Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Very nice axle and delivered quickly

by:

Couldn't have done better. Quick shipping, perfect fit. Customer support was knowledgeable and helpful.

by:

Dexter Axle is a direct drop in replacement for a bent one. Arrived quickly and had protectors on the ends.

Old hubs fit nicely but order at least inside bearing seals it is important for the ez lube to work well they not leak. and you'll need to remove them to repack the inside bearings anyways.

I rarely write reviews or respond to requests to review purchases but in this case I feel I must. The items I purchased to repair my very old and nearly defunct boat trailer were just exactly what was needed. Not only did everything fit perfectly but the price was unbeatable!! I would definitely purchase here again. Thank you for great quality products at a very reasonable price.

by:

As usually quality of produce,, delivery, and packaging was superb! Bad weather did get in the way of delivery so I was delayed a few days...until the original delivery day estimated when the package shipped.
I did have one concern...it is not a deal breaker...it looks like a splatter from the welder ended up on the spindle between the machined surfaces where the bearings run. I think I can file it off without impacting the function of the axle. This one got by quality control...

by:

Worked great for a harbor freight trailer replacement. I had to weld a little to make it fit but so far it’s hauling my firewood out of the mountains nicely.

by:

What a great product, packaging was simple yet effective. It's a great deal, can't wait to order for etrailer again. They fixed a problem I had with order (100% my fault) and made it easy to get the right part. I love these guys!

by:

Axle fit perfect and solved my tire wear problem. The price was terrific.

by:

Looks great. Fast delivery compared to [online retailers] which lost this part and didn't let me know until 3 weeks later. Needed this part asap.

by:

Fast shipping. Axle was poking out of the box, but no damage to the axle.

by:

Excellent product and service!

I called to confirm fitment and availability. I then place the order on line on Wednesday and the axle showed up Friday evening. You can not beet that! Local suppliers where about $75.00 more and I had to go pick it up an hour each way!

THANKS ETRILER FOR TAKING CARE MY ONLINE ORDER THE DEXTER TRAILER AXLE WAS PERFECT FOR MY NEW INSTALLATION I DONT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THE EXTRA LOAD ON MY BOAT TRAILER

by:

I replaced the noodley Lippert axles that bent on my utility trailer. Much better. They also have the proper bend in them for the load compensation. I took the part number off the Lippert axle, and etrailer was able to cross reference the part numbers for perfect fit.

by:

You were great to the way you help me resolve my problems. The axle is the correct one I needed. Just one small thing I found that it was missing two mounting studs.

by:

Check your order! I specifically ordered Dexter axles and they sent me generic ones.

by:

I inherited an aluminum trailer that ended up needing a complete overhaul and etrailer was the best resource I could have found. After researching extensively to find out what I needed and watching their videos on how to do it I ended up ordering an EZ-lube axle, galvanized hubs, springs and a hanger kit (in other words everything from the frame down).
Everything shipped quickly and arrived in great shape. All the parts worked perfectly and I couldn't be happier!

by:

etrailer had the best prices and excellent customer service, Thanks Ian! Shipping was fast and free to boot. I bent the front axle on my in-laws fifth wheel camper and this axle fit the bill. I had to order a set of spring seats and weld them to the opposite sides. The original seats were at 68.5 " centers and that configuration was unavailable anywhere.

by:

I'd like to thank odella and Kate for taking such good care of my order.
I first talked to Odella and had to break off the conversation for something else called back and Kate took my call and was able to fulfill the order and take all my information very nice dealing with the company that has their people in the United States and you're not talking to a computer!
Also was really shocked I received the order 2 days early really good work!

by:

Axle arrived in perfect condition, was also an exact fit for my Top Hat Trailer.
Your staff was of great help finding my right axle.
I would recommend etrailer to everyone.

by:

After a rust related axle failure, my equipment trailer was down. (If you roll in the rust belt, check your axles near where the brake wire goes through)
After checking my local source, I was told there was a long lead time for new axles due to the pandemic.
I was so happy to find etrailer. They had the exact axles I needed. After I pulled the axles I realized I also needed hardware and u-bolts.
Everything arrived ahead of schedule, allowing me to get back up and running quickly.
Thank you etrailer. You are a valuable resource.

Perfect fit, nice axle and fast delivery. I liked it so much I ordered another a day later to replace the front axle. My 30 yr old tandem trailer's axle broke at the wheel, so I went to a local store which doesn't stock them anymore. Could of ordered a so so axle for $94 + $28 shipping and wait 2 weeks but needed it fast. I went to a major trailer sales & service shop and told "maybe we could get one for $250" with no call back. I decided to check out etrailer and was surprised to see Dexter axles that fit my trailer for $140 with FREE shipping in 3-4 days! Ordered Sat. night, got it Wednesday afternoon, and installed it (with brakes) in an hour. Only problem I had was determining if spindles would fit my hubs. They stated "1/16th spindle" and must be industry talk but french to me. So I had to look up bearing #'s they listed to check bearing sizes to make sure they fit my hubs. A little more time but not a deal breaker. The best part was the huge difference in ride with just one new axle. Always had bouncing loaded or not, but now with just one axle the ride is smoother no load and with my 4000 lb tractor on it. Can't wait to get the 2nd axle on that arrived today. First two pics show the difference between the old straight axle and the new dexter axle. The third is a pic of my 2nd axle, oh well. Etrailer is my new go to place for trailer parts. I have 7 trailers.

  • Can Electric Brakes Be Added to Dexter 2,200lb Capacity Idler Axle
Brake mounting flanges like part # 4-34 could be welded to the axle you referenced. The spindles are compatible with the L44649 wheel bearings. If you needed a hub with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use the # 8-173-16UC3-EZ hub drum and the # 23-47 and # 23-48 brake assemblies. You'd also need 4 nuts # 6-17 and # 5-8 lock washers per brake assembly. If you needed a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, go with the # 8-257-5UC3-EZ hub drum along with the brake assemblies and hardware mentioned above.

I have a couple options that may help you to get the correct hub size as there is not one that is a direct fit for the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles # T20BTR-EZ-6048. First the #84 E-Z Lube Spindle w/ Brake Flange # TRU74FR can be welded on in place of the smaller spindles that come on the Dexter axle. This will give you a spindle that is traditionally found on a larger 3,500lb axle and allow you to use the 6 on 5-1/2" Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-655-35-EZ-K....

  • Can EZ Lube Hub be Replaced by Non-EZ Lube Hub
The only difference between EZ lube hubs and non-EZ lube hubs is the dust cover/cap on the hub. The EZ lube hubs have a rubber plug you can pull out whereas the non-EZ lube hubs have a cab without a cover. You don't even have to remove the zerk fitting if you don't want to. Best option is to grease by hand and not use a Bearing Buddy in my opinion as they typically allow people to overfill the hubs which eventually blows out the grease seal. We may not have a straight axle solution but we do have axle-less options. I have included a link to them for you.
