This trailer brake assembly acts as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for this brake to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKUBRK-7L Review

Today we're going to take a look at the 12 inch Uniserval hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound axles. This is the left hand driver side assembly. This hydraulic drum brake is designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. This one is the uniserval which is the single plunger design. This design delivers about 20% braking when it's put in reverse. The size on this is a 12 inch by 2 inch driver side electric trailer brake assembly. When they say 12 inch by 2 inch what their measuring is the 12 would be the diameter from edge of shoe to edge of shoe.

If I put a ruler on this from edge to edge you can see right at 12 inches. Then the 2 inches would be the width of the pad itself where the lining is so there's the 2 inches. So 12 inch by 2. This is a left hand driver side and if you need to know the, what side this goes on, all new ones will come with a sticker that says right hand or left hand. By chance if you had an assembly that didn't have a sticker on it the best way to tell is look at the size of the pad on the shoe.

If you look at this one right here you can see that the pad goes from here to here and if you look over here you can see that it goes from way here to way here. This is the smaller or primary shoe and the primary shoe always face the front of the trailer. If you put it this way that's the smaller shoe facing the front, that would mean this is the left hand driver side assembly. That's the best way to tell. These brake shoes are lined with an automotive grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded, it's not riveted to the shoe so it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque.

They also do tapered edges on these and they also do a circular grinding to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lockup. This is a manual adjust break so it does require periodic manual adjustments. The nice thing on this right here where you adjust it, it uses a fine tooth brake adjustment gear and that allows for a more precise setting. There is no break-in period needed in following your initial adjustment. The other nice thing on this assembly if you'll notice, has an adjuster plug right here. You pop that out and that's where you get your adjustment tool through to do your adjustments on your brakes.

This one will come with the adjuster plug. There's a lot of brake assemblies will just leave that hole open but then you have to end up getting a plug to put in there because you really don't want that open because it could allow dirt to get in there and cause problems in there with your brakes. You always want to have a plug in there to keep any dirt from getting in. This one will come with the plug. If you notice it's design to fit five hole brake mounting flange, see the five holes there. The mounting bolts, the nuts and the lock washers that are used to install this on to the brake mounting flange, they are sold separately. We do sell them on our website and they listed on this product page as a related product. This brake assembly is certified by USSAE and CSA which is the Canadian standards. Again the 12 inches by 2 inches is the size. This is designed to fit axles that are rated 5,200 to 7,000 pound axles and it is designed to use 12 inch brake drums on this. That should do it for the review of the 12 inch Uniserval hydraulic trailer brake assembly for 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound axles and this is the left hand driver side assembly.

Good product and description was very informative.
I ordered the part with regular ground shipping and it was to take almost a week to get it. However I received an e mail and they said they were going to expedite my order at no additional charge. I received it in just a couple of days. Little did they know I was waiting on this part to fix my boat trailer just ahead of an up coming poker run. Thank you for the great part and more over thank you for Excellent service.

  • Brake Assembly Recommendation for Dexter Axles Rated for 5,000 lbs
Dexter SLR does not indicate the weight capacity of the axle, but if you have 5.2k rated Dexter axles the assembly part # AKUBRK-7L would be the correct left hand brake assembly. Or if you need both sides you'd want the part # AKUBRK-7 which includes a left hand and a right hand side. These fit the standard Dexter style brake mounting flanges found on 5.2 to 7k rated axles that have a 5 bolt mounting pattern.

  • Which Hydraulic Brakes Fit the Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension
The Timbren Heavy-Duty Axle-Less Trailer Suspension # ASR35HDS02 can be used with hydraulic brakes but they will not work with the Dexter # 23-312-313. The Timbren system is designed to be used with the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-201-9UC3-EZ and has a 5 bolt brake flange configuration. For hydraulic brakes that will fit, I recommend the Hydraulic Trailer Brake - Uni-Servo - 12" # AKUBRK-7R and # AKUBRK-7L. These hydraulic drum brakes are 12" x 2" and also have the same 5...

  • How To Determine Replacement Hubs And Brakes For Boat Trailer
Unfortunately, just the outer bearing is not quite enough to figure out what you need for replacement hubs and bearings. For a trailer with that much weight it sounds like you have a tandem trailer. I recommend replacing the bearings and seals on all of the wheels at the same time, even if you are only replacing the brakes on one axle. If you remove the inner and outer bearing and can find the numbers, that will really help. Or you can use digital calipers like part # PTW80157 and take...

  • 12 inch Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly that Activates in Forward and Reverse
Yes we do carry brake assemblies that do allow for braking in reverse and forward. The assembly you referenced is a free-backing assembly. Typically people with surge brake setups prefer this style since it allows the trailer to reverse without the brakes locking up. But for a 12 inch assembly that will activate in forward and reverse we have the part # AKUBRK-7R for the right side and # AKUBRK-7L for the left side.

  • Replacement Brake Assembly Recommendation to Replace Dexter 23-342 and 23-343
We have similar assemblies to the Dexter part# 23-342 and the # 23-343 that your trailer has. For our house etrailer.com brand we have the part # AKFBBRK-7R-D and # AKFBBRK-7L-D which is a 12x2 7k rated brake assembly that would work well for you. These are also dacromet coated which means they will resist corrosion.
