Video Transcript for Demco Trailer Brakes 23510 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco Galvanized 12 Inch Marine Brake Assembly, part number 23510. This is a 12x2 galvanized hydraulic brake assembly. It's referred to as a 12x2 due to its dimensions. From here to here is 12 inches. The width of the brake shoe is two inches. It features galvanized backing plates, stainless steel spring hardware along with plated wheel cylinders and riveted marine brake shoes. It also works great on non-marine applications as well.

Weight capacity for this item is 6,000 pounds per pair or 3,000 pounds per each assembly. This is the right hand or passenger side assembly. It says "right" right here but you can also tell when the short shoe, this being the short one, the short shoe always faces forward. This would be aimed at the front of the trailer on the passenger side.It is a single servo assembly. You can tell right here with the plunger, it's a single plunger.

It comes from the wheel cylinder. This uses 12 inch hubs or drums for wheel size of 14-1/2 inches to 16 inches. The mounting bolts are sold separately and it does require periodic manual adjusting. The way that's done is right back here you can see the rubber plugs that fit over the adjustment holes, whenever its time to adjust you'll just pop those off and make your changes right through there. That should just about do it for the Demco Galvanized 12 Inch Marine Brake Assembly, part number 23510.

The Drum Brake Assembly was extremely great. The backing plate and the cylinder are plated so they will not rust or corrode. The springs are stainless steel so they will not corrode. They fit on my axle very good. I had no problem with them. They work just like when the trailer was new.

by:

One Year Follow-Up - This was an extremely simple and cost effective option to repair my trailer brakes. One side had been contaminated by a leaky grease seal, but I replaced the brake assemblies, seals, bearings, and races on both sides of my single axle fresh water boat trailer at the same time. I estimate about 3000 miles on this trailer since installed and everything is still working great.

I had no idea that I could purchase an entire brake assembly - ready to bolt on! The local trailer dealers wanted $98 per wheel, just for the shoe lining alone. I saved over 60% and got all new parts. Put them on today, bled the brake lines, and went to pick up a skidsteer loader. Everything works perfectly. I will not buy trailer parts anywhere else from now on.

Replaced 23 year old brake assembly with this and it was a perfect fit. All of the components were installed on the assembly as described - just bolt on, attach brake line, bleed and go.

by:

worked perfect on my 6000lb loadrite trailer. I added extra grease to the wheel cylinder bolts and adjuster threads. I'll be dunking it in saltwater.

  • Recommended Replacement Axles For Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
As long as the frame itself can handle the additional weight, you would need to upgrade all of the other components under that weight capacity including the coupler. I recommend using the Timbren Axle-Less Suspension - Spindle Only - Regular Tires - 5200 lbs # ASR5200S01. This will allow your to simply remove the existing suspension and axles and add a cross beam or add a piece of 2x3 inch tubing between the axles in the integrated holes. With these spindles, you can use the Trailer...

  • Correct Hydraulic Brake Assembly for Dexter 8-201 Hub/Drum
The Dexter 8-201 is a common 12 x 2 inch hub/drum used on 5,200 or 6,000 lb capacity axles. The 23-324 left hand hydraulic brake assembly you mentioned would certainly be compatible. You would also need the right hand assembly, part # 23-325. For a marine application, I would recommend the Demco 12x2 Marine Hydraulic Brake Assembly, part # 23510 for the right side, and # 23511 for the left. These brake assemblies feature galvanized backing plates and stainless steel spring hardware.

  • Brakes for Home Built Trailer With 7K Axle and 12 x 2 Drum
For a 7K axle with 12 X 2 inch drum, we have the # AKFBBRK-7L (left) and # AKFBBRK-7R (right) that you refer to. These are free-backing hydraulic drum brake assemblies designed for use with a surge-type trailer brake actuator.

  • Which Way Should Single Servo Hydraulic Trailer Brake Cylinders Push
I suppose it depends on the brake assembly but if you take a look at Demco brake assembly # 23510 the smaller shoe is forward and the wheel cylinder pushes on that smaller shoe. It is the same way for all of the 12 x 2 inch, single servo, brake assemblies we have. It sounds like the wheel cylinder is facing the wrong way on your trailer.

  • How To Check if Trailer Surge Brakes Are Working Properly On Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
Checking the brakes can be done in two ways. The easiest way is to raise one side of the trailer and spin the wheels while someone applies the surge brakes at the coupler. The better way would be to remove each of the wheels and brake drums and activate the brakes while making sure the wheel cylinders and brake assemblies are functioning properly. After this the first thing I would do is bleed the brakes using the trailers surge coupler to force the fluid from the brake lines and make...
