.

Remember, though, your leaf springs can flatten a bit over time. And if you're measuring your spring while your trailer is fully loaded, the overall length that you get might be a bit more than what you need a brand new, unloaded spring to measure.

Rustproof Your Trailer Suspension with Dacromet

Slipper Spring Dacromet

As you travel across highways and backroads, your trailer's leaf springs are going to corrode and flake over time. This is especially true if you have a boat trailer that's regularly submerged in water. Completely rusted-out springs on trailers are all too common, and these dacromet springs are a great solution to that problem.

Dacromet Versus Rusty Springs Comparison

Longer-lasting springs will save you money and are great for any trailer, but they are a must have for folks who live or play by the water. If you live on the coast, you're probably always rinsing the saltwater off of your trailer to try and keep rust at bay. If you're really worried, you might've even tried to repaint your springs or spray them down with rust inhibitors. But upgrading to these dacromet-coated leaf springs could cut down on or eliminate all of that maintenance, leaving you more time to spend out on the water.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. We conducted our own salt spray test and found that this dacromet coating lasts up to 744 hours before it begins to deteriorate. Compare that to some other dacromet coatings out there that are rated at just 300 hours - or zinc coatings that don't last for even that long - and you can be sure these springs will last.

Slipper Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Slipper Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • How Does the Single-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit #APS6SE Work with 1.75 Inch Slipper Springs
To assemble a slipper spring suspension system, you'll need several components: the hangers and bolts (included in the kit APS6SE); slipper springs, such as the 1.75 inch # e33SR; spring seats such as # TRSS300; and a U-bolt mounting kit such as # # APUBR-8. The 1.75 inch springs attach the same as 2 inch springs would. The hangers attach the springs to your trailer frame. The U-bolt plates attach the springs to the axle. The spring seat welds onto your axle to provide additional support....

  • Will Slipper Spring for 4,300-lb Trailer Axles Work For Axle Rated For 2600-Lb Axle
I did some research and for a 2-inch square axle the rating can be between 2,200 to 3,500 lbs. It sounds like the tag on your trailer axle falls within that range. The 4-Leaf Slipper Spring, part # e33SR you asked about is designed to work with trailer axles up to 4,300-lbs. This can result in a little stiffer ride but the dimensions are most important so if the mounting dimensions are a match for your trailer, # e33SR will work great for you.

  • Should a Nylon Bushing Be Used With the Open Eye End Of Slipper Spring # e33SR
A Nylon Bushing # TRBU11561 is not required to be used on the open end of the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # e33SR. Since the bushing is not going to be fully encased it stands that under the weight of the trailer it will fail and break apart more easily. I recommend spraying some LubeMaster Dry Silicone Spray # RM-747 on the open end bolt and contact areas of the spring. This will provide lubrication to the parts without attracting dirt.

  • Horse Trailer Slipper Spring Recommendation that is 1-3/4 inches Wide
What you described is a slipper spring. We carry a few different slipper springs that are 1-3/4 inches wide. I attached a link to a page that has all of them. You will want to know the axle capacity you would need and the overall length. With that info we can set you up with the right springs. For a 4,000 lb axle for example, you would want the part # e33SR which is 26-1/4 inches long.

  • New Brake Assemblies, Hub/Drums, Brake Lines, and Bearing Buddy for Trailer with 3,500 lb Axle
For as trashed as those brake assemblies are I am impressed with how spotless that spindle is! Based on the bearing numbers you mentioned you have a #84 spindle and the hub part # AKHD-545-35-G-K is correct. Since this its galvanized it's a really great option as it will fight corrosion. The flexible brake line kits like the part # 18SI-BLKIT is what I would go with. They are just as durable as anything else and a lot easier to install. • Can Slipper Spring Replace Existing Double Eye Leaf Spring
You could replace a double-eye leaf spring with a slipper spring like the # e33SR spring you'd looked at, but it's recommended that you remove the existing rear hanger (assuming it's a single axle trailer) with a rear hanger like # 115706S as your existing rear hanger isn't designed for use with slipper springs. You'll also want to choose a spring with sufficient capacity to handle the weight of the boat and trailer. You can choose a higher rated spring than your existing one, but be aware...

I can help you determine how to figure out the right replacement slipper springs, though I'm not 100% certain what you mean by "where can I find how much space or clearance is required." I think you are asking if there is a standard amount a slipper spring will elongate over time, and the answer is unfortunately no, as it all depends on the amount of weight on the spring, the amount of time it was used, the quality of the spring, etc. I would take into account an inch or so of your slipper...

  • Is It Normal For Open Eye Spring To Hit Frame Of Trailer When Loaded?
Thanks for the picture! The spring shouldn't hit the frame like yours does in the picture, so the correct solution would be to either add a longer front hanger or using a shorter spring. The correct replacement hanger will be dependent on the width of your spring. If you have a 1-3/4" wide spring the longest hanger we offer is the CE Smith Front Hanger Bracket for Trailer Slipper Springs # CE14016G which is 2-1/4" tall. • Replacing Boat Trailer 3-Leaf Slipper Springs to Correct for Reduced Wheel/Fender Clearance
Axle capacity is usually found on a plate or sticker affixed to the axle itself. 3-leaf slipper springs in the 1-3/4-inch width you referenced can be seen on the included link. Since well-worn springs like yours tend to become elongated I suspect your existing springs when new were this length and that your axle is rated for 1500-lbs. • Can a Single Axle Boat Trailer Be Switched From a Slipper Spring Suspension to Double Eye
To switch to a Double Eye Spring # e48SR you would need to also change out your Rear Hanger # 30-20 since you will be adding Shackles # K71-358-00. This is required since the rear hanger has to be 1-3/4" wide on the outer versus at least 1-3/4" wide on the inner like you get with a Slipper Spring Hanger # CES83FR for a Slipper Spring # e33SR.

  • Should Trailer Leaf Springs Have Shackles on Front and Back
Hey Richard, so yeah having shackles on the front and back of the leaf spring would be incorrect by normal standards and I think would potentially be dangerous as it would allow the axle to move forward and back independent of the trailer and would pretty easily cause sway. Since most likely the hangers are the same height and are at an odd spacing I would go ahead and replace the hangers and shackles with a kit like the part # APS4. I don't know your axle capacity though so to pick out...

When picking out a leaf spring you really want to base it on the capacity of the axle and the length more so than the amount of leafs in the spring pack. If you can get me the axle capacity of your trailer and how long you need I can get you the best recommendation.
