The unique free-backing design, patented by DICO, lets your trailer move in reverse without actuating the brakes. When you begin backing up, the brake shoes are firm against the drum, as in a braking situation. As you continue in reverse, however, the shoes turn with the drum until the lining pressure is released and you are able to back up freely.

These brakes are designed to eliminate friction between the shoes and drum when you are driving in reverse. A trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle when backing up.

Ordered both left and right assemblies. These look great and bolted right up. Adjusted easily. Only trouble with these is my brake line fitting would not thread into the wheel cylinder. I had to re-tap the holes on both sides. I first thought it was just some oversight on the first assembly, but when I had to do it on both of them, then that made me start to wonder. If you order these, don't be suprised if you also need a 1/8-27 NPT to run in the wheel cylinder ports. I'm sure I will like these much better than the original rusted steel assemblies that these replaced. Time will tell.

by:

I finished installing brake assemblies on all 6 wheels of my triple axle trailer today. Installation went fine. The only hitch was that the connection for the fresh water flushing system didn't work on the left side of the trailer. I had to drill new holes for the fitting because there was interference from the trailer frame with the predrilled holes.

I believe my previous brake assembly was standard steel, and it corroded quite badly after 5 years of use in saltwater, even with religious flushing. I am very hopeful that the galphorite coating will result in a longer lasting brake system, but of course I won't know that until a few years of use have passed.

I am extremely happy with the service from e-trailer, including answering my initial questions, the price of their product, and the quick shipping and communications regarding the order.

by:

The brakes fit perfectly and have performed flawlessly. The replacement was just routine maintenance to replace worn brakes. They shipped fast, well packed and ready to bolt on.

Buying them fully assembled was far easier than trying to replace the shoes themselves. Besides, if you exposed your trailer to any kind of salt water - you'll definitely want to change ALL parts. The cost is negligible and well worth knowing they will perform when yo need them to. Why chance replacing just a few parts? Yea, you might save some money, but not much.

Fantastic service and parts! I doubt I'll shop elsewhere!

Thank you!

I replaced the right and left brake assemblies and repacked the wheel bearings on my 1979 EZ Loader trailer on a Saturday afternoon. The entire job was very easy to do. I did have to do some minor re-tapping of the original hydraulic fittings primarily to get it to thread into the assembly fitting with ease, but even that was a snap (my neighbor just happened to have a tap and die set). I pull about 4000 lb of Searay and trailer combined (I weighed them on a public scale), and it was past time to replace the assemblies and actuator which had major corrosion after all those years of good service. If nothing else, I have peace of mind that all is well behind me.

by:

Bolt on in place of the old ones in less time than it takes to try to clean up and repair the rusty old ones. Great price too. The Galphotire coating looks like it will outlast the trailer. Definitely made my job easier. I used these to repair the brakes on an M-1102 military trailer. These don't have the parking brake option like the original brakes, but then I never used the Parking brake. E-trailer also has the assemblies with the parking brake.

by:

This product is better than buying just wheel cylinders and brake shoes. The price made me skeptical of the quality, but these appear to be the real deal. They come fully assembled down to the contact points being already lubed. The shipping was unbelievably fast and everything was packed carefully and suitably to protect the products from damage in shipping. It is very evident that the employees at etrailer.com care about their products and customers.

by:

  • Comparing Demco and Titan 12 x 2 Inch Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes
The difference in price, besides being from two different manufacturers, is the materials. Demco assembly # 42028 is galvanized steel. Titan assembly # T4489600 is Galphorite plated steel. So you could say that a galvanized material is superior to a plated one though the Galphorite is certainly a fantastic product. It also has a better warranty. The matching Titan right hand side assembly is # T4489500. Other than that there isn't a reason why you couldn't use either one provided they...

  • Replacement Hydraulic Brake Assemblies and Drums with 008-201-09 Casting Number for Boat Trailer
The 008-201-09 number you provided comes back on a Dexter Axle hub that we offer as part # 8-201-9UC3-EZ, a 12 x 2 inch brake drum. This hub uses a 25580 inner and 15123 outer bearing, so please check the reference numbers on your existing bearings to confirm that this hub is compatible. These hubs use a grease seal with a 2-1/8 inch inner diameter. Since it's kind of difficult to measure the inner diameter of a used grease seal, measure the OD of the spindle where the grease seal rides....

  • Can 6,000 Pound Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assemblies be Used on a 5,200 Pound Axle
The more pricey Demco Hydraulic Brake Assemblies, like # 42028, are designed for marine applications meaning it uses corrosion resistant materials to minimization or eliminate corrosion. The materials are more expensive which makes the assemblies cost more. For non-marine trailer applications, the Titan Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly, # T4489600, and # T4489500, would work just fine. These assemblies are rated for use on up to 6,000 pound axles, so you could use them on...

  • single and Tandem Axle Brake Line Kit for a Dexter Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly
For the Dexter Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly # T4489600 you can use the Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # 18SI-BLKIT for a single axle brake line kit or # 18TA-BLKIT for a tandem axle kit.

  • Comparing Uni-Servo and Free Backing Hydraulic Drum Trailer Brakes
If you replace the current brakes on your trailer with the same uni-servo drum brakes and no lockout actuator (like # T2351000), the brakes will deliver 20 percent braking when traveling in reverse. However, the more pressure you apply going backwards against the coupler, the more the brakes will engage so backing up the driveway will prove difficult. The Titan Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly, # T4489600, will allow you to brake in reverse using a coupler with no lockout...

  • Free-Backing 12 x 2 Drum Brake Drags When Moving Forward on Karavan Boat Trailer
Thank you for providing the photo of the left-hand brake assembly on your boat trailer. The bolt that attaches your actual brake shoe to the shoe lever arm should be tight, but we do not have an actual torque specification. It is intended that the bolt provide a pivot point for movement between those two parts. After examining your photo and comparing it to all of the free-backing 12 x 2 brake assemblies we offer I noticed that one of the springs on your brake appears to be in an incorrect...

  • 12 inch Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly that Activates in Forward and Reverse
Yes we do carry brake assemblies that do allow for braking in reverse and forward. The assembly you referenced is a free-backing assembly. Typically people with surge brake setups prefer this style since it allows the trailer to reverse without the brakes locking up. But for a 12 inch assembly that will activate in forward and reverse we have the part # AKUBRK-7R for the right side and # AKUBRK-7L for the left side.

  • Recommended Replacement Trailer Brakes, Brake Drums and Hydraulic Coupler for Boat Trailer
The Timbren Axle-Less suspension system you mentioned is compatible with the brake hub/drum # 8-201-51UC3-EZ and the # T4489500 right hand and # T4489600 left hand free backing brake assemblies. The brake drums are galvanized and the brake assemblies have a Galphorite plating for corrosion protection. The brake drum has a 6 on 5-1/2 inch wheel bolt pattern. It sounds like you're interested in a hydraulic or surge coupler. I'd recommend the Dexter Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator, part # 099-175-00...

  • Titan Brake assembly 12 x 2 Free Backing for Boat Trailer
Painted drum brake assemblies are not usually recommended for use in marine applications. The Titan Galphorite Free-Backing Hydraulic Trailer Brake Assembly - 12 inch, item # T4489500, right hand and, item # T4489600, left hand are the brakes I would recommend for your boat trailer. These assemblies are complete and ready to bolt on to your trailer brake mounting flange and are galphorite plated to resist the corrosion caused from backing the trailer into the water to launch the boat.
