Choosing the Correct Axle for my 7 x 16 Cargo Trailer.

Question:

Hi, I just bought a tandem axle 2011 united 7x16 cargo trailer, I am looking to replace the axles with the ez lube axles. How do I figure out what axles to order? They are spring axles, would it be wise to replace with torsion axles?

To find the correct replacement axle it is very straight forward. You want to know the Axle weight rating. This is going to be on the sticker found on the cross tube of the axle if this is not present measure the axle tube diameter and that can help us identify it. Then you want two measurements. The first is the hub face to hub face. So the measurement between where the the rims touch the axle hubs. The second is the distance center to center on the spring seats. Or where the springs meet the axle.

On the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles part # T20BTR-EZ-6048 it has a 2,200 lb. capacity and has a hub-face-to-hub-face length of 60" and a spring-center-to-spring-center length of 48". If that matches your axle you will be in good shape. But instead get the axle with the hubs so you know they will match.

For a 5 lug wheel use the Dexter Idler Trailer Axle w/ Hubs - EZ-Lube - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern part # 20545I-EZ-60-10 and for a 4 lug wheel part # 20440I-EZ-60 (2,000 lb capacity) is the answer.

Should your current axle have a different weight rating or different spacing let me know and I will be happy to recommend the correct axle for you. Torsion axles are available usually custom ordered. You can swap out to these but generally on a utility trailer there isn't much of a benefit.
