Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Ball Mounts - Fixed Ball Mount - 40345 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Draw-Tite extra long ball mount for 2" hitches. This has a 2 3/4" rise, and a 4" drop, and a 6,000 lb weight capacity. Now this ball mount'll let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank portion right here slides into your vehicle's 2" hitch receiver opening. Then the ball platform right here's what'll provide the mounting point for a hitch ball that has a 1" diameter shank. Those we do sell separately on our website. If you notice, on the shank portion, it has an angled cut to it for easy installation into your hitch.

Both the drop and the rise positions are available to ensure level towing. Now, when you do install this into your hitch, it does require a hitch pin and clip, or a hitch lock, to hold the ball mount to your hitch. We do sell them separately on our website. The application again, this is for a 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. Maximum gross trailer weight capacity is 6,000 lbs.

Maximum tongue weight capacity is 600 lbs. Do want to give you a few dimensions on this. We're going to measure the length from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the ball hole. If we put our ruler on that center to center is right at 11". Now the drop we mentioned is 4" drop, and the drop will be measured from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. If we put the ruler on that, you can see there's your 4" drop.

The rise would be, if you flip it over, from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform, and that's going to be right at 2 3/4". The ball hold diameter, that portion right there that the hitch ball will attach to, again that's going to be . Let's turn it this way. The diameter of that hole opening is right at 1". That should do it for the review on the Draw-Tite extra long ball mount for 2" hitches with a 2 3/4" rise, 4" drop, and a 6,000 lb weight capacity..

I needed an extended ball mount for my new Jeep in order for my utility trailer tongue to clear the rear mounted spare tire. Item is as described on the web site and was received earlier than expected.
etrailer has great customer service and is my number one go to place for towing and trailer supplies.

Great products and service. I was able to order everything I needed to add a tow hitch and ball to my 2006 Jeep liberty. Very fast shipping. They even called me to verify orders and availability. Clear and easy to follow installation instructions. I hauled an [retailer] trailer from Texas to Ohio without any issues. Even bought a trailer and use it frequently for hardware stoe runs.

Overall, I have to say that I am satisfied although not particularily impressed. The finish on the ball mount is mediocre ... there are several spots where the paint is chipped off for instance. It was received today and installed today with no use yet the pictures show the areas in question. You can tell by the label installation that someone who really didn't care rushed the operation. It also fit considerably looser than the Reese bar that I removed. I had to apply several turns of duct tape around the tube to make it as snug as the original. As I said, it'll do fine, just not impressed.

I havent used this bar since last May 2014 but it worked fine and I really dont have any complaints. Under the circumstances, Id probably bump it up a star on the rating although everything I said in the initial review was valid. I have since sold the bar with the bicycle rack that I sold on Craigs List.

Very good service Stacey was very nice and helpful and new just what I needed.I would recommen etrailer to any one.keep up the great service

The long ball mount fit my project well, maybe a bit longer than I needed. I added (welded) a 6" receiver tube (using 2 pieces of 3/4" square stock as spacers) to the top of the tube in order to carry my bike rack and tow my boat at the same time. The bike rack is a Hollywood Sport Rider 2; Tray Style Bike carrier. Trailer is a B & M Tilt Bed Trailer for small boats on an interchangable ball hitch.

by:

I needed a longer ball receiver on order to accommodate the bike carrier that I purchased and found this one at etrailer.com. The service was great and the expedited shipping worked great. I received the product in Canada 2 days after I placed the order. Great service and an excellent product. Ready to hit the road!!

Looked for a ball mount that would give more room with the spare tire. No one local had anything that woul be long enough. Found exactly what I was looking for at etrailer.com. Would recommend this ball mount and etrailer.com to anyone.

by:

This longer ball mount was what i needed to give me more room to open the back door on my FJ when towing a trailer. Have to take it all out for a test drive soon. Also added a side mount swivel jack to give me some more ground clearance. The picture only shows the jack.

by:

This draw bar is working out great. My spare is 13 inches wide and only 2 inches above my receiver. This bar allows me to connect my trailer with ease. I was using an extender and it required two locks ,it was heavier, and just more trouble to use. Now I am ready to go in minutes.

by:

2008 Honda Element SC setup was perfect with this turned over to provide 2 3/4" rise to the 2" ball. My jetski trailer was perfectly level with that setup.

by:

I needed a longer ball mount with my spare tire swing. I tried the extension piece to move it out but I didn't feel comfortable with having so much movement back there. found this one and it looks like it will do the trick. plus its a higher rating than the shorter one I have.

by:

My Trailer sits higher than my van 4 inches. I inverted this hitch and have hauled lots of trailers with it. Nothing to report it works great

by:

Extra length makes it harder to smack your bumper cover!

by:

Hitch is loose in receiver. I have never understood why the shaft is so short and cut at an angle. The angle cut makes it even shorter when using in a raise application. I would think having a longer shaft would help without having some special thing to keep it from wobbling.

After year it has performed well even though it moves around. I can see there are some applications not mine where a longer shaft is not going to fit. I still do not understand the purpose of the angle cut.

We needed a new ball mount for our pick-up after we added a rear step. We searched everywhere for an extended ball mount and finally found one at etrailer.com. The service was excellent and the item arrived in a few short days. It was exactly what we were looking for. Thanks.

Getting the right drop or rise for the class of receiver that you need is a must before buying. The support that they have can talk you through on how to determine what class you need and the rise or drop to be able to safely pull your trailer. Next time you are on the highway and you see a tandem axle trailer it will most likely have to much drop hitch putting all the weight on the front axle. Etrailer staff will help you get your trailer to tow level saving you money on fuel and trailer repairs.

I ordered LED tail lights for an old trailer that needed a brighter brake light. No problem with the order or installing the lights. I have since purchased a drop-down trailer hitch from etrailer. I'm very pleased with the products. I love the videos on the etrailer website which give me a more accurate view of the product than what I can see in just a photo; and the audio instructions/review are very helpful.

by:

I'm using this with the 40038 ball as a 4" rise in a Curt C13144 hitch, all purchased from Etrailer. vehicle is a 2015 Subaru Forester with factory wiring harness. All items were received promptly, and were straightforward to install. This combination positions trailer ball well clear of bumper at height of 19" - perfect for small box trailer.

by:

The ball mount, recommended by a customer service rep, is a bit of a sloppy fit in the recommended hitch from etrailer. I had to purchase a stabilizer to stop the clanking, which is both an added expense and added work each time I want to remove the ball and mount. Etrailer has always been 100% in my book so I’m slightly disappointed in this product.

by:

This extra, extra long ball mount is just what I needed so I could lower my truck tailgate without having to unhook my camper. The ball mount was shipped and delivered promptly. The only negative is that the two holes that are used to connect it to the receiver hitch were improperly aligned. I had to use a grinder bit to remove about a 16th of an inch of metal so I could get the pin through all the holes. Tough job but at least I know the steel used is good quality!

by:

Received items in 3 days! Great products and great service! These would have cost 3 times the amount if I would have bought locally. Both items hooked up easily and solved my space problem when towing my boat with the camper on the truck.

Kevin,I have a F350 with a 10.5 camper in the bed. I need an extension bar to go under the camper so i can pull my 22 boat.Is this similar to what you got, just curious if it would work for me.Thanks,Steve

by:

Perfect fit and extended my ball so I can drop tailgate while trailer is hooked up.

Everything is good

by:

Etrailer so far good as advertised; OK price and shipped quickly; the product though fits loosely in my hitch receiver and rattles a lot; I thought it could be a tighter fit and I'm going to add some felt stripping around the tube and see if it dampens the rattling.

by:

this hitch is great. i needed a longer ball mount to give me more room between my trailer jack and spare tire on the tail gate of my jeep wrangler. it is very hard to find a extra long ball mount. i found etrailer has them and a lot of other fine products.

by:

Perfect fit for the Curt Hitch Item: C13563 on my 2008 Nissan Quest like e-trailer recommended . If installing on a Nissan Quest mini van be sure to have this receiver in the up position when mounting the ball.

  • Do Longer Hitch Extenders Reduce Hitch Capacity
There isn't a 100% direct mathematical relationship I'm aware of but yes, the further rearward you go from the hitch receiver, the lower the tongue weight capacity gets. Which is why extenders typically will reduce a trailer hitch's capacity by at least half or more. The same doesn't hold true for a longer ball mount, because it's a single piece and not an add-on like an extender. I'm assuming you have a 2 inch class III receiver on your 2012 Outback. I'm not sure what kind of rise/drop...

  • Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness and Ball Mount for 2020 Mazda CX-5
The etrailer brand # e98902 Class III hitch is a great choice for your 2020 Mazda CX-5. Finding the necessary rise/drop ball mount is a straightforward process. Measure from the top inside of the receiver tube to the ground. Measure from the underside of the trailer coupler when its jacked up level to the ground (or, you can use 17 inches as an average). Subtract the two numbers and the result is the rise/drop you need. If the receiver tube is taller, you'll use the ballmount in the drop...
