Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great Service, very helpful, axle fit perfectly dimensions were exact.
shipped out and arrived earlier that promised.
Dexter did not include "D washers and E- Trailer sent them to me right away so I could finish my trailer project.

Overall Great Jo will do business with them again.

Thanks.

by:

so far so good, just did a shake down test, all good. The trailer went straight and true. Now just waiting on my other order to come in so I can put some weight on the truck and trailer for the real test.

by:

The axle came right on time when they said it would be there. It was easy to put together and all the parts were there. It was helpful that there was grease included and plenty of it! I also appreciated that the company sent new lug nuts for the tire. The previous ones were pretty old. I was trying to put a 2016 axle on a 1974 hand built trailer and this axle fit perfectly. I will definitely use etrailer again.

Still working great!!

by:

Well painted, one hub lock screw thread bad machined from factory.
50lb bearing nut makes it in the beginning stif turning . Normal, will ease with use if bearinf are packed with sticky marine grease.

Well build and packed even with UPS tormenting the outer box shell. LOL

In etrailer I beleave sind 2016 after so many counter dealer headaches and $$$$$ pricing.

by:

Service by etrailer was very good. As for the dexter parts, there was some questions about inner seals to retain grease. All good so far.

Great product!

by:

Quick shipping. Seems to be a quality product. Good price. Excellent customer service and question answering. Would be 5 stars if I could have found an axle short enough for my project. I had to cut down the 60” one I ordered. Not necessarily their fault, I’m just building a small trailer. Will order here again for sure

good price, fast shipping. Way to easy!

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Very excited about putting my faithful trailer back in service, with a serious axle underneath that I have confidence in. The folks at etrailer very helpful and responsive. Thanks

by:

Everything was as expected and we were able to repair our trailer without issues. Shipping was prompt and the service was great. Received the package one day earlier than initially promised

by:

I purchased a number of products from etrailer and I am very pleased with them all. The shipper lost my axle. When I contacted etrailer customer service, they handled my problem quickly and I had a replacement axle in a couple days. Well done!

The products were all of high quality and the assemble was much easier as a result. I have attached a few pictures of the build for those interested.

Thanks etrailer for your great products and service!!

These axles work great. I replaced three axles on my trailer last fall (2022) with these axles. I was able to install the new axles and springs in about 3 hours because everything matched up very nicely - thanks to the help of the folks at etrailer.

by:

Had all parts necessary to add a new axle to my trailer.Parts are well made and easy to install.

by:

I ordered this axle as a replacement for the one on my 1996 Haulin' 4x8 utility trailer. I'd neglected to maintain the bearings and when one went it destroyed my axle. This axle was an exact fit but the spring seats needed to be moved to the top of the axle. I ordered new seats and U-bolt mounting kit as well as the axle. I found a welder to remove the original spring seats and weld the new ones to match my application. Installation was a snap, I just followed the video included on the web site. Ordering my parts from etrailer really saved me $$ over the quotes I'd received from local shops.

by:

Quick delivery with tracking link! Great product and price!! Easy process to install axle and hubs. I would have appreciated a torque specification for the U-Bolts and Lug nuts in the video. I didn't take the time to search other locations or Q&A.

Tip: 1-1/2 " PVC makes a great tool to seat the grease seals. I used my 28MM socket, it was very close to size. I decided to use 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe to install the E-Z Lube dust seal. I have many tools however no wooden hammers.

by:

Product seems to be built well. I was missing a set of outer bearings that I had to get from a local tractor supply due to time constraints. They were missing when shipped to me. I have been happy so far with this product as I have pulled my home built teaardrop on it. I have traveled over 3k miles with it as well as a tire set I purchased from etrailer.
Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Tire w 15"
Good sturdy wheels and tires and they look good in person.

by:

Really good solid axle... I needed the mounting tabs moved and had a metal fabricator do the work for $20.00. This was used on an old boat trailer that I turned into a utility trailer. Also swapped out the springs with ones purchased from etrailer too. To complete the package I ordered (3) 165/65-8 trailer tires. The trailer tows straight and hauls everything I've ever needed to.

by:

So far the hubs haven’t been delivered but I got the axel early which was nice - just waiting now for the rest but I imagine all will be well when they arrive - the only reason for the 4 stars is the separated delivery of the axel and hub.

by:

I installed the Dexter axle on my trailer yesterday, and I was very impressed with the quality and the ease of installation. The install took much less time than expected, and this was helped by the hubs having the bearing pre-installed, what a bonus! This is a great solution to replace a fried axle, I highly recommend it.

  • Correct Replacement for 2,000 lb Dexter Axle with 48" Spring Center Length
To replace your Dexter axle, you just need to match your existing axle's weight capacity and spring center length. If you are keeping your existing wheels but replacing the hubs, you will need to match your wheel's bolt pattern as well. If your wheels have a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # 20440I-ST-60. Otherwise, if you are just replacing the axle, you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with Standard Spindles # T20BTR-6048 which work for 10"...

  • Availability of Replacement Hub with LM12749 Inner and JL26749 Outer Bearing
I checked our inventory and it looks like we do not offer a hub with an outer bearing that will match the outer bearing dimension on your trailer spindle. That probably means you'll have a really hard time finding replacement parts, since we do carry a large selection for the most popular set-ups on the road today. The only solution I could offer would be to replace your axle altogether with one whose spindles are more common and for which parts are readily available today. If you're interested...

  • Can a Trailer Install an Axle that Measures 4 inches Longer Overall
If the 48 inch spring center dimension of the Axle part # 20440I-ST-60 matches what your old axle has this axle will fit your trailer. Since the hub face dimension is 4 inches total longer you would end up with your wheels/tire sticking out 2 inches further on your trailer. If that wouldn't interfere with anything like fenders then the axle would work just fine.

Yes! You can weld the springs seats to a different location on Dexter trailer axle # 20440I-ST-60.
